Over 40 students with low vision study at a school in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It was designed
by Anand Sonecha, founder of an architecture company. Featuring a bright yellow entrance
door, which stands out against the white walls, the school is decorated with a variety of
sweet-smelling plants everywhere. Inside the classrooms, the walls feel smooth in contrast to
the rough outside of the building. These all help students familiarize themselves with the area
straightforwardly, without any trouble.
The school provides an open space serving as a platform for the visually-challenged
students to play, perform, or celebrate festivals and the students are easy to orient themselves
according to the sound, smell, sight and touch. “The idea behind the design was to make the
school more accessible to the students,” Sonecha says, “They come from remote villages and
towns in Gujarat, and I am eager to help them.”
During the construction, Sonecha used contrasting colors so that students could easily
distinguish between the elements. Blue was used for all classroom doors, yellow for the
entrance gate, black for switch buttons, and yellow and green for the furniture. All these colors
contrasted with the white walls of the school, helping the students locate different elements.
Different areas are of different heights and widths, which makes the sounds and noises change
according to the echo produced in these spaces. Furthermore, he cooperated with fellow
landscape architect Lokendra Balasaria to plant more than 1,000 plants of 37 species. These
sweet plants have been grown not only to lead the children to move in the school through smell
but also to attract butterflies and birds, and provide shade.
“The structure of the building is designed similarly to that of any other school building, only
with a few clever elements. My intention was to avoid making it look distinct from other
schools,” Sonecha explains, “I hope that there are no different schools for such students.
Instead, all these elements should be added to public spaces for them. And my follow-up
efforts may be there.”

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-known Impressionists Joseph Turner and
Claude Monet may have been influenced by air pollution during the Industrial Revolution.
Scientists don’t know exactly how polluted the cities were during that time for lack of data.
However, researchers say that examining the works of Turner and Monet can give a picture of
long-term environmental change with the air pollution.
The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by authors from
Harvard and Sorbonne universities, analyzed 60 oil paintings by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and
38 paintings by Monet from 1864 to 1901. Scientists successfully measured painters’
representation (重现) of nature, focusing on the colors as well as differences in local weather
patterns which influenced coloring. They significantly found that paintings composed in Britain
generally feature a greyer blue sky than works in other parts of Europe.
Researchers particularly believe changes in local sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫) emissions
from burning coal may explain changes in the color contrast and intensity (亮度) of Turner’s
and Monet’s works, even after considering the artistic trends and subject matter of the time.
Generally, artists can historically accurately represent their environment. Turner and
Monet were chosen because they are famous for their landscape and cityscape paintings and
also because they were active during the Industrial Revolution, when air pollution grew at a
rate never seen before.
Additionally, researchers say that since the air in London was much polluted, the cities
would appear grey and dull to the eyes as well as in photographs. By comparing the paintings
of Turner and Monet to photos from the era, they were able to determine the painting works
were definitely influenced by the change in emissions.

Are you more logical or creative? If you believe you’re the former, you might be labeled
“left-brained”; if the latter, then “right-brained”. It’s widely believed that the left brain is for
analysis and the right is for creativity and that our characteristics are determined by which half
is dominant.
However, the idea that people are either left-brained or right-brained is a myth. Although
we all obviously have different personalities and talents, modern brain research hasn’t found
any conclusive evidence of left or right brain dominance. One serious problem of this view is
its one-sided definition of human abilities. Math, for instance, which requires logical thought,
is generally associated with the left brain, but it is also a genuinely creative activity. So is a
gifted mathematician left-brained or right-brained? Likewise, artistic creativity isn’t just
uncontrolled emotion. Many of the greatest works of art are products of thorough, precise
thought.
Like many modern myths, the left/right brain theory is rooted in a bit of real science. In
the 1960s, Nobel Prize-winning research on epilepsy ( 癫痫) patients, who had undergone
surgery to separate the two halves of their brains, made an unexpected discovery: the right half
was better at spatial (空间的) tasks, while the left excelled at language and problem-solving.
Yet the real division of labor in the brain is far more complex than the claim that “the left brain
is for logic and the right is for creativity”.
Then, why is the myth so popular? It satisfies our desire to label ourselves as simple
“types”. This works much like the Barnum Effect, a famous psychological phenomenon:
people easily believe general, positive personality descriptions — like those from MBTI tests
— are true and accurate. Similarly, the left/right brain theory is popular because it gives us a
“scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
