Musicis often called humanity’s universal language.A12-year-oldHouston boy,YuviAgarwal,
is testing this idea with an unexpected audience: shelter animals. After noticing his keyboard
playing made his restless golden dog, Bozo, calm down, Yuvi wondered if music could help
stressed homeless animals too. With support from his parents, he founded the nonprofit Wild Tunes
in 2023 to sign up musicians to perform in animal shelters. So far, he has gathered about 100
volunteers ofall ages and skilllevels toplay at nineshelters incities including Houston and Denver.
“You don’t need to understand words to enjoy music; just the melody (旋律), harmony and
rhythm. It breaks through language barriers and even species,” Yuvi explained after playing at
DenverAnimal Shelter. He observed that animals like Pituca, an elderly dog, often become excited
when he enters but calm down within minutes of his playing. Some even fall asleep. He recalled
Penelope, a rescue dog in Houston who refused to leave her cage to eat. “After I played, she came
out, kissed myface and touched myears,”Yuvi shared.
While music’s effect on humans is well-studied, its impact on animals remains unclear. Some
studies suggest classical music calms dogs in stressful environments like shelters. However,
researchers like Dr. Lori Kogan of Colorado State University warn that evidence is limited. “We
want simple answers, like ‘music calms animals’, but it’s more nuanced ,” said Kogan, noting
variables like setting, volume, music type and individual animal history. She advises a case-by-case
approach: “If your pet seems calmer withmusic, that’spositiveenrichment.”
Despite the scientific debate, Yuvi’s firsthand experiences convince him music comforts
stressed animals. He plans to expandWildTunes nationally. “The volunteers also benefit,” he notes,
“They practice instruments or sing for a nonjudgmental audience, boosting confidence.” This
initiativeproves that music’s calming power may indeed cross species lines.
14.What dovolunteers ofWildTunes do?
A. Help find homes forthe homeless.
B. Studythe effect of musiconhumans.
C. Perform musicfor shelter animals.
D.Teach shelter animalsto enjoy melodies.
15.What does theunderlined word “nuanced”in paragraph 3probably mean?
A. limited. B. positive. C. complex. D. calming.

Headlines often warn that AI steals jobs and harms workers. However, a unique 20-year study
tracking nearly 18,500 German workers found the opposite. Workers regularly using AI reported
better physical health and greater well-being, with unchanged job satisfaction and no increased
{#{QQABSYaUggAgApAAAAhCEwXgCkGYkAAAAKgGwBAUoAAAARFABAA=}#}anxiety about theirfutures.
Researchers compared workers in AI-heavy roles with those in traditional jobs from 2000 to
2020.As Germany’sAI adoption grew rapidly after 2010, the study objectively identified jobs most
exposed to AI and tracked workers’ self-reported experiences over time. Crucially, researchers
controlled forfactors likeage, education andindustry.
The results were consistently positive or neutral (中性的). Workers alongside AI experienced
better overall health. Researchers believe AI reduces physically demanding, repetitive and
dangerous tasks — work that damages the body over time. For instance, AI machinery handles
heavy lifting in warehouses, while humans monitor operations. Similarly, AI simplifies paperwork
for nurses, freeing timefor patient care.
Critically, the study found no increase in depression, job insecurity fears, or unemployment
rates. Workers even saw a small reduction in working hours without wage loss, suggesting AI may
create more people-friendly conditions rather than reduce jobs. Germany’s strong labor protections,
extensive unions and gradual AI adoption likely created an environment where technology aided
workers effectively.
However, a note of warning emerged. Workers in economically weaker eastern Germany
reported increased anxiety related to AI, highlighting how regional stability and institutional
protections influence outcomes. The study also has limitations: it focused on pre-2010 workforce
entrants and early-stageAI tools. The impact of newer technologies like ChatGPTor situations with
weaker worker protections remains unknown.
This long-term research challenges the “robots stealing jobs” idea. Instead, it suggests that with
thoughtful application and proper protections,AI can reshape work — reducing physical stress and
dangers while maintaining employment and potentially improving worker well-being. The
challenge is extendingthis potential benefit beyond Germany.
17.What can welearn about theworkers in thestudy?
A.They worked in easternAsia.
B.They were tracked for ten years.
C.They all reported betterhealth.
D. Someofthem made regular use ofAI.
18.What impact does the studyindicateAI has onworkers’jobs?
A. It increases stress levels.
B. It reduces tiring tasks.
C. It makes work more dangerous.
D. It leads to moreunemployment.
19.What made workers ineastern Germany feel moreanxiousaboutAI?
.
A LimitedAI training opportunities.
B. Emotionalinstability.
C.Weak protections from institutions.
D.Working inhigh-risk industries.
20.What is theauthor’s purposein writing thetext?
A.ToproveAI willreplace mosthuman jobs.

Tips toCreate Great Readers
Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously, children don’t enter the world knowing
how to understand a text or make a prediction. 21 Here are some tips for making children
great readers byhabit.
22 The most critical moment in reading instruction is when children get something
wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits.
Intervene (干预) with a targeted question, such as “How does this part of the text help you
understand thischaracter?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and buildgreat ones
in theirplace.
Build habits at the moment of writing. Just like adults, children use writing to gather their
thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others. 23 For example, children can first
have adiscussion about what they’re reading byanswering a focus questionin writing:“What is the
author trying to teach us in this story? 24 By doing this, you can get a better understanding of
what guidancethe children will need during thediscussion.
Build habits at the moment of reading. Independent reading time is important for any reading
programme. It’s a chance for children to put together everything they’ve learnt in reading lessons
and fly using their own wings. 25 So providing a rich class library and letting children know
that they are expected to read for the entire period will ensure their success as lifelong independent
readers.
A. Build habits at themoment oferror.
B. Make surechildren fall in lovewith reading.
C.Then, you can review their written responses.
D.They grow intogreat readers bylearning great habits.
E.But itonly works ifthey really dospend that timereading.
F.Specificlines or phrases from thetexthelpto reveal that information.
G.Therefore, you can develop theirwriting and reading skills at thesame time.
