篇完整的短文。
I recently went SKYDIVING! It’s something I’ve been talking about doing since last year,
but to be honest, it was planned super last minute… like within a matter of a few weeks.
It all started when I ran into a friend of mine walking home from a local festival earlier this
summer. We started chatting about what we’d both been up to this summer and somehow got on
the subject of both being interested in going skydiving someday. My friend, Denny, said he’d be
onboard if I really wanted to schedule a jump and I was so excited to finally have someone to go
with!
Later that night, we texted back and forth and decided on our jump date a few weeks in the
future. When the very Sunday came, we were both FULL of excitement for our first skydiving
experience. He had been bungee jumping before and I’d done my fair share of zip-lining, but
neither of us figured that either of those of experiences would prepare us for what we had in store.
The drive there didn’t happen without a slight delay. As soon as we got off the through-way
on to the exit towards the small town where the skydiving facility was, Denny’s car started to
make a strange noise, forcing us to pull over on a busy interstate (州际公路).
Only 20 minutes away from WNY Skydiving (the place where we were going), we
discovered we had a flat tyre (轮胎). At that point, I felt pretty defeated. Our scheduled time was 4
pm — the last appointment time of the day — so I figured they wouldn’t be able to wait for or
delay the operations for us since we were racing against the light.

From an early age, Patti Wilson was told that she was an epileptic (癫痫患者). However, she
was a lively and enthusiastic girl, looking at her illness as simply “an inconvenience”. She never
focused on what she had lost, but on what she had left. One day, Patti said to her father, who was a
morning jogger, “Daddy, I’d really love to run with you every day, but I’m afraid I’ll have an
epileptic fit.”
Her father told her, “Don’t worry, my girl. I know how to handle it! Let’s start running then!”
It was a wonderful experience for the father and daughter to run together every day. After a
few weeks, the ambitious girl told her father, “Daddy, What I’d really love to do is to break the
world’s long-distance running record for women.” The father checked the Guinness Book of
World Records and found that the farthest any woman had run was 80miles.
That year, she completed her run to San Francisco, which is a distance of 400 miles. She was
wearing a T-shirt, reading, “I Love Epileptics”. Her father ran every mile at her side, and her mom,
a nurse, followed in a motor home behind them in case anything went wrong. But nothing
happened at all while she was running.
As a senior high school student, Patti announced that she was determined to run from her
hometown up to the White House, which is a distance of more than 3000 miles away. Her
classmates got behind her. They built a giant poster that read, “Run, Patti, Run!” This has since
become her motto and the title of a book she later has written.

Different sports filled my days in my youth. I dreamed or a big win some day, with a big
trophy (奖杯). I was skillful and fast, or so I thought. However, I soon learned my skills seemed
quite weak because the bigger, stronger boys seemed to occupy every corner of the playground.
Once I was in the 100-yard hurdles, the only recognition I received for my performance was two
bloody knees.
In college, I took a swim competition, dreaming of the glory! It turned out I achieved
nothing. As an older adult, I still maintained an active lifestyle. In 2010 I signed up for a stair-
climbing challenge to raise money for fighting against lung cancer. My father had died of the same
disease, so this was a meaningful cause for me. Then, in 2019,the organization offered an even
more challenging climb option: the vertical (垂直的) mile. So I would have three hours to climb
up and down twenty-eight floors fifteen times, plus three more.
I trained hard. When the challenge started. I felt confident. But soon my legs started feeling
heavy. What was worse, I began experiencing leg cramps ( 抽 筋 ). My progress slowed
dramatically and I quickly fell behind. When came down after finishing lap 14, it was past the
time limit, so my big win had escaped once again.Soon after the climb, I struggled to experience the sense of self-satisfaction. And I had, after
all, set a goal for myself to prove what I was made of, what I had inside me. And what I had inside
me was, “Nice try, but you didn’t make it.” So, a year later, at age 62 and after numerous
workouts, I was back. Like last year, I was well ahead after an hour and I again started feeling
some discomfort in my legs. I heard myself cry out loud, “Oh, no not again!” I finally stopped and
sat down on the stairs, feeling quite depressed and wondering if my dream was over. A few
climbers stopped to offer help. I was touched, but embarrassed to accept. Except for one climber.
An angel climber, really.
Jessica, who I happened to know, was a salesman’s friend when I bought new running shoes
at his store. And without that connection, she might have climbed past me as I sat on those steps,
my legs shaking. But all those things did happen, and Jessica stopped to help.

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day
without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended
training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star
players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.
Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player
was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining
the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won
honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he
knew he would never be one of them.
Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into
basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or
by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the
morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.
It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys
were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas.
Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him.
“My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you
need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his

A few years ago, my wife Sue had some fairly serious health problems. She had suffered
surgery after surgery and had also put on weight for several years. Diets had not helped her.
One day we sat down and drew up a “wish list” of the things we wanted most out of life.
One of Sue’s items was to run in a marathon. Given her history and physical limitations, I thought
her goal was completely unrealistic, but Sue became committed to it.
She began by running very slowly around. Every day she ran just a little farther than she
had the day before just one driveway more. “When will I ever be able to run a mile?” Sue asked
one day. Soon she was running three. Then five. “We can change ourselves for the better and cause
ourselves to pursue our most precious desires with almost total success,” Sue said and registered
to run in the St. George Marathon in southern Utah.
I drove the mountainous road from Cedar City to St. George. When the marathon began, I
parked the car near the finish line and waited for Sue to come in. Five hours later, it was raining
steadily and the wind was cold. Several cold and injured runners had been transported past me,
and I began to panic. The image of Sue, alone and cold, off the road somewhere, made me sick
with worry. The fast and strong competitors had finished long ago, and runners were becoming
fewer and fewer. Now I could not see anyone in either direction.
Almost all of the cars along the marathon route had left, and some normal traffic was
beginning. I was able to drive directly up the race route. There were still no runners in view afterdriving almost two miles. Then I went around a bend in the road and spotted two runners running
up ahead.

The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool,
racing to the other side. Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board.
“Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You
cannot make me do this!” he said.
Sadie patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren
stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said. Ren stepped on the diving
board, vputting his goggles (护目镜)vover his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistleblew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into
the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t
coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏),and
it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up,
feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you
use your arms or legs?”Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then
looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes.“I can’t swim. My parents never taught me as a
kid. We are afraid of water.”
Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry. I will teach you how to swim. The water is
my favourite place to be.”Ren thought for a while, and nodded gently.

Eartha lost her balance and fell heavily onto the floor. “I’ll never be as flexible as you are,
Grandma.” she sighed softly.
Eartha’s Grandma had been practising yoga for more than 50 years, who could twist, bend
and curl her body with ease. She could even stand on her hands and pull her body into different
poses.
“Eartha, your name means ‘patience’.You need patience for yoga,” said her Grandma.
Like many schools in the country,Eartha’ s school held an annual yoga competition. Eartha
wanted to make her Grandma proud. But she could hardly stand on one leg.
Grandma returned to the kitchen.Eartha kept practicing hard. She stood straight, her arms at
her sides. She moved her hands and knees, arching her back. All of these poses were easy, while
the competition was certain to be harder. So she tried more challenging poses, lying on her
stomach and pushing up on her hands. Her arms soon got tired and she collapsed to the floor.
Eartha wandered into the kitchen.
“Finished already?” asked Grandma.
“It’s hard,” Eartha said. “How did you get to be so strong?”
Grandma smiled. “Patience.”
The next morning, Eartha felt ached and sore all over the body. Her legs hurt so badly from
the poses she practiced that she even wanted to quit. However, her grandmother’s words echoed in
her mind, and she held the pose for a longer time.
Each day Eartha would practice anew pose, before going over the poses she had practiced
the previous few days. With the date of the competition approaching, she started to feel stronger
and more flexible. Her arms and legs stopped trembling.
The day of the yoga competition arrived as expected. In the gym, Eartha lay on her back
with her knees bent and placed her hands on the floor behind her. Everything went smoothly. Just
then,so eager was she to win Grandma’s pride that her poses displayed a mix of impatience, and
rigidness. Eartha fell on the mat, which cost her edge over other competitors. A bell rang, ending
the first half of the competition.

Nila sat alone on the bus. Her older sister, Lexi, was one seat ahead, acting as if this was the
best day ever. But for Nila, it was the worst. It was the last day of swimming lessons. Test Day.
“If I pass my test, I can sign up for Junior Lifeguarding over the summer,” Nila heard Lexi
telling her friend Jess. “You’re the best swimmer in the class,” Jess said. “There’s just no way you
wouldn’t pass.” Maybe she could talk to Lexi about the test, who passed Level 4 several summers
ago.
“I thought sisters were supposed to help each other actively,” Nila whispered to the window.
An hour later, she held the edge of the pool, shaking. “For the last part of the test, you’ll all be
swimming the width of the pool,” the instructor, Nate, told the class. “Can we swim in the shallow
end?” Nila asked. “Nope,” Nate said cheerfully. “To pass Level 4, it has to be the deep end.”
Nila was nervous. She didn’t know if she could swim all the way across without touching the
bottom. “I’ll be watching from the other side,” Nate said. “Ready?” No! Nila thought. But Nateput the whistle to his lips and blew. Nila took a deep breath and pushed off. Lexi moved up and
down, feeling light. She completed smoothly and passed Level 7! A kid from her class bumped
into her, but she just smiled at him. She liked everyone right now. Nila, too–even though she’d
been such a pest earlier. Where was she, anyway?
After a minute, Lexi spotted her sister crossing the pool. Nila was way behind the others. As
Nila neared the middle of the pool, she stopped. “Keep going,” Lexi called. “You can do it!”
When Nila found out her position, her heart sank. Only halfway across! Some kids in her class
were already at the wall, playing and talking. Nate was bending over to talk to one of the kids. He
didn’t see her. Better keep going, she thought. But she was tired. Lexi kept her eyes on her sister’s
slow progress.

Luis scanned the field. The soccer ball was tucked (盘带) between his feet. He searched and
searched until… there! His friend Nicholas was wide open. He passed the ball to Nicholas.
Nicholas trapped the ball and swung his leg back, kicked, and…
GOAL!!! Luis leaped up and down, celebrating. Just then, Devon walked up, his face
twisted in anger. Devon had started playing soccer during breaks with them a few weeks ago. He
was a nice enough guy when he felt like things in the game had gone his way. But when he felt
like they hadn’t, watch out.
“Why didn’t you pass the ball to me, Luis?” Devon shouted.
“Guy, you weren’t open. It’s just that simple.” Luis responded.
“I’m fast though!” Devon protested, his voice still loud and angry.
Luis ignored him. He didn’t like being dragged into arguments. So that’s what he did with
Devon most of the time —just ignored him. It almost always worked.
“I don’t like the way that Devon talks after soccer,” Nicholas said. Luis looked up from his
book. They took the same bus after school.
“What do you mean?” he asked as Nicholas sat down.
“He’s always yelling at people and bragging (吹嘘) about himself.” Luis nodded. That was
true. “It isn’t right,” Nicholas continued. “It makes soccer less fun. I want to tell him that he can’t
play with us anymore. I already talked to all the other guys and they all agreed with me,” Nicholas
said. His eyes were set in determination.
The bus started to slow down for Nicholas’ stop. Nicholas stood up, swinging his backpack
back onto his shoulder. Luis watched as Nicholas ran off the bus. Although everyone had been
getting a bit sick of Devon ruining soccer for a while, shutting him out seemed too extreme. He
spent the rest of the ride trying to figure out what he should do.

My dream comes true
The rain had started to fall gently through the evening air as darkness fell over Sydney. The
noise was deafening. As I walked towards the track, I glanced around me at the sea of faces in the
stands, but mind was focused. The Olympic gold medal was just minutes away, hanging
tantalizingly (引诱人地) in the distance.
My heart was beating loudly. I was so close to the realization of my childhood dream and
the feeling was fantastic. I knew I would have to push myself beyond my known limits to ensure
that my dream came true.
I tried to keep my head, telling myself not to panic, to stick to the plan and run my own
race. I knew the Russian girls would set off quickly-and I had to finish this race fewer than ten
seconds behind the Russian athlete Yelena Prokhorova. If I could do that, the title would be mine.
I looked out along the first stretch of the 400 m track and caught my breath.
My ankle was bandaged against an injury in the long jump just a couple of hours earlier, but
I shut out all thoughts of pain. The starting gun was fired, and the race began. The first lap was good, and I managed to
keep up with the group, but I was feeling much more tired than I usually did, and much more than
I’d imagined. Both the long, hard weeks of training that had led up to this championship, and the
exhaustion from two days of fierce competition were showing in my performance. Mental and
physical tiredness were starting to over- come me, and I had to fight back.
Prokhorova had set the pace from the start. It was important that I didn’t let her get too far
in front. I had to stay with her. At the bell I was 2.3 seconds behind her. Just one lap to go. One
lap. I could do it. I had to keep going. I could see the gap opening between me and the Russian.
Thankfully, my foot was holding out, so now it was all down to mental stamina (耐力).

Edward and Stephen were both eighteen years old. They were so together in friendship thatthey felt themselves to be brothers. They had known each other since childhood, growing up in the
same block in Liverpool.
Edward was fair and lean, while Stephen was dark and short. Edward’s brown hair was
always falling over his eyes, while Stephen wore his black hair in a natural style.
Each youngster had a dream of someday becoming champion of the world. Whenever they
had time, the boys worked out at the Fencing (击剑) Club. Early morning sunrises would find
them running along the Mersey River, wrapped in sweatshirts, with short towels around their
necks.
Edward and Stephen studied hard and dreamt positively. Between them, they had a
notebook filled with torn tickets of every fencing match they had ever attended. They each had
taken part in many elimination bouts (淘汰赛) and had won many gold medals. The difference
was in their style.
As fencers, Edward’s lean form and long reach made him better in attack, while Stephen’s
short and muscular frame made him speed y in movement. Whenever they had met in the piste (击
剑台), it had always been intense and competitive.
After a series of elimination bouts, they were informed that they were to meet each other in
the finals next month —the winner to represent the Club in the Championship Tournament.
Fencing was like any other profession. The two boys knew friendship had nothing to do
with it. But how would the competition affect their relationship? Everyday they continued to run
together along the Mersey River. However, while joking with each other, they both sensed an
invisible wall rising between them.
The day before the finals, they met as usual for their daily workout. After a mile or so,
Stephen stopped.

I’ve always had a love for basketball, so when it came time to continue my basketball

that I was going to face a pretty big challenge in the form of a new transfer student: Chet Harrison.
Harrison had just transferred from another school, Westmoreland High School, where he
had already been playing for the varsity team. There were rumors floating around that he was
nearly guaranteed a spot playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and maybe even
the National Basketball League someday.
I’ll admit, the kid was a natural talent when it came to playing basketball. But Harrison’s
biggest weakness was his personality. He seemed selfish and sometimes acted like a bully, always
seeking attention and showing off after scoring goals. Despite his loyal following of fans, Icouldn’t stand him. But after Coach Moore said that Harrison and I would be playing together, I
decided to accept it and make peace with the situation.
After months of putting up with Harrison’s attitude, I nearly had enough. Just before the
winter break, however, we played a home match against Harrison’s old school Westmoreland and
we lost. Harrison in particular felt utterly embarrassed.
