In 1997,12-year-old American girl Caitlin and 14-year-old Zimbabwean (津巴布韦
人) Martin became pen friends through their schools. They didn’t realize at that time how
their handwritten letters would change their lives.
It all began as a school task. Everyone in Caitlin’s class was supposed to choose a pen
friend from another country. All the other kids picked countries like France or Germany, but
Caitlin chose Zimbabwe because the name sounded exotic(异国的) and cool.
Martin lived with his family in one of Zimbabwe’s worst slums(贫民窟) where they
shared one room with another family. And a bed was their only piece of furniture.
When Caitlin’s first letters reached Martin, they were simple and general. The two kids
wrote about their favorite music and what they liked to do. But as Martin gradually revealed
more about his life and his letters started arriving written on pieces of trash, Caitlin realized
what the living conditions were like for Martin. Without telling her parents, she began
sending money with her letters—$ 20 at a time. While the money was not much to Caitlin, it
meant more food for Martin’s family and enabled him to pay his school fees.
It lasted six years from their first exchange of letters to Martin’s arrival in the United
States. With the help of the money from Caitlin’s parents later on, Martin finished his
university and got his MBA from Duke University.
Today, Caitlin and Martin aren’t only best friends, but they also share their story in a
book called I Will Always Write Back. They want to encourage readers to look beyond their
own lives and do something kind for others, which might greatly influence their lives.

It seems that a cat and a mouse just can’t get along well. Cats always like to catch
mice. When a mouse meets a cat, the mouse will try to run away as fast as possible.
Once upon a time, on a sunny fall afternoon, a young mouse ran around for fun under a
tall tree by himself. He kicked up a small piece of rock. The rock went up to the air then
dropped down hitting a baby cat. The baby cat was only a few weeks old. She looked at the
mouse and said to herself, “He must have lots of power because he could kick up a piece of
rock to hit me.” She felt scared.
It made the young mouse very proud. He told his friends, the other mice, “Everybody
says that a mouse is afraid of a cat, but today a cat was afraid of me.” So the mouse said that
he would not run away any more. His friends explained that it was just an accident. The baby
cat was too young to know a mouse. When the baby cat grew up to become a big cat, it would
be different. So the other mice advised the young mouse that he must still run away when he
saw a cat. But the self-important mouse would not take the advice.
One year later, the baby cat grew up and became a big cat. One day, under the same tall
tree, when the big cat showed up, all the mice ran away except the young mouse. He
remained staying there without moving.

With the COVID-19 epidemic hitting China, many of you might want to know more
about the virus. The disease is caused by a newly-found type of coronavirus (冠状病毒).
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. The word “corona” comes from Latin and refers
to crowns. When people first saw a coronavirus under a microscope (显微镜), they found that
its spikes (刺突) made it look like a crown. That’s how the virus family got its name. Some
coronaviruses cause disease in humans; others spread illness among animals, including
camels, cats and bats.
We have found seven types of coronavirus that can infect(传染) humans so far. Four of
them are common and cause respiratory (呼吸道的) illnesses such as mild flu. Rarely, animal
coronaviruses can evolve (进化) and then spread among people, such as Middle East
respiratory syndrome (MERS,中东呼吸综合症) and SARS(非典). The novel coronavirus
(新型冠状病毒), which was first found in Wuhan, is the seventh one.21. Why was the virus family named coronavirus?
A.Because it didn’t exist before.
B.Because it was found by a Latin scientist.
C.Because coronaviruses have crown-like spikes.
D.Because coronaviruses can only be seen under a microscope.
22.COVID-19 is the seventh coronavirus that _____.
A.has ever been found on Earth
B.can infect humans
C.can spread among animals
D.doesn’t harm wild animals
23.What do we know from the story?
A.It’s easy for animals to spread coronaviruses to humans.
B.Mild flu is the most common illness caused by coronaviruses.
C.All coronaviruses cause respiratory illnesses.
D.MERS was also caused by a type of coronavirus.

On my recent trip to Sydney with my parents, we visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals and birds. Some are native (当地的)
toAustralia and can only be found there. There are over 600 animals there, including
kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles (鳄鱼). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the
Wildlife Park better than a zoo where most of the animals are in cages (笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We were allowed to touch and feed them.
It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very
cuddly (令人想拥抱的). Although we were not allowed to carry them, I got to take a photo
with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念品) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them
arereally big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) they had. I
saw an old parrot which could “talk”. It made a great impression on me.
I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.

Taking online classes is becoming increasingly popular. Do students like this way of
studying? Different students have different opinions about it.
I love taking online classes. They give me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to
learn whatever we want. Also, we are able to study online whenever and wherever we want,
which is very convenient.
Lin Tao
I didn't think taking online classes was a good way to study in the beginning. The whole
learning process was not as organized as it was in the classroom.
I even had a hard time planning my daily activities. Then I found planning ahead and creating
a study schedule were very important. So I made a plan for my everyday study, and it helped me
Zhang Yu learn better online.
Online class is helpful. We might feel more focused on learning when we are alone in front of
a computer. What's more, taking online classes also means we can have more time to use a
computer, so we can practice our computer skills in this way.
Yuan Ming
I think the idea of taking online classes is crazy. We have to spend more time on computers

fun. However, this New Year's Eve, we could not have any friends over. Instead, we watched
