Do you know when Teachers’ Day is usually held? Who is the greatest teacher in
Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28.That was why Chinese people hoped to celebrate Teachers' Day on September 28th. Although
he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to
the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived
during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was
only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young
Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music,
history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that
time only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone
should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something
worthy to be learned. “When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in
some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking
makes people puzzled. All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

COn a June afternoon in 1752, the sky began to get dark over the city. As the storm broke,
most people surely hurried inside, but not Benjamin Franklin. He decided it was the perfect
time to fly a kite. Franklin had been waiting for a chance like this. He wanted to show the
connection between lightning(闪电) and electricity, and to do so, he needed a storm.
He walked into field, and flew a kite with a piece of rope tied to it. A key was tied to the
rope. The lightning hit the kite, and electricity passed through the rope to the key. Franklin
then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock(电击). This, he said, proved(证
明) the electrical nature of lightning.
For many years, schools have taught the story of Franklin’s experiment. Millions of
schoolchildren have been amazed by his courage and his scientific spirit of looking for the
truth. However, new research suggests that the story may be fiction instead of fact. Although
Franklin’s experiment took place, more than one scientist has questioned what really
happened. It’s true that he did the experiment with the rope and the key. But scientists all
agree that if Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the
electric shock.
Scientists often question accepted ideas because they want to find out the facts. Some
have even questioned the story about the apple that fell on Newton’s head. Many reports
suggest that although the falling apple certainly provided ideas, there is nothing to show that
the apple actually hit him on the head.
In fact, fiction is often more interesting than the truth. People have been more
encouraged by Franklin’s spirit than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be
tested by experiments and research, and we should not always believe everything we read or
hear even if it is a great story.

Antarctica(南极洲)is at the southern end of the Earth. It is the coldest, driest and
windiest place on our planet. What would it be like to live and work there?
On Oct 15, 50 Chinese researchers took a ship named Xuelong 2 from Shenzhen to
Antarctica. Xuelong 2 is the first icebreaker(破冰船)made in China. It took two years to
build Xuelong 2. It is reported that Xuelong 2 is one of the world's best research icebreakers.
Chinese researchers have been to Antarctica 35 times. Because of its unusual
environment, researchers from around the world have been going there to do study(研究)
for many years. Some studies can only be done in Antarctica. For example, there is little air
pollution there. This makes it easier for scientists to study the weather, atmosphere(大气)
and stars. The study of Antarctica's geology(地质)is also important. Rocks in Antarctica can tell
us what the weather was like long time ago, and help us understand how the Earth has
changed over time. There are also many wild animals, such as penguins(企鹅), seals(海
豹)and birds. Scientists can learn how animals live in cold places by studying them.
Xie Zhouqing is a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. He
was part of China's 15th research trip to Antarctica. He said, "Life in Antarctica is not easy. It
is tiring and sometimes dangerous, but it is still quite fun. "He also said," I studied how
