In china, you probably know what rules to follow when you sit down at the dinner table. For
example, it would be bad to bang your chopsticks on the table or push your chopsticks into your
rice. However, many foreigners may not know any of these rules. In fact, most countries have
quite different ideas about what good table manners are.
People in Ethiopia eat everything with their hands and help themselves to food from the same
plate. They actually believe that using a knife or a spoon wastes food. However, in Chile, people
believe it’s rude to eat with your hands. They even use a knife and fork to eat sandwiches! You
should also wait for your host to offer you more food. Don’t take more without asking first.
Egyptian people have a similar idea about serving yourself. It’s the custom to wait until someone
else refills your glass. In Pakistan, people eat quietly, but in Japan, making lots of noise when
eating noodles is encouraged.
Around the world, the rules for dinner go further than the food. In Canada, arriving last for a meal
is completely acceptable. People in Tanzania actually think it’s rude for someone to arrive early
for dinner!
If you can learn these simple rules before travelling, you’ll always be a welcome dinner guest
anywhere in the world!
