My dad believed in responsibility! Independence! New experiences! He often used his
fascinating stories of his youth to urge us children to fresh achievements.
One day he came home from work early and saw me watching a local TV show—Talent
Sprouts,a daily contest for kids fourteen and under.Four performances filled the half hour from
5:00 to 5:30.You might watch anything from a violin solo to a magic show.At the end the
performers were spotlighted, and KMTV’s judges named a winner.
It didn’t take Daddy long to look me in the eye.“You should go on Talent Sprouts. You can
play ‘Ave Maria’.Think of it—an unforgettable experience to be on TV as an eleven-year-
old!” Before I argued,he had been already off on his story of the hilarious(滑稽的) glory of
his performance.Thus,though I didn’t want to,I agreed.Actually,I did know Schubert’s
“Ave Maria”,a very easy version that used two hands to simplify those famous arpeggios(琶
音).I did have it memorized.
The next morning,I mailed my application with the required information.I had almost
forgotten about it when the notice came for an audition time on a Saturday afternoon.Daddy said
part of being independent and responsible was to go by myself. The bus went right by the KMTV
studios.
So that Saturday I checked in at the desk and sat down to wait.I was soon called. The host of
Talent Sprouts,Lew Jeffrey, and the musical director,Warren Rudd described the routine for
the participants and told me I could begin to play my piano piece.
Into the eighth measure(小节) I noticed Warren Rudd nod to Lew Jeffrey. That gave me
confidence, and I relaxed.Daddy was over the moon when I told him I had been assigned a day to
perform less than two weeks away.Still,I had very little confidence in my talent.I knew I had an
easy arrangement.I could never have played Schubert’s original.

When my Monday came,I again took the bus to KMTV alone and waited.
Somehow my brain went to work and I continued playing.

When my Monday came,I again took the bus to KMTV alone and waited.Everything was
familiar this time. But hearing the musical sounds and applause from time to time,I felt my heartwas pounding with excitement and nervousness.Eventually,it was my turn.Taking a deep breath,
I calmed down.Confident,I went to the piano and began to play.Easy,so easy! Fun almost...right
up to the coda at the end.I suddenly realized I should not be at the end! My heart jumped to my
mouth.I had skipped a part.A huge part. How did that happen?
Somehow my brain went to work and I continued playing.I tried to smile at the camera and
played the rest smoothly as if no skipping had happened. After what seemed an eternity,I stopped
playing. However,it turned out that my performance had probably lasted barely a minute.Surely
the result was as expected—I wasn’t the winner. On my way home,I surprised myself by feeling
more relieved than disappointed.I could not pretend that my performance was best.In truth, the
other three were far superior. When I came back home to talk about “The Big Skip”,Daddy
smiled,“It may not have been noticed by someone who doesn’t know Schubert’s ‘Ave
Maria’ . Your movement was smooth.You didn’t fall apart.All in all , a worthwhile
experience.”

One morning this summer holiday,I was running on the road when I saw an elderly foreign
lady waving her phone at me,speaking to me in a foreign language.Obviously, she didn’t speak
English at all. When I listened to her more carefully,I found she was speaking German. She was
clearly lost and trying to walk to the house where she lived. She showed me screen shots of maps on
her phone as if she wanted me to help her find her way home.Actually,I learned some German in
my spare time because our school will have German classes the next term. However,I was so poor
at it that it was almost useless in practice.
I studied nearby and I knew my classmate,Lisa, who was good at speaking German. So I
decided to telephone her.“Hi,Lisa.I came across a German lady.Do you have time to come and
act as a translator now ? ” I said and then sent her my location.Unfortunately , Lisa
answered,“Sorry,Belle.I’m shopping now.I can reach your place in about half an hour.”
Hearing that,I had to tell her that I could manage myself.
Suddenly,an idea flashed through my mind.I downloaded a translation app and used the
voice function to translate what the lady said into English.Just in this way,I learned that she came
here to visit her daughter who was new to the city to teach. And I also determined the address she
needed to get to.It was not far from here to her house,so I offered to walk with her to her
destination. She was greatly grateful to me and kept saying sorry for taking my time.
When we got to the house, her daughter just came back. She was as touched by my kindness
as her mother.I kept reminding her that it was no trouble for me,and that I only intended to make
sure her mother got there safely.
Walking with the lady was more rewarding than running alone.Despite having to rely ontechnology to communicate due to the language barrier,I felt lucky to have been able to help
her. When I left,I couldn’t wait to share the wonderful experience with Lisa.

No sooner had I picked up my phone than Lisa called me.
When the German teacher entered the classroom in the new term,I felt I’d seen her

No sooner had I picked up my phone than Lisa called me.“Belle, how is it going? Do you
still need my help?” Lisa asked.“Thanks,Lisa.Everything is OK.And I’d like to tell you
about it,” I said.I told her exactly what had happened, and specifically described how I had
solved the problem.Lisa praised me for my quick wit. Then I asked her to teach me German in case
I needed it later. She promised.By the end of the holiday,I could have already communicated with
her in some simple German words. So I was ready for the new term with confidence.
When the German teacher entered the classroom in the new term,I felt I’d seen her
somewhere before. What amazed me was that she came over to me,saying,“Glad to see you
again!I’m Florence.” I was surprised to find that she was the daughter of the lady that I had
helped during the holiday. What a fantastic fate! As our new foreign teacher,Florence was patient
and considerate. We all respected her and took every lesson seriously.I even made friends with her
mother,so I had more opportunities to practise speaking German.I was resolved to visit Germany
the next summer holiday.

The Right Thing
My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other
goodies by her clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board
games brought home by my beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day,an old model toy car
arrived in the load of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift.My sister
didn’t want it,so it was all mine.I immediately set about to wiping it clean and polishing it to a
bright candy-apple red.It turned to be a thing of beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing
it.My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished,refreshing toy car, with a hint of regret and
envy in her eyes.
As was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when
the family bond got strengthened.I shared the prized toy car with Alex ,my young Frenchcousin.Eyes glued to it,he fell in love with the wonderful, shiny red automobile the instant he
saw it.It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in
life, suffering severe,life-threatening illnesses as a child, leaving him mentally and physically
stuck and the family starved of cash.Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car were
unreachable dreams for him.
Seeing Alex’s consuming thrill brought by the red car,I was seized by immense joy as
well. But contrary to Alex’s excitement,a voice inside me constantly reminded,“Watch out!
He’d keep it for himself.”,which got me faintly worried.I followed my cousin for fear of
something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car.Approaching me,she asked gently in a
low voice,“Would you like to give it to Alex?”

Giving or keeping? I struggled with myself.Giving it? Hardly could I imagine life without the
model car! After all,it was my most precious treasure, which I had been proud of.My heart kept
aching at the prospect of giving it away.Nope! I shook my head determinedly.Glancing at my
mother’s expectant eyes,I couldn’t help sobbing.Keeping it? Definitely,it would otherwise
upset Alex.Torn between the two tough choices,I was totally at a loss.Nevertheless, deep
down,I could feel my affection for Alex.Yep! I resolved to do the right thing.
In the moment of parting,my model car went with Alex.Though I was crushed to see it go,
my heart sang when I saw his beaming face as he tightly clutched it.Seeing the thumbs-up from my
mother and sister,I did swell with relief, pride and joy,for I knew it was not a gift;to some
extent,it was our concern and love for him.Plus, sharing the model car also strengthened our
bond, which,I was fully convinced, would always uplift him.An effort made for the happiness
of others lifted us above ourselves as well.

With the start of new school, freshmen of Hendersonville High School in Nashville were
excited to meet new classmates and teachers.Among them,however,15-year-old Sergio Peralta
was feeling very nervous because his right hand had never fully formed since he was born.Going to
a new school and being “different” is always scary.Sergio was particularly concerned with what
his classmates would think of him.
Sergio’s parents had trained him to use his left hand from an early age.As he grew up,hewas used to not using his right hand.He could write with his left one and do some things with
special tricks or techniques.Despite this,in the first days of new school,Sergio always felt like
hiding his underdeveloped right hand in his sleeve as if nobody would ever find out if he did so.
It didn’t take long for someone to learn Sergio’s secret.Jeff Wilkins, the teacher of
Sergio’s engineering class, figured out that Sergio was missing part of his hand and decided to
do something for the new student.Jeff had been leading a robotics project in the school and expert
in 3D printing technology.Besides,he hoped to take advantage of this hands-on chance to help his
students learn more about engineering and how building a robotic hand worked.
So in his class , Jeff announced with great enthusiasm , “ You’re supposed to be
engineering, coming up with new ideas and solving issues. Now Sergio needs a new hand,so
we’ll work together to build Sergio a robotic hand.” His words fueled everyone’s curiosity
and creativity.
For the next four weeks,Jeff and his class including Sergio worked on the project. After some
precise measurements and researches, the class put forward a design draft.Jeff made a few
adjustments and gave them some practical suggestions. With access to online models and a 3D
printer, they eventually created a robotic hand, which was intended to look good and work
well,like catching something.

Then came the final testing day.The whole class gathered in the science classroom, watching
breathlessly as Jeff carefully loaded their self-made robotic hand onto Sergio’s right arm.It fitted
quite well! So excited was Sergio that his arm trembled slightly.Having put a baseball on the
desk,Jeff signed to Sergio to pick it up.Slowly,Sergio extended his right hand and reached for
the ball.Successfully he caught hold of it and everyone present broke into cheers! Holding the
ball,Sergio couldn’t contain his tears.Never in his life did he expect to catch something with his
right hand!
The life-changing gift for Sergio drew huge attention.Jeff and his students became an instant
hit and various media competed to cover the news. When interviewed about the intention of the
project,Jeff said,“I intended Sergio’s robotic hand to show our support for him.Meanwhile,
I hope to foster students’ scientific spirit through this hands-on operation.” His students stated
that Jeff challenged them to transform abstract concepts into reality, from which they benefited
greatly.Soon voluntary donations poured in,which would go to the school’s scientific research
and help students develop better.五、邻里关系

Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to
move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that
they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others , including their next-door
neighbours.
The neighbourhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby
Rednose.Rumor(流言,传言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day.The only words we
ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the
fence.Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support.
I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls.A suitable playing court was a
headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport
then.We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we
secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
One day,we had a softball game in our yard.Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She
stumbled(绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more.Just at
that moment,Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily,“Look at
what you’ve done to our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what
this rosebush means to me!”
Hearing this,my sisters and I ran into our house.Breathlessly,we told Mom what had
happened.“Girls,I have told you not to play softball near those bushes.Come outside right now
and help me fix them.” “Mom , we thought you didn’t like the couple , ” we
protested.“They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us.We followed her outside to help repair
the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses,Ruby slowly walked out.She
looked sad.And it wasn’t her nose that was red,but her eyes.

Ruby walked over to my mother,we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would
shout first and what terrible things would be said.“We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will
fix them and help weed the roses,” said Mom.My sisters and I looked at each other in horror,
but Ruby smiled through her tears.“I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re
very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees
examining the damaged bushes together.A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life.My mother and Ruby worked together on
the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I.A friendship was
formed between the families.Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our
house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence
wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.

“She needs me.” Those were the exact words I spoke to my husband when I spotted
Dottie,a little dog we found at a local shelter eight years ago.
Dottie leaned(倾斜) away when I tried to pet her and refused to let me hold her. While the
other dogs jumped and barked,Dottie returned to the back of the cage, curled up in a ball,
hoping us to leave her alone.
On the entire drive home,Dottie was in fear. So,upon arrival at our house,we got right to
work.I held her as much as possible, touching her head and softly singing in her ear.We learned
that she loved belly touch , so every time we passed by , we would offer a gentle
touch.Eventually,we noticed her presenting her belly as we walked by her.I knew we were
making real progress when I found her quietly sleeping on a chair one day,her head resting on
one of my shoes. My heart melted(融化) as I realized she had brought it there because it contained
my smell, and she wanted it nearby.
Ever so slowly, our little dog came to life. She began to play with toys, enjoy walks, and
rest on our laps. There was no special treatment,no fancy food or toys. All we did was love
her.And she grew well. She was so broken when we first met her that we had no idea what her true
personality would be.But now we found a sweet, playful, loving soul.
One day,a few years after her adoption,I was busy doing housework around the house,
doing laundry and climbing the stairs from the basement up to the main floor. When I finished,I
sat down and enjoyed a well-deserved break.That’s when I realized I hadn’t seen Dottie for a
while.I called to her and began searching. My heart raced and my pace quickened as I began
checking under beds and behind sofa.

Suddenly,I remembered the door to the basement.
I held her in my arms tightly, telling her how sorry I was.
参考范文
Suddenly,I remembered the door to the basement.I dashed to the door and opened it without
any hesitation. There she sat on the top step, quiet as a mouse, head down, ears hangingdown. She had been following me,as she always did,and I had casually closed the door on
her.So she had to wait quietly for me to find her.I don’t know whether she assumed that she was
being punished, but it was clear that she was hurt, for she behaved differently this time.
I held her in my arms tightly, telling her how sorry I was.I touched her head and rubbed her
belly gently, telling her that she was not making trouble. She let me hold her for exactly one
minute and then suddenly ran off, returning with a toy for me to throw. At that very moment,
Dottie taught me a valuable lesson:Forgive quickly because forgiveness is to light a lamp not just
for others but also for ourselves.Life is short. There is so much love to offer and receive and so
many toys to chase.
