One spring morning many years ago, I was on southeastern Alaska’s Kupreanof Island when I saw a huge
wolf caught in a trap. From her appearance, I realized it was a mother wolf and that somewhere hungry pups (小
崽) were waiting for her. I guessed she had been trapped only a few days. So her pups were probably still alive,
hungry, surely no more than a few miles away. But I thought if I released the wolf, she would tear me to pieces.
So I decided to search for her pups instead. Following some footprints, I finally found four tiny pups. One by
one, I placed them in a bag and headed back. When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood up, possibly picking up
the smell of her young. I released the pups, and they raced to her.
What next? I wondered. The mother wolf was clearly suffering. Ye t each time I moved in her direction, she
let out a threatening sound.
I put up a shelter for myself and was soon asleep nearby. At dawn, I was awakened by the four pups sniffing
at my face and hands. I glanced toward the anxious mother wolf. If I could only win her confidence, I thought. It
was her only hope. Over the next few days, I fed her, talked gently with her and played with the pups. But the big
animal never took her eyes off me. When I was beginning to lose hope, at dusk on the fifth day, I saw a wagging
(摇摆) of her tail. I moved within the length of her chain. She remained still. My heart in my mouth, I slowly
placed my hand on the wolf’s injured leg. “OK,” I said, “We’ll have you out of there.” I pressed and the trap
sprang open, the wolf pulled free.

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they
sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing
health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your
blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to
your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to
circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't
feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues.
So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed.
Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below
your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause
numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being
able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “ pins and needles ” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort
may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve
damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only
will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

The rainforests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging (刺人的) tree known as Dendrocnide. Many people
call it the gympie-gympie tree — a name given to the tree by indigenous Australians. It’s covered with sharp,needle-like hairs that carry poison. If you brush up against a gympie-gympie tree, you won’t forget it anytime
soon. The pain can stay with you for hours, days or weeks. In some cases, it’s been reported to stay for months.
Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of
Queensland have discovered what makes this stinging plant so painful. After carefully studying different kinds of
gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This
allowed them to identify a group of chemicals that they believed was responsible for the pain.
The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”. Sure enough,
when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked (舔) at the places where they’d been injected,
indicating that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found
that they formed a knot-like shape. The shape makes the chemical very stable, which helps explain how the pain
lasts so long.
The knot-like shape of the gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and
con e snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all use similar poisons. Spiders
and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It’s not clear how stinging
helps the gympie-gympie tree.
Though the tree’s sting may stop some animals from eating it, it doesn’t stop all animals. Beetles and
pademelons (small relatives of the kangaroo) are able to eat the plant without trouble.
