Radio host: Our next caller is Tammy. Tammy, you’re on the air.
Tammy: I live near an underground station. This morning, the ground outside the station was
clean. But in the afternoon, some people started giving out advertisements outside the
station. Many people threw these advertisements on the ground. Now the road is full
of litter. What can we do?
Radio host: Well you can go out with your friends and help pick up the litter. You can also ask the
workers at the underground station to put a sign saying, “Do not litter .”
Tommy: Thanks. That sounds great.
Radio host: I’m glad to help. Now we have Louise. How can we help you, Louise?
Louise: My family has a lot of problems with noise pollution. Fist, our neighbour plays the
drums and we cannot sleep at night ! Next is the awful noise from cars. That goes on
all day. Finally, next year, there’ll be a building site nearby. It’ll be noisy. What can
we do?
Radio host: Well, when you have a noisy neighbour, you need to talk to the building manager. As
for the cars and building site, You can contact the city government and see if that helps.

四、阅读理解
1970 was “World Conservation Year”. The UN wanted everyone to know that the world was
in danger - they hoped that governments would act quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is
one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in
Holland, but now only remain 860. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his
technology. We are changing the earth, the air and the water, and everything that grows and lives
here. We can't live without these things. If it continues like this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask "What must we do
now?" The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of
them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant 10
trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large
group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about
conservation through a record called NO ONE'S GOING TO CHANGE OUR WORLD. It was
made by the Beatles and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.
1. The UN set up "World Conservation Year" because_________.
A. the world was in danger of war
B. the government had done something to protect the world
C. many things were destroyed by the technology
D. man and his technology destroyed the earth badly
2. ________kinds of plants have disappeared in Holland in the past few years.

Energy is very important, and should be used with care. However, it is said that people in the
US waste about 58 per cent of all the energy they produce. That is a lot of energy. For example,
Americans wasted $2.8 billion a year by leaving their computers on all night. Some people also
leave their cars running when they go into shops, leave lights on at home and keep the central
heating on high all the time.
Why do these people waste energy? One reason may be that most kinds of energy -- like
electricity and petrol-- seem cheap. At the same time, the cost of saving energy can be high. For
example, an energy-saving washing machine, or air conditioner can be much more expensive than
a common washing machine or air conditioner. Much of our energy is wasted because houses do
not keep out the cold in winter or keep out the heat in summer. Yet, an energy—saving house can
be thousands of dollars more expensive than a common house. In addition, new cars save much
more energy and produce much less pollution than old cars, but they can be as much as ten times
more expensive, so many people cannot afford to buy them.
This waste of energy adds to the problems of global warming and acid (酸性的)rain.
Global warming, happens because the Sun's heat, is kept in by gases in the atmosphere.
This causes the world to get warmer and warmer. Acid rain is caused by chemicals in the
atmosphere. Acid rain damages old buildings and destroys forests. Trees are dying and so are
millions of animals living in the forests. If Americans just switch things off when they are not
using them and have more energy-saving products with less money, it will help a lot in solving
these two problems.
1. How much do Americans waste by leaving their computers on all night every year?
2. What do you mean by “air conditioner” in Chinese?
3. Does an energy—saving house cost less money than a common one?
4. Why does global warming happen?
5. We can help solve the problems of global warming and acid rain by saving energy, can’t we?
参考答案1. $2.8 billion 2. 空调3. No. 4. Because the Sun's heat is kept in by gases in
the atmosphere. 5. Yes
