the problem. Let’s get ready.”

Water pollution
There are fewer living things in the waters of the world. Factories and towns have poured a lot of
rubbish into lakes, rivers and the sea. Natural disasters such as floods increase water pollution by
bringing ran-off from farms. This has killed many fish and put many other kinds of animal in
danger. It is also bad for humans, as it makes the water dangerous to drink or swim in.
Global warming,
The glaciers in the mountains of the Alps in Europe are melting along with ice in the Arctic. Sea
levels are rising too. This is because temperatures on earth rose by more than one degree in the
1990s. We will face many problems including weather-related natural disasters if the world
continues getting warmer. Life on Earth may be in danger.
Typhoons
Many of the typhoons are formed in east of the Philippines. About three or four of them hit china
every year. The typhoons always bring high winds, and often bring heavy rain. They are usually
stronger over the sea than over the land.
Forest fires,
In Southeast Asia, many of the forest fires are started by farmers. They want to make room for
new fields of crops. They use forest fires to clear the land. The fires can burn thousands of square
kilometers. It is a big problem because the trees produce oxygen, and are the homes of many
endangered animals.
Asteroids
If an asteroid hit the earth, it will be really bad. An asteroid as big as a 20-storey building has an
amount of energy equal to the largest nuclear bombs made today. If an asteroid is a mile wide, it is
likely to kill all the life on earth. Let's hope that will never happen.
1. How many natural disasters are there in the passage?
2. What problems will we face if the world continues getting warmer?
3. What do the typhoons always bring?
4. Why do the farmers start to use the forest fires?
5. What will happen if an asteroid is a mile wide?
参考答案：1. Five. 2. We will face many problems including weather-related natural
disasters. 3. High winds, and heavy rain. 4. To clear the land and make room for new fields
of crops and. 5. It is likely to kill all the life on earth.
