Miss Green was very fat and she was getti ng fatter every month. So she went to see her
doctor. The doctor said, “You need a diet, Miss Green, and I have a good one here.” He gave her a

come back and see me after two weeks.”
Miss Green came again two weeks later, but she wasn't thinner; she was a little fatter than
before. The doctor was surprised and asked, “Are you eating the things on page 11 of the small
book？” “Yes, doctor.” She answered.
The next day the doctor visited M iss Green during her dinner. “Miss Green，” he asked,
“Why are you eating potatoes and bread? They aren't in your diet.” “But, doctor，” Miss Green
answered, “ I ate my diet at lunchtime. This is my dinner.”

Once there was a piano player in a bar(酒吧). People came just to hear him play. But one
night, a lady asked him to sing a song.
“ I don't sing,” said the man.
But the lady told the waiter, “I'm tired of listening to the piano. I want the player to sing！”
The waiter shouted across the room, “Hey, friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song！”
So he did. He has never sung in public. Now he was singing for the first time! Nobody has
ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!
He had talent(天赋)he was sitting on! Maybe he has lived the rest of his life as a noname
piano player in a noname bar. But once he found, by accident, that he could sing well, he went on
working hard and became one of the bestknown singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole.

better than you think. With hard wo rk, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have no
success at all if you just sit on your t alent.
