Public education and media campaigns aimed at the general population convey the criminal nature of domestic assault, suggest ways to prevent abuse, and identify where abuse victims can get help. However, to prevent or reduce family violence, education, elements of American culture that contribute to such violence must change. For example, violence in the media must be controlled or eliminated, and traditional gender roles and views of women and children as property must be replaced with egalitarian gender roles and respect for women and children. Another cultural change is to reduce violence-related stress by reducing poverty and unemployment and by providing adequate housing, nutrition, medical care, and educational opportunities for everyone. Though programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) were not designed to prevent domestic violence and abuse, “they provide important assistance to low-income families and thus support the functioning of these families.” Integrating families into networks of community would also enhance family well-being and provide support for families under stress. What social interventions are available for families that are already experiencing abuse or neglect? Abused women and children may seek relief at a shelter or a safe house for abused women. Shelters provide abused women and their children with housing, food, counseling services, legal assistance, employment assistance, and an environment that empowers women by encouraging them to make independent choices about their abusive relationships and about their future. Shelters also provide a communal living situation with other abused women, which reduces the sense of isolation and helps the women express their anger and overcome feelings of guilt and inadequacy. An alternative to shelter is a safe house, a private home of individuals who volunteer to provide temporary housing to abused women who decide to leave their violent homes. Battered men are not allowed to stay at women’s shelters, but many shelters help abused men by providing money for a motel room, counseling, and supporting services. 1. The word “egalitarian” in the first paragraph most probably means “_________”. A. relating to economics B. having to do with equal treatment C. having to do with legal contracts D. relating to everyday events 2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a way to directly reduce violence in families? A. Cutting down on violence in the media.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333 B. Reducing unemployment. C. the AFDC program D. Strengthening family ties 3. According to the passage, which of the following statements does the writer seem to support? A. Providing women more wealth can largely reduce family abuse. B. Unfair attitude towards women is one of the causes of family abuse. C. Laws must be passed to prevent family abuse. D. Women should be equally paid. 4. The last paragraph is organized by ____________. A. listing the order of events in helping abused women B. listing social interventions available to help abused women C. discussing the effects of family violence D. defining the term “safe house.” Reading B Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience. Between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, the planet was much colder than it is now. During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling. Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise. Water froze again during the cold periods. A new study from Switzerland sheds light on where ice sheets melted during the ice age. It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern areas. This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern. Scientists have long assumed that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere during the 30,000-year-long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea, the ice can easily just slip to the ocean instead of building up. The researchers used a computer model to look at the ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time. The model showed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would be a bigger effect on ocean currents and sea temperatures than what actually happened. Studies suggest that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too. The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists could make, was that the ice melted equally in the North and the South. It is still a mystery as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt. 1. We can learn from the text that ___________. A. the earth has experienced temperature cycles about 65,000 years ago B. what caused ice to melt is still unknown C. though it was much colder, temperatures hardly changed during the ice age教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333 D. before the new study, scientists long believed that during the ice age, ice melted just in either northern or southern areas 2. The underlined phrase “sheds light on” (in Paragraph 3) can be replaced by __________ A. throws doubts on B. beats down on C. makes it clear D. makes light of 3. The first two paragraphs were written ___________. A. to introduce the subject that how ice melted during the ice age B. to describe what the weather was like during the ice age C. to compare climate nowadays with that of the ice age D. to explain what a temperature cycle is 4. Which of the following best shows the relationship between ice, ocean currents and temperatures according to the text? A. Ice can easily slip into the ocean. B. Temperature and currents changed as a result of ice melting. C. Temperature changes lead to ice melting or water freezing, which in turn has an effect on ocean currents and temperature D. Ice melted and then froze again due to temperature. Reading C Research has shown that two-thirds of human conversation is taken up not with discussion of the cultural or political problems of the day, not heated debates about films we've just watched or books we've just finished reading, but plain and simple __1__. Language is our greatest treasure as a species, and what do we __2__ do with it? We gossip. About others' behavior and private lives, such as who's doing what with whom, who's in and who's out-and why; how to deal with difficult __3__ situations involving children, lovers, and colleagues. So why are we keen on gossiping? Are we just natural __4__, of both time and words? Or do we talk a lot about nothing in particular simply to avoid facing up to the really important issues of life? It's not the case according to Professor Robin Dunbar. In fact, in his latest book, Grooming, Gossip and the Evolution of Language, the psychologist says gossip is one of these really__5__issues. Dunbar __6__ the traditional view that language was developed by the men at the early stage of social development in order to organize their manly hunting activities more effectively, or even to promote the exchange of poetic stories about their origins and the supernatural. Instead he suggests that language evolved among women. We don't spend two-thirds of our time gossiping just because we can talk, argues Dunbar—__7__, he goes on to say, language evolved specifically to allow us to gossip. Dunbar arrived at his cheery theory by studying the __8__ of the higher primates like monkeys. By means of grooming--cleaning the fur by brushing it, monkeys form groups with other individuals on whom they can rely for support in the event of some kind of conflict within the group or__9__ from outside it. As we human beings evolve from a particular branch of the primate family, Dunbar __10__ that at one time in our history we did much the same. Grouping together made sense because the bigger教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333 the group, the greater the __11__ it provided; on the other hand, the bigger the group, the greater the stresses of living close to others. Grooming helped to __12__ the pressure and calm everybody down. But as the groups got bigger and bigger, the amount of time spent in grooming activities also had to be __13__ to maintain its effectiveness. Clearly, a more __14__ kind of grooming was needed, and thus language evolved as a kind of vocal grooming which allowed humans to develop relationship with ever-larger groups by exchanging information over a wider network of individuals than would be possible by one-to-one __15__ contact. 1.
