Joining a club is a great way to make friends, develop skills, and enrich your school life. Here are three popular
clubs at our school for you to explore:
Environmental Protection Club
The Environmental Protection Club focuses on raising students’ awareness of environmental issues and organizing
practical activities. Every month, we hold “Green Campus” campaigns, such as tree-planting on the school playground
and waste-sorting competitions in classrooms. Last semester, we worked with the local community to clean up the
nearby river, which was highly praised by the town government. Members also get the chance to attend environmental
lectures given by university professors. Whether you’re interested in protecting wildlife or reducing plastic waste,
this club is for you.
Drama Club
If you love acting, singing, or stage design, the Drama Club is the perfect choice. We put on two plays every
school year — one in the fall and one in the spring. Last year, our performance of The Little Prince attracted over
300 audience members, including students, teachers, and parents. Club members take turns in different roles: some
act as characters, some design costumes and sets, and others handle lighting and sound. Even if you have no prior
experience, our experienced teachers will provide training sessions every Wednesday afternoon.
Robotics Club
For students who are curious about technology and engineering, the Robotics Club offers an exciting platform.
We learn to build and program robots using simple kits. Every year, we take part in the provincial high school robotics
competition. Last year, our team won the third prize for designing a robot that could help with household chores like
sweeping the floor. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the science lab. You don’t need to be
good at math or science — just bring your enthusiasm!
.
1 What activity did the Environmental Protection Club do last semester?
A. Held a waste-sorting competition.
B. Cleaned up a nearby river.
C. Planted trees on the school playground.
D. Invited professors to give lectures.
2. How many plays does the Drama Club put on each school year?A. One.
B. Two.
C. Three.
D. Four.
3. What do we know about the Robotics Club?
A. It meets once a week.
B. It requires members to be good at math.
C. Its team won a prize last year.
D. It teaches members to build household robots only.

As a child, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in westernPennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid
like me.
Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls
surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose
and falling. However, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter
the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I want to climb the stone walls.” I said. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” The response was just as I’d
expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute.” I
heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed
those old walls —and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll
never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always
remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen
by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same:
my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you,” the
kids will hear me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”
4. Why did the writer enjoy his visits to the farm?
A. There were old stone houses. B. He was allowed to climb the walls.
C. He missed his grandfather a lot. D. He could experience new fun there.
5. What can be inferred about the writer from the passage?
A. He was backed up by his grandfather to follow his heart.
B. He didn’t expect his parents’ disagreement on wall climbing.
C. He became a TV program host with his grandfather’s help.
D. He didn’t know the possible danger of the stone walls.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s grandfather?
A. Open-minded. B. Adventurous. C. Kind-hearted. D. Dependable.
7. Which is probably the best title for the text?
A. Unforgettable Childhood B. Just Be Yourself
C. Do Whatever You Like D. Like grandfather, like grandson
D 5. A 6. A 7. B

Every third Friday of May, we pause to recognize the fragile (易损的) existence of endangered species. We
share the planet with countless animals, plants, and insects. Yet, many of them are disappearing right before our eyes.
National Endangered Species Day urges us to take action before it’s too late.
The day was established in 2006 by the U.S. Congress to raise awareness about species in danger of dying out.
But the issue goes back decades. Laws to protect endangered species have been around for over 40 years. Today, the urgency (紧急) remains the same. Species are still disappearing, and their habitats are under threat.
When the last of a species disappears, it’s gone forever. Endangered species are dangerously close to that fate
Their numbers are so low that every birth counts, every death matters. Some remain in the thousands, others in
the hundreds, and a few are down to mere tens.
When a species disappears, it doesn’t go quietly. The loss greatly affects ecosystems. When a species disappears,
its prey (被捕食者) populations explode. Plants die off, and animals lose their food source. The web of life is fragile,
and every species has a role. Take pollinators (昆虫授粉), for instance. Bees, butterflies, and bats help plants
reproduce. If they disappear, crops fail, and food chains fall apart.
National Endangered Species Day reminds us that time is running out for many species. But the fate of these
animals, plants, and insects isn’t set in stone. Organizations like the World Wildlife Federation and the Jane Goodall
Institute work tirelessly to protect endangered species. They fund anti-poaching efforts, save injured animals, and
restore habitats. Individuals can help too. Donate to wildlife organizations. Volunteer at local conservation centers.
Adopt sustainable habits such as using less plastic. Every choice, no matter how small, can make a difference.
Saving endangered species isn’t just about protecting animals. It’s about preserving ecosystems, supporting
biodiversity, and ensuring a balanced, healthy planet for future generations. And that future starts with us.
8. What do the underlined words “the issue” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The loss of wildlife habitat. B. The 2006 U.S. Congress decision.
C. The problem of species extinction. D. The lack of awareness of endangered species.
9. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning pollinators in paragraph 4?
A. The sharp drop in biodiversity. B. The great importance of ecosystems.
C. The urgent need to save endangered species. D. The chain reaction caused by species extinction.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The cost of wildlife protection. B. The measures against species extinction.
C. The reasons for protecting endangered species. D. The effectiveness of existing preservation efforts.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Ecosystems and biodiversity are closely related.
B. Future generations should take more responsibility.
C. Protecting endangered species is a time-consuming task.
D. Preservation efforts benefit both wildlife and human survival.
C 9. D 10. B 11. D
The day was established in 2006 by the U.S. Congress to raise awareness about
species in danger of dying out. But the issue goes back decades. Laws to protect endangered species have been
around for over 40 years. 但the
When a species disappears, it doesn’t go quietly. The loss greatly affects ecosystems.
When a species disappears, its prey (被捕食者) populations explode. Plants die off, and animals lose their food
source. The web of life is fragile, and every species has a role. Take pollinators (昆虫授粉), for instance. Bees,
butterflies, and bats help plants reproduce. If they disappear, crops fail, and food chains fall apart.
National Endangered Species Day reminds us that time is running out for many
species. But the fate of these animals, plants, and insects isn’t set in stone. Organizations like the World Wildlife
Federation and the Jane Goodall Institute work tirelessly to protect endangered species. They fund anti-poaching
efforts, save injured animals, and restore habitats. Individuals can help too. Donate to wildlife organizations.
Volunteer at local conservation centers. Adopt sustainable habits such as using less plastic. Every choice, no matter
how small, can make a difference.
Saving endangered species isn’t just about protecting animals. It’s about preserving
ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring a balanced, healthy planet for future generations. And that future
starts with us.
D
It can be fun to hear a catchy tune (曲调) in your head — until that tune begins to play over and over again!
Songs that get stuck in our brain are called earworms. An earworm can stay in your head after you listen to the tune
play out loud. But it can also occur if something makes you remember the song — like visiting the place where you
first heard it.
Scientists have studied earworms for years. They have found that some tunes are more likely to stay in your
head than others. For example, earworms are often faster, have an easy-to-remember melody (旋律), and have special
changes in pitch (音高).
By examining brain scans, scientists have learned what happens in your head when you have an earworm. When
you hear music—or even imagine hearing it—part of the brain called the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) becomes active.
This part processes sounds and sends messages to other parts of the brain connected to memory and feelings. Some
scientists think your brain can keep sending these signals for a short time, which causes the song to repeat in your
mind.
What would cause the human brain to repeat the same song in the first place? Scientists are still not sure. But
long ago, before writing was invented, we passed information through songs. So, we may have developed a habit of
keeping music in our heads to help remember important information.
Whatever the reason, when a tune gets stuck, it can be really annoying! Luckily, there may be ways to get rid of
an earworm. You can listen to another song or do a puzzle to stop yourself from concentrating on it. Or try chewing
gum, which affects how your brain remembers music. Even if you do nothing, a stuck song will eventually go away
on its own. Now, that must be music to your ears!
12. What is an “earworm” according to the text?
A. A real insect that lives in human ears.
B. A tool scientists use to study memory.
C. A type of brain disease affecting the auditory cortex.
D. A song that repeats uncontrollably in one’s mind.
13. What feature makes a tune more likely become an earworm?
A. It is slow and quiet. B. It is fast with catchy tunes.
C. It has no melody. D. It is very long.
14. According to the text, how can we free ourselves from an earworm?
A. By listening to the same song repeatedly.B. By keeping away from all kinds of music.
C. By doing activities that take our attention away.
D. By visiting the place where we first heard it.
15. What is your understanding of the last sentence?
A. It’s good news. B. It’s hard to believe.
C. It’s an alarming fact. D. It’s an annoying message.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中“It can be fun to hear a catchy tune (曲调) in your head — until that tune begins to
play over and over again! Songs that get stuck in our brain are called earworms.(在脑海中听到一首朗朗上口的曲
根据第二段中“For example, earworms are often faster, have an easy-to-remember melody ( 旋律
), and have special changes in pitch
You can listen to another song or do a puzzle to stop yourself from concentrating
on it. Or try chewing gum, which affects how your brain remembers music. Even if you do nothing, a stuck song
will eventually go away on its own.(你可以听另一首歌或做一个谜题来阻止自己集中注意力。
Even if you do nothing, a stuck song will eventually go away on its own. Now,
that must be music to your ears!(即使你什么都不做,一首被卡住的歌最终也会自己消失。
故选A。
Parents are the number one influence in their children’s lives. ____16____ In a Parents Empowered survey,
parents placed themselves last in the line-up of influences on their children — after friends, teachers and media.
____17____ Research shows that there are three things parents can do to protect children from risky behaviors:
bonding (联结), boundaries (边界), and monitoring.
The stronger the relationship between parents and their children, the more the child will not want to disappoint
the parent. Eating dinner together as a family has a significant impact on protecting children from risky behavior.
____18____ Listening to children without preaching (说教) strengthens the bond.
Boundaries are set when parents set clear family rules on behaviors such as no alcohol or other drugs. Only a
small percentage of teens will try these if parents make it very clear and talk about consequences (后果) for breaking
the family rule.
A much needed parental task, that tends to drop as the children become teens, is monitoring. A recent study
shows the best kind of parenting to protect youth is “warm and with follow through”. ____19____ When they are
going out, ask the questions: Where are you going? Who are you going with? What will you be doing? When will
you be home? Will there be alcohol or other drugs there?
____20____ So it is helpful for kids who have a hard time saying “no” to their friends to be able to use their
parents as the fall guys.
A. Check on their social media.
B. Parents don’t always believe this.
C. In other words, trust but check on your kids.
D. Have consequences when the rules are broken.
E. That’s because there is family togetherness and discussion.
F. There are plenty of dangerous activities kids can get into these days.
G. But when the youth answered the same question, they placed their parents first.
B 17. G 18. E 19. C 20. F

The night had deepened and all was quiet. But Jack was burning the midnight oil, busy with his revision work, determined to improve his grades. A wave of tiredness crept over him; he stretched his arms and drank another cup
of coffee. He felt refreshed and continued to work hard. He knew he couldn't let his recent failures define him.
That morning, as the test papers were handed back, Jack was shocked to find that he got the only D in his
class. Though he didn’t do well in his lessons, the unexpected grade hit him hard. Most of his classmates got their
desired grades, their laughter and chatter feeling like a painful reminder of his failure. He couldn't help but recall
that he always passed exams with C, and in his parents' eyes, he was a total failure. This painful reality weighed
heavily on him. Staring at the glaring D grade on his paper, Jack felt he should do something. He couldn’t continue
down this path. He needed to change.
From that day, he was more focused and eager to learn in class. He raised his hand more often, contributing
more, and his assignments showed his hard work and dedication. His teacher, Ms. Green, impressed by his efforts,
praised him in front of the class. His classmates started to see him differently too, giving him friendly smiles and
support, which boosted his confidence. Everyone noticed a big change in Jack, except his busy parents.
After a month of hard work, the day of the next exam finally arrived. Jack walked into the examination hall
with confidence, feeling well prepared and ready to face the challenges ahead. As he worked through the test,
everything seemed to flow smoothly. When the bell rang, he felt he could make it this time.
Two days later, the results were announced. Jack was excited to see his amazing grade — B+. “Well done,
Jack! We are all so proud of you!” Ms. Green said. After school, Jack rushed out, eager to show his parents his B+
grade.

Mom and Dad, I have good news to share!” Jack burst into the living room, his face glowing with
excitement. “I got a B+ in the exam!” His parents exchanged surprised glances, and their disbelief was evident. “How
could that be?” His dad asked, frowning. “You’ve never done that well before.” Reflecting on his efforts during
countless days and night,Jack felt kind of hurt but quickly continued in defense of himself. “I’ve been studying really
hard, Mom and Dad. I promise, I didn’t cheat.”
Jack phoned Ms. Green, hoping she could remove his parents’ doubts. “Ms. Green, my parents are skeptical
about my B+ grade. Could you please talk to them? They don’t believe I could have improved so much on my
own.” Ms. Green assured Jack that she would have a heart-to-heart talk with his parents, emphasizing his hard work
and dedication. After several days, when he saw the delicious meal that his parents had prepared for him to express
their apology, nothing could express his delight.
