I dont think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean.
Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first
time I went to Half-moon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the
ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef
(大堡礁). There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made
such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australia’s Coral Sea
was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly
important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth.
But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect
them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take
action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to
create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the oceans
species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be
part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the
ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean,
and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.
4. What can we learn about the author from the underlined sentence in Paragraph
1?
A. He seldom went surfing at the sea.
B. He never went back to his hometown.
C. He forgot his experiences about the ocean.
D. He had a wonderful impression of Half-moon Bay.
5. What is Australian marine life like according to Paragraph 2?
A. It may be faced with danger.
B. It depends on reefs for living greatly.
C. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually.
D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
6. What’s the purpose of the Protect Our Coral Sea activity?
A. To contribute to a complete ecosystem.B. To set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
B. To prevent more marine species being endangered.
D. To raise more teenagers environmental awareness.
7. Why do Angus and the author create a little video?
A. To urge people to take action to protect the marine species.
B. To bring back to people their memory of ocean species.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To inspire people to explore the secret of the ocean.

Is war unavoidable? Can war be prevented?
History tells that there were wars, great or small, in every century, in every
decade. Throughout the ages, from the Stone Age to the Atomic Age, men have
been fighting, first with swords and shields, then with guns and cannons, and
now, hydrogen bombs and missiles (导弹) are used for military purpose. But, in
spite of all these, it is still my belief that war can be prevented and peace can be
won, but it requires the effort of every one of us.
I am sure that we would not like to experience another world war. If it ever
happens, two-thirds of the world and much of the civilization which men have gained
through time, patience and effort will be destroyed. Will then the remaining one-third of
the world be able to survive on its own?
Our task now is not to blame the past, but to plan for the future.
If there is peace in the world, men can use their rockets to explore the mystery of
space, their submarines to explore the depth of the sea, their missiles to deliver
mails and their fine equipment to penetrate (穿透) the jungles of Africa, instead of
using them militarily.
Governments can use their money to build more schools, so that more children
can be educated to be useful citizens. Scientists can use atomic energy to propel (推
动) steamships and planes. They can also design new machines to increase the
production of goods and thus improve the way of living of the people.
How can a peaceful world be achieved? It requires, in my opinion, the
understanding and friendship between all people from all nations. Let no one suffer
discrimination by reason of color, race, religion, or national origin. Let the rich
support the poor and the strong help the weak.
We know that neither peace nor such a dream world can come true in a day or a
month. It may even take decades or centuries. But let us plan and begin now.
8. What’s the writers opinion according to Paragraph 2?A. Another world war is unavoidable.
B. It is almost impossible to achieve peace soon.
C. Wars will always exist in the world.
D. Peace can be won if everyone makes effort.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. Wars were not expensive in the past.
B. Wars can promote the development of weapons.
C. Things for military use can be useful for peaceful purpose.
D. As long as there are wars, peoples way of living cannot be improved.
10. What does the author support publicly when talking about peace?
A. Spend more money educating children.
B. Stop military exploration.
C. Call on people to help each other.
D. Act for it right now.
11. What can be the best title of the text?
A. War or Peace—It Depends on Ourselves
B. Understanding and Friendship
C. The Past and the Future
D. To Die or to Survive

In Singapore, buses have been given the green light to find new ways to reduce
emissions (排放) and improve the air quality of their services.
Last month, GWS Living Art, a company specializing in urban green structures
installed (安装) green roofs on 10 public buses. While a bus might not seem like the
typical location for a green roof, the installation could provide environmental and
economic benefits. According to research by Michigan State University, green roofs
are great at reducing polluting emissions, providing space for nature and cooling cities
through the water that evaporates (蒸发) from their leaves and by shading surfaces
that would otherwise absorb heat.
“While the powerful effect of green plants on buildings has been well documented,
much less is known about the effects of them on moving vehicles,” said Tan Chun
Liang, a research fellow at National University of Singapore who advises the “Garden
on the Move” bus campaign. This bus campaign is part of a three-month study to test
whether green plants can help lower the temperature inside the buses and reduce the
amount of fuel needed to power the air-conditioning. Liang hopes the research will
provide a possible solution for cities to fight against global warming and the Urban HeatIsland (UHI) effect—when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than
nearby rural areas, due to the heat produced and absorbed by industry, traffic and
building materials.
To make Singapore a “Garden City”, the government has joined this bus campaign
with other green projects such as the Green Mark Scheme which aims for 80% of
buildings to be green by 2030 and Gardens by the Bay, an eco-friendly garden
featuring solar-powered “super trees” and over 1.5 million plants.
12. Why were green roofs installed on 10 public buses in Singapore?
A. To provide more space for plants to live in.
B. To increase the diversity of species in Singapore.
C. To attract more people to use public transportation.
D. To test green plants environmental and economic benefits.
13. How can green plants lower the temperature in cities?
A. By cleaning the air.
B. By reflecting sunlight.
C. By absorbing greenhouse gases.
D. By providing water and shade.
14. How many projects are mentioned to make Singapore a “Garden City”?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Green Campaigns in Singapore
B. An Eco-Friendly Garden
C. Green Roofs on Buses
D. Impact of the Plants

How can we all get more laughter into our lives? Here is what the experts
suggest:
1 Nancy Aguirre, a teacher in Clifton Park, New York, was once painfully
shy and had a hard time laughing. Then she married a circus clown. “I became
interested in the clowns,” she recalls, “One day I put on a costume and paint my
face. That afternoon my whole life changed. I learned to laugh and enjoy life in a way I
had never done before.” To this day, she still makes it a rule to be with
people who enjoy life and laughing.3 It doesn’t take you too much time and can be easy. Collect favorite cartoons
and jokes. Also, keep a paper for writing down humor you find in everyday life. “Good
ideas come and go fast; you have to capture (捕捉) them quickly or they are
gone,” says Virginia Toper.
Laugh when you need it most. “ 4 ” says comedian Bill Cosby. “And once
you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive
it,” he insists.
Gray Alan, a sociology professor at the University of Minnesota, claims that
laughter is a skill we can all gain—because it comes naturally. 5 Just
remember: we are just here for a period, so get a few laughs.
A. Keep a laughter file.
B. Practice the art of laughing.
C. Mix with people who laugh.
D. He who laughs last laughs best.
E. Peoples joy can affect those around them.
F. You can soften the worst blows through humor.
G. But it’s also something that has to be developed.

One possible version:
Dear Peter,I’m glad to receive your letter. You told me that you’ve made great progress in
learning Chinese. Not only can you speak more Chinese than before, but you’ve been
able to watch some TV programs in Chinese. You have done really well in learning
Chinese.
You say that you have some difficulty reading and writing Chinese. Personally,
you should learn and memorize more Chinese characters and practice writing Chinese
characters as often as possible. Besides, you should choose some simpler articles to
read, which will help you with your Chinese characters.
I hope my advice will help you to deal with your difficulty in reading Chinese. I’m sure
your Chinese reading will improve greatly soon.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
