Once our
fall semester starts on August 21, we will have even higher demand for tutoring sessions on Sundays from 1
p.m. to 8 p.m. as well as from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
根据题干中的 ……more than 30 hours per week,可定位于文章中 What we offer 这一段
Have a good command of
the subjects they tutor. A 答案错在 all 一词上面;C
Job

At the age of eight, Glenn Cunningham was severely injured in a fire. He had major burns over the
lower half of his body and was taken to a nearby county hospital.
From his bed, the semiconscious (半昏迷的) little boy heard the doctor talking to his mother. The
doctor told his mother that he would surely die—which was for the best, really—for the terrible fire had
destroyed the lower half of his body.
But somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. The mother was told that her son
was bound to spend his lifetime in a wheelchair.
But this brave little boy was determined that he would walk and even run. But unfortunately, from the
waist down, Glenn had no motor ability. His thin, scarred legs just hung there, all but lifeless. Yet his
courage that he would walk was as strong as ever.
One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of
sitting there, he threw himself from the chair. Glenn worked his way to the fence, dragging
his legs behind him. Then, step by step, he began dragging himself along the fence, determined that he
would walk. He started to do this every day until eventually he did develop the ability first to stand up,
then to walk with help, then to walk by himself—and then amazingly—to run. Glenn began to run to
school. He ran everywhere as fast as he could. Later in college, Glenn joined the track team where he
received the nickname(绰号) “the Kansas Flyer”.
1938 witnessed this young man's another amazing achievement. This young man, who was not
expected to survive, who would surely never walk, and who could never hope to run, ran a mile in 4
minutes and 4.4 seconds, the world's fastest indoor mile! His perseverance paid off.
5.What did the doctor think of Glenn's injury?
A.It would take a long time for him to fully recover.
B.It would cost lots of money to cure him.
C.He would be semiconscious.
D.He had little chance of surviving.
6.Why did Glenn receive the nickname “the Kansas Flyer”?
A.Because he looked like “the Kansas Flyer”.
B.Because he once acted as “the Kansas Flyer”.
C.Because he could run very fast.
D.Because he joined the track team.
7.What achievement did Glenn make in 1938?
A.He survived.
B.He developed the ability to walk.
C.He began to run to school.
D.He set a world record.
8.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The power of determination
B.The dream for championship
C.The key to high performance
D.The mistake of a doctor

Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of
earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-
Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job
away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local
technical college, working to pay her tuition (学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a
college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to
advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves:nursing.
She chose the UWEau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was
able to pursue her fouryear degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to
help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her
husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68yearold mother helped take care of the children at
times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer
sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to
study. “Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or
papers,” she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn
her degree. Jennifer is a firstgeneration graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that's pretty
powerful.

We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in
anything. To achieve your goal you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently(坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to
persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have. Time works against those who live
instantly. Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn't happen instantly people move on to
the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time. It allows them to step back, observe and assess the
progress of the goal they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop; some just need to be left there
for a while to find their own way.
When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times you do not know how you got there
or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently you learn how things work, how
to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have
more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and
do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take
time to develop your abilities to reach your goals. Do not get discouraged just because your success is not
instant.
Celebrate each step along the way. People who live instantly don't take time to appreciate what they
have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.
You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goal. Persistence will get you there if you
really want to get there.
12.Why will people who want things instantly fail in many things?

B.They don't stick to their goal.
C.They often change their lifestyle.

13.What's the main advantage persistent people have over instant people?
A.The willpower. B.A target.
C.A plan. D.An opportunity.
14.According to the text, persistent people ________.
A.focus more on the result
B.work slower than instant people
C.will get rewarded for their efforts
D.don't appreciate what they have done
15.What's the writer's main purpose of writing the text?
A.To blame those who live instantly.
B.To persuade people to live happily.
C.To praise those who have succeeded.
D.To suggest learning the art of persistence.

Society tells us that you can't teach an old dog new trick. But it doesn't have to be that way. A new
study published in Human Development points out that using a childlike approach to learning can help
people of any age take on and rise to new challenges. __36__
Venture(冒险)outside your comfort zone. As adults, we tend to use similar skills day in and day out:
we take jobs in fields we're already good at, drive the same routes to the same places, and fall into routines
we're comfortable with.__37__Switching to something more challenging may have more cognitive
benefits.
__38__ A fear of making mistakes is another reason why adults are slow to learn new things; if we try
but fail, we can face criticism, lose money, or get fired. That's why it's important to build up a support
network of people at work and at home—who allow you to make mistakes and learn from them.
Make a serious commitment and don't give up. __39__ If you can afford it, spending money on a new
pursuit—for example, booking a trip to Rome to practice your Italian—might also make it harder to throw
in the towel.
Learn more than one thing at once. We tend to zero in on one hobby or one skill. But dividing that
time and energy into three or four areas will stretch your brain in all different directions. __40__ Add
singing lessons, and next year you try something else. You can add things gradually based on what you can
handle.
A.Turn to your friends and family.
B.The following strategies will do the trick.
C.Surround yourself with encouraging people.
D.Telling friends about your new goal can help keep you motivated.
E.But all this familiarity limits the parts of the brain we're using regularly.

in addition to“除了……中”的to是介词, 故其后应用donate的
动名词形式作宾语, 故填donating。
65. 【解析】has added。

Dear Jenny,
How are you doing? It’s been almost two months since you returned to America. I miss you a lot.
Thank you so much for what you have done to help me with my English. Now I have met with two
new obstacles. The first one is that I find it difficult to learn new words by heart, and the second one is that
I often feel nervous when speaking English. I really hope that you can give me some useful advice on how
to memorize new words and practice speaking.

Adventures Through the Gorge
We put the raft in the calm, cold water.I looked down. The water was like a mirror. It was a foggy
morning,so I could barely make out what was down the river. When we took our places in the raft,I was in
the back with my dad right across from me.Our tour guide was telling us the basics of rafting, and it seemed
she was patronizing us!I was terrified.Since I was in the back,I was sure I would be the one to fall out.But I
have always been an optimist,so I thought it would turn out okay.
Then I looked up and saw a big, gray cloud.I looked down at the river, and it started to get louder and
closer to us;soon raindrops pelted us.Once we moved out of the rain, the clouds faded away, and the sun was
shining down on us for the rest of the day.As I looked around,I saw the monstrous, green trees standing over
me.It was beautiful.
As we moved farther down the river,I heard the water flowing gracefully. When we moved deeper into
the gorge,it got louder and louder. This was our first rapids. It seemed that we were approaching the rapids
slowly, but we were at the top of the rapids in the blink of an eye.It felt like time frozen.I was so excited and
nervous;I thought I was going to die.It was a bumpy ride down.Getting splashed with water,we raced up
and down the rocks. There was not a patch of dry skin on us by the time we hit the bottom.
After we got through the rapids,I was so excited!Going down made me feel I could do anything. Our
tour guide told us we were going to approach Category V rapids. It was more intense than the Category I

Paragraph1:
About three minutes later, the Category V was coming.
The raft raced down the rapids.Water was splashing on the rocks, letting out louder noise.Screaming all
the way down,I saw white water all over.I was so nervous because there were five big solitary rocks
sticking out.If a little careless,we might hit one and get turned upside down.In the blink of an eye,we turned
around the last huge rock, entering a small calm ride. When we settled at the bottom,I wanted to go back up
and do it all again.
Paragraph2:
After racing down all of the rapids, I was no longer scared.
“What did you think about that Category V rapids?” my dad asked.“I was super nervous at first. But
when we hit the bottom,I wanted to do it once more.”“Would you say you become more confident of
yourself?” he continued.“Yes,I would say I become much more confident of myself.” I smiled. We walked
towards our campsite.
