You might know what to do if a human needs first aid, but what if your dog gets a bite or your cat eats something
poisonous? Dr. Liam Donaldson, clinical director at Greencross Vet(兽医) Hospital at the University of Melbourne, says
it’s important that pet owners understand basic first aid. Here, he shares his tips for dealing with common accidents and
injuries.
Cuts & wounds
You don’t need to worry about disinfecting the injury site, but you do need to stop the bleeding, says Dr. Donaldson.
“If there’s uncontrollable bleeding, apply pressure — even if it’s just using a T-shirt. Once you have applied pressure to
reduce bleeding, take your pet immediately to a vet for assessment.” he advises.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司Snake bites
Snakes have very small teeth, so their bite marks can be difficult to spot — and you might not see the bite happen.
But if your pet shows signs of snake bite poisoning — sudden weakness and collapse, dilated pupils, vomiting, paralysis
and shaking or twitching of muscles — get them to a vet without delay.
Tick bites
It’s a good idea to have a pair of tick-removal tweezers(镊子) on hand in case you need to remove a tick from your pet.
“There’s often a lot of concern about whether you have to get all of the tick or not, but as long as you get the body of the
tick off, generally the head will just remove itself over time,” says Dr. Donaldson. He recommends keeping the tick so that
if your pet becomes ill, your vet can identify whether they were bitten by a paralysis tick (the type that can be deadly).
Poisoning
Cats eating ivy and dogs eating sago palm or macadamia nuts are some of the most common poisonings Dr. Donaldson
sees. “If it’s a macadamia nut, I would just keep a very close eye on them. If they start to show any gastrointestinal signs —
if they go off their food, if they become sore in any of their legs — get them checked over by a vet,” he says. “If it was
lilies or sago palm, I would recommend getting them to a vet, even if they’re not showing signs of illness, just because that
can typically be life-threatening.”
21. If your pet dog gets seriously injured, what is the best solution?
A. To seek medical assistance. B. To disinfect the injury site.
C. To apply pressure to reduce bleeding. D. To use a T-shirt to stop bleeding.

A. Ivy. B. Sago palm. C. A macadamia nut. D. A common poisoning.

At 1,345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is definitely not the world’s most difficult mountain to climb. But things
get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch-high heels, especially if you’re a guy. One
English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway, a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an
application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8
a.m. on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the
whole thing for a two-minute video that served as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn’t the
smoothest experience.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司Halfway up Ben Navis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The
weather didn’t make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against
40-to-50-mile-per-hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900
meters up the mountain. Apart from providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the
19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes, like Sal’s Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around
the world.
“Raising money for charity brings happiness to people’s lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone
happiness, then that’s what it’s all about.” Ben said.

Back in 2019, three Chinese paleontologists were playfighting during a break from working in the Chongqing
Province, China. One was kung-fu kicked into a huge rock, causing piles of broken stones to tumble down and exposing an
opening in the rock face. Inside, a very impressive fossil lay undisturbed, preserved for millions of years.
The fossil was a jawed fish, some 439 million years old, and the findings from the Chongqing site, along with other
fossil findings in nearby Guizhou province, have excited the science world, as they are 11 million years older than any fish
fossil found before.
It is a significant discovery because paleontologists have suspected that jaws(下颚) evolved some 450 million years
ago in species living in water, but there had yet to be any fossils that supported this theory. The oldest fossils with jaws
found were 439 million years old. In this discovery, though, there was a new species of ancestral shark that was 439 million
years old, with a complete jaw. The “spiny shark” suggests that the jawed fish emerged many years earlier than previously
assumed.
“All these things are still like dreams,” said Zhu Min, who led the research teams that recently published four papers
on the discoveries, “Today we are staring at complete early Silurian fishes, 11 million years earlier than the previous oldest
finds. These are both the most exciting as well as the most challenging fossils I have had the privilege to work on.”
China has been the site of numerous discoveries in recent years, including fossils of feathered dinosaurs, as well as the

Zhu added, “Suddenly we realized we had found a fossil site of exceptional preservation. We are now close to the core of
understanding the fishy tree of early jawed vertebrates(颌类脊椎动物).”
28. How was the fossil discovered by the Chinese paleontologists?
A. When they were having fun. B. When they were practicing kung fu.
C. When they were fighting. D. When they were working.
29. What does the underlined word “undisturbed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Incomplete. B. Unchanged. C. Uninterrupted. D. Indifferent.
30. Why is this jawed fish fossil very important?
A. Because it has excited the scientific community. B. Because its jaws evolved 450 million years.
C. Because it has provided evidence for previous theory. D. Because it is a new species of a certain shark.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To report a breakthrough and significance in research.
B. To inform people of fossilized fishes recently found.
C. To show how the jaws of fish evolved millions of years ago.
D. To stress the significance of jaws for early animals.

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy pair. Hidden among already popular
toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s
emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center. PleIQ is a set of plastic
toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things, Edison Durán directs the company

a tablet camera, PleIQ has children act as a teacher or guide to a companion character.
On the other side of the convention center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called
Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them
started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism(自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and
follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone
else telling him to certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our
products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to
the Top. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all
this — getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be
happy?’”

In order to better survive in the world filled with challenges, we ourselves need to be wise. 36 Let me tell you
this. Wisdom provides us with perspectives and calms us down in terrible situations. Here are some effective strategies that
we can use to get wiser.
37 This will open up new pathways for us. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is
the most comfortable for you. Instead, train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble enough, you
will always get to experience something new.
Meanwhile, you’re supposed to be the kind of person who learns something new every day. Take new classes, read
books and the list goes on and on. 38 All of these activities will help you to tackle problems from different angles,
making everything easier.
What if you lack self-discipline or need timely guidance? Maybe the best way is to have wise people as your
mentors(导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them
wiser, and then engage in useful dialogue with them. 39
If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too? 40 In today’s world, it is
very easy to become wise but it isn’t easy to help others. So keep things balanced and never let go of your passions and
values. This will pave the path to success.
A. Why is wisdom crucial in this modern world?
B. Change your routine and see where life takes you.
