Flying Apsaras Awards Highlight a Strong Year for Chinese Dramas

On the evening of October 9, the 35th Flying Apsaras Awards and the 29th Starlight Awards were announced at a ceremony in Yantai, Shandong Province. Organised by the National Radio and Television Administration and the Shandong government, the awards are the highest government honours for TV dramas and TV arts in China, presented every two years.

Sixteen dramas, including Northwest Years, Sheng Wanwu and My Altay, collected the Excellent TV Drama Award, while fourteen documentaries and children's programmes took home Starlight Awards. Song Jia was named Best Actress for playing principal Zhang Guimei in Mountain Flowers Bloom. Having already won the Magnolia and Golden Eagle awards for the same role, she became the first Chinese actress to complete a grand slam of the three major TV awards with one character. Wang Renjun won Best Actor, Liu Jiacheng was named Best Director, and a four-person team took Best Screenplay for The Silent Honour.

This year's winning works cover realistic subjects, revolutionary history and military themes, presenting the rich variety of Chinese TV dramas in recent years. The ceremony was held in Yantai for the first time, bringing the industry's top honour to the coastal city.

China's Autumn Grain Harvest Passes Half as Winter Planting Begins

On October 10, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced that, according to its latest agricultural survey, more than half of China's autumn grain has been harvested. The harvest entered its peak period after Cold Dew, a traditional solar term that usually falls in early October, and autumn planting for the coming year is also under way across the country.

Progress varies by region: in the southwest about 75 percent has been brought in, over 50 percent along the middle and lower Yangtze, over 60 percent in the Huang-Huai-Hai plains, 55 percent in the northwest and about 35 percent in the northeast. Winter wheat sowing has begun, and over 10 percent of the winter rapeseed is in the ground.

To keep the work on track, the ministry has dispatched six teams and expert groups to twelve key provinces, guiding grain collection, sowing and autumn field management. It has also issued province-specific planting guides and drought advice for the Huang-Huai-Hai region, and organised online training. On many farms, smart harvesters equipped with BeiDou navigation and sensors control their speed in the fields, cutting grain loss and protecting the soil.
