When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come first—changing your
diet or becoming more physically active?
Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition
and physical activity at once tends to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of advising
people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals.
So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were 45 or older into four groups. One
group was instructed in making diet and exercise changes at the same time; the second group was
taught about diet changes followed by exercise changes four months later; the third group changed their
exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later; and the final control group
was not instructed in either diet or exercise changes but in how to manage their stress.
The researchers tracked the groups for a full year. Compared to the control group, the three
intervention groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their exercise habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they
received daily compared to the other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year,
the group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the
national goals for both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their
nutrition first were unable to meet the levels of fitness after a year. The researchers think that
changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity.
The findings show however that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome.

You're watching your favorite TV show when a commercial (广告) break starts. First you see an ad for
candy. Then there's one for fast food. In response, your stomach growls (咕咕直叫). Suddenly, all you can
think about is how much you need a snack. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Researchers from
McMaster University in Canada studied the effects of junk food ads. The researchers examined the effects
of advertising junk food on more than 6,000 kids through TV commercials and other types of media. They
found that kids made unhealthy food and drink choices as quickly as 30 minutes after seeing the ads.
"There is too much unhealthy food advertising out there, which appears repeatedly," says Behnam
Sadeghirad. He's one of the researchers who led the study. "This is dangerous for younger children because
they lack self-discipline and don't know the advertised foods are healthy or not."
Food and drink ads are everywhere, from TV to the Internet. Companies want to make sure you know
about their products. They spend nearly $1.8 billion a year on food ads aimed at kids, according to a report.
