The Eiffel Tower isn’t just a symbol of Paris，but a symbol for all of France．

Things to know before you go
Plan your visit in advance and book skip-the-line tickets to avoid a long wait time．
If you purchase an admission ticket for Eiffel Tower summit access，you’ll head
straight to the top before stopping at the lower levels on your downward journey．
There are ATMs and souvenir shops on the ground floor．
The tower’s first two levels are wheelchair accessible，but the summit is not．
You’ll be required to undergo a security screening before entering the tower．
How to get there
Take metro line 6 to Bir Hakeim or RER line C to the Champ de Mars station．For
better views，take metro line 6 or 9 to the Trocadero stop across from the River Seine．

Mary Flannery O’Connor was born on March twenty-fifth，1925，in the southern city
3of Savannah，Georgia．The year she was born，her father developed a rare disease called
lupus（狼疮）．He died of the disease in 1941．By that time the family was living in the
small southern town of Milledgeville，Georgia，in a house owned by Flannery’s mother．
Life in a small town in the American South was what O’Connor knew best．Yet she
said，“If you know who you are，you can go anywhere．” Many people in the town of
Milledgeville thought she was different from other girls．She was kind to everyone，but she
seemed to stand to one side of what was happening，as if she wanted to see it better．Her
mother was her example．Her mother said，“I was brought up to be nice to everyone and
not to tell my business to anyone．”
Flannery also did not talk about herself．But in her writing a silent and distant anger
explodes from the quiet surface of her stories．Some see her as a Roman Catholic（天主教
的）religious writer．They see her anger as the search to save her moral being through her
belief in Jesus Christ．Some see her not writing about things，but presenting the things
themselves．She said，“I see the world from the perspective of Christianity．This means
that for me，the meaning of life is focused on Christ’s redemption（救赎）of us，and
everything in the world is related to it in my eyes．”
The following year，1949，she moved to New York City．She soon left the city and
lived with her friend Robert Fitzgerald and his family in the northeastern state of
Connecticut．Fitzgerald says O’Connor needed to be alone to work during the day．And she
needed her friends to talk to when her work was done．
While writing her first novel，Wise Blood，she was stricken with the disease lupus that
had killed her father．The treatment for lupus weakened her．She moved back to Georgia
and lived the rest of her life with her mother on a farm outside Milledgeville．

When lightning caused fires around California’s Big Basin Redwoods State Park north of Santa
Cruz in August 2020，the fire spread quickly．Mild fires strike coastal redwood（红杉）
forests about every decade．The giant trees resist burning thanks to the bark（树皮），up to
about 30 centimetres thick at the base，which contains acids．Their branches and needles are
normally beyond the reach of flames．But this time flames shot through the top of 100-
4metre-tall trees，burning the needles．“It was shocking，” says Drew Peltier，a tree expert
at Northern Arizona University．“It really seemed like most of the trees were going to
die．”
Yet many of them lived．In a paper published yesterday in Nature Plants，Peltier and
his colleagues help explain why：The survivors use long-held energy reserves—sugars that
had been made from sunlight decades earlier—and poured them into buds（芽）that had
been lying dormant（休眠的）under the bark for centuries．
“This is one of those papers that challenges our previous knowledge on tree
growth ，” says Adrian Rocha ， an ecosystem ecologist at the University of Notre
Dame．“It is amazing to learn that carbon taken up decades ago can be used to sustain
its growth into the future．” The findings suggest redwoods have the tools to cope with
big fires driven by climate change，Rocha says．Still，it’s unclear whether the trees could
cope with the regular infernos that might occur under a warmer climate environment．
The fire in 2020 was so intense that even the top branches of many trees burned and their ability
to photosynthesize（光合作用）went up in smoke along with their pine needles．Trees
photosynthesize to create sugars and other carbohydrates（碳水化合物），which provide the
energy they need to grow and repair tissue．Trees do store some of this energy，which they
can call on during a drought or after a fire．Although the redwoods have sprouted（长出）
new growth，Peltier and other forest experts wonder how the trees will cope with far less
energy from photosynthesis，given that it will be years before they grow as many needles
as they had before the fire．“They’re alive，but I would be a little concerned for them in
the future．”

5The first-ever fine for space junk was issued in early October in a case of off-planet
environmental enforcement（执法）．The television company，Dish Network，was hit with a
$125，000 fine by the United States government for failing to remove a satellite in orbit
that would have risked a collision（撞击）with other space equipment，a safety concern that
will only grow with time as off-planet activities increase．
According to NASA，debris（碎片）orbiting in space can travel up to 15 kilometres per
second，which is nearly 10 times faster than the velocity（速度）of a bullet．A huge amount
of damage can be caused by something just a few centimetres in size，meaning that every
effort must be taken to keep space as clear as possible．Collisions that take place in space
have an effect back on Earth．Damaged satellites impact our ability to use the Internet and
navigation（导航），leaving increasingly global critical infrastructure in an unstable state．
One solution for this may be to send autonomous space vehicles into orbit，which can
then catch and effectively de-orbit space junk．By utilizing tools such as robotic arms，or
nets，this approach will require very precise track and fine cooperation in order to be
successful．Such measures are yet to catch up with the increase in space activity and pollution
currently occurring．Therefore，fines and regulatory enforcement may presently be the only
realistic method to hold organizations accountable．
The Dish Network satellite，fined $125，000 by the Federal Communications
Commission ， failed to de-orbit as a lack of fuel stopped the satellite from fully
decommissioning（退役）a safe distance from Earth，falling short by around 75 miles（120
kilometres）．It is hoped that significant fines like these will serve as a warning for
companies，forcing them to make sure the safe decommissioning of their space operations．

Bake the sugar cookies for 9 to 11 minutes，or until edges are set．Let rest on the
