Where can you find a nice place to relax on holiday for both you and your children?
Well, I suggest you try the beautiful and green Isle of Wight (IOW). The Isle of
Wight is one of the main tourist attractions. Here is some information on a few of the
attractions on the IOW.
Dinosaur Isle
It is located in Sandown, a seaside town on the southeast coast. Its a large,
lovely museum, both fun and educational. Here you can see a large fossil collection of

future, learning about the history and the development of the civilization of dinosaurs
that lived 120 million years ago.
Robin Hill Country Park
The park is in the beautiful countryside, and is suitable for childrens parties and
games. It has five new gardens, and offers great opportunities to see and take
pictures of the rare red squirrels.
The West of the Wight
Here we have the Marine Aquarium, the Archaeology Exhibition and the Model
Railway. They offer another opportunity to combine entertainment with learning. This is
a great place to see ancient boats crossing the narrow strait between the island and the
mainland.
The Wight Bus Museum
This museum is run completely by unpaid volunteers. It has a bus collection stored
in what was once a warehouse (仓库). Most of the buses in the museum date back

The Necklace is a short story by Guy de Maupassant. It tells the
story of Madame Mathieu Lisle and her husband Charles. Mathieu
always imagines herself in a high social position with wonderful jewels.
However, she has nothing and marries a low-paid clerk who tries his
best to make her happy.
Through lots of begging at work, Charles is able to get two
invitations to the Ministry of Public Instruction Party. Mathieu refuses
to go, for she has nothing to wear. Her husband is upset to see her
sadness. Using money that he saved to buy a rifle, he gives Mathilde
400 francs and asks his wife to buy a dress that suits her. Mathieu
goes out and buys a dress. However, even with the clothes, Mathieu
is still not happy as she has no jewels to wear with it. The couple does
not have much money left, so her husband suggests Mathieu borrow
something from her friend, Madame Jeanne Frostier. Mathilde picks
out the fanciest diamond necklace that she can find. After attending the
Ministry of Public Instruction Party, Mathieu discovers that she has
lost the necklace.
Mathieu and her husband forage everywhere, but the necklace is
not to be found. So they have to take out loans (贷款) from generous
friends to buy a diamond necklace that looks just like the one that was
lost. It takes them ten years of hard labor to pay the loans back.
Towards the end, Mathieu takes a walk, recalling her past and the
night when the necklace was lost. Suddenly, she comes across
Madame Jeanne Frostier. Mathieu confesses (坦白) about that night
and how she worked so hard to return her necklace. Madame Jeanne
Frostier, deeply moved, tells Mathieu that the one she borrowed

Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I
need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own
breathing. So I’ve found a compromise (折中方案): I run with only
one earphone in. The music sounds off. It’s an imperfect solution.
An updated pair of headphones, called Aftershocks, aim to do
better. Aftershocks bills itself as using bone-conducting technology to
conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through
your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum (鼓膜) free
to hear everything else.
“earbobs (耳塞式耳机) are typically designed to block out all
sound, which is fine when you are inside. But when you’re outside,
you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with
a blindfold on,” says Rod Anent, managing director of Aftershocks.
Here’s where Aftershocks comes in. The headphones hook over the
back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your
cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds. So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they
didn’t bounce or shift.
What about the downsides? If you’re a huge fan of high-quality
sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend
expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as
you might be distracted by other noises.
Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest
problem is the price. Ranging between £49.96 to £83.29, Aftershocks
headphones aren’t exactly cheap.
With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes.
Aftershocks headphones are quite useful. While jogging out, they
were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer.
8. What is special about Aftershocks headphones?
A. They are a good choice for inside use.
B. They allow users to hear other sounds.
C. They can make music sound more beautiful.
D. They can deliver sound through your eardrum.
9. What does the author’s friend think of Aftershocks headphones?
A. They prevent users getting lost.
B. They deliver high-quality sound.
C. They often get lost while users are running.
D. They fail to allow users to enjoy the music.
10. How does the author think of Aftershocks headphones?
A. They are too expensive. B. They seem quite useless.
C. They make users feel pain. D. They are too complex to use.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To express worries. B. To introduce a product.
C. To share a personal story. D. To complain about a product.
D
A new device (装置) works like a solar panel, except it doesn’t
harvest energy from the sun. It captures energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype (雏形) of the device produced enough electricity at
night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light
rooms or charge phones. It could also power electronics in remote or
low-resource areas that lack electricity. The device makes use of the temperature difference between the
earth and outer space to create electricity. As long as one side of it is
cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The
cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That
plate is closed tightly under a transparent (透明的) cover and
surrounded with insulation (隔热材料) to keep out heat. The bottom
of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate
is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of
degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December
night in Stanford University, California. The generator produced up to
25 kilowatts of power per square meter of the device. That was enough
power to light a small light emitting diode, or a LED bulb. Further
improvements might increase its production to at least 500 mill watts
per square meter. The system might need more insulation around the
cool, top plate to do that.
“The device could also help power remote weather stations or other
environmental devices,” says A swath Raman. He is a material
scientist who works on the device at the University of California, Los
Angeles. “This may be useful in polar regions where people can’t see
sunlight for months,” Raman says. “If you have some low-power
devices and you need to power them through three months of
darkness, this might be a way. ”
12. What does the author mainly talk about the device in Paragraph
3?
A. Its application fields. B. Its important effects.
C. Its working principle. D. Its developing process.
13. How can researchers make the device produce more electricity?
A. By putting more insulation around the top plate.
B. By covering the top plate with a transparent cap.
C. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate.
D. By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.
14. What’s Raman’s attitude towards the new device?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Hopeful.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Differences between a Solar Panel and a New DeviceB. A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
C. A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night
D. Temperature Difference between the Earth and Outer Space

One possible version:
The Value of Books
People often say that gold and silver are very valuable things in the
world. In my opinion, books are more valuable than anything else.
Books are our friends. They introduce us different kinds of
knowledge. And if we feel lonely or unhappy, we always can find
comfort in them.
Books are also our teachers. They teach us truth, science,
literature, and philosophy of life. Besides, they increase our
knowledge, enlarge our experience, strengthen our character and
do many other things which we can’t do without them.
Books tell us what is right and what is wrong. And books can also
tell the good from the bad.
Therefore to read more books is the best policy for our young
students.
