Thanks to the bamboo plantations (种植园), giant pandas in Belgium and the UK have
enough fresh bamboo to eat during the COVID-19.
Each week, around 1,000 kilograms of fresh bamboo are delivered(运) from La
Bambouseraie, a bamboo plantation in France, to the Belgian zoo of Pairi Daiza, where two
giant pandas live with their three children.
The history of the La Bambouseraie can be traced back to 1856, when Eugene Mazel
began his first plantings by testing species(种类) from different parts of the world. Today,
more than 240 kinds of bamboos grow in the park. Now more than 20 different species of
bamboos are used to feed the pandas.
Those 1,000 kilograms of bamboo are delivered every week, only a part is eaten by the
pandas. The rest of it is used to feed other animals in the zoo, including elephants, red pandas
and giraffes. In this way, no bamboo is wasted.
In the UK’s Edinburgh Zoo, fresh bamboo comes from the Netherlands. Jo Elliot, a
manager at Edinburgh Zoo, said, “Many of the animals have their own diets—especially the
pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang need their bamboo. Their food has not been affected by the
COVID-19.”
Earlier this month, however, Canada’s Calgary Zoo said it would be returning two giant
pandas to China because limited flights were possible due to COVID-19 and there was not
enough bamboo for the pandas.
