Smile Train is a charity (慈善团体) that helps the millions of children around the
world, who suffer from a facial defect (缺陷). The defect happens when a baby’s top lip or
mouth doesn’t form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these
babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with
it, new hope and a new beginning.
Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their
families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often
abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the
operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and
costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to
perform the operations.
A Smile Train doctor from the UK said, “Each child who has the operation is given a
second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and
be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train.
Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising. One newborn baby girl was found
abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted (收养) by a passenger. This
lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation
and gave hope to the family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors.
In this way we make sure that these operations will always be available.”

Smile Train is a charity (慈善团
体) that helps the millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect (缺
..The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with it,
new hope and a new beginning.
In some countries, children with this defect are
often abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the
operations.
经常在出生时就被遗弃。given up放弃;dressed up盛装打扮;called up打电话;
Each child who has the operation is
given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to
school and be happy…I did the operation and gave hope to the family可知,他通过微笑列

When it comes to shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on
what fits me well. To me, if it zips, it fits. My mom, however, usually tells me I need a
bigger size.
When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it
impossible. When mom told me something didn’t suit me, or I needed a bigger size, all I
heard was that my body was wrong.
To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together. This continued until I got
engaged(订婚) last year and needed to buy some clothes. When I tried on a blouse, my
mother looked at me, and I knew what was coming. “You need a bigger size,” she said.
There was no bigger size. I tried to hold back my tears(眼泪). Maybe I could buy it
alone, of course, but my mom is my favorite person to hang out with. The idea of looking for
a wedding dress without her seemed just as scary as taking her with me.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom’s eyes.
“You look beautiful!” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more.
This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother
didn’t say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. In that moment, all the arguments in
the past ended. We didn’t buy a dress that day. We decided to see more.
A few weeks later, we found the perfect dress. We both loved it as soon as I put it on.
And during those few weeks, mom and I also found the perfect fit for our shopping
relationship.
5.What does the writer want to show in the first two paragraphs?
A.She likes the clothes with zippers while her mother doesn’t agree with her.
B.In mom’s opinion, her body is wrong and she is too fat to wear what she likes.
C.She really wants to dress like her friends, but her mom doesn’t allow her to do so.
D.She and mom always disagree on what clothes fit her because of wrong understanding.
6.How did the writer probably feel after she tried on the simple white dress?
A.Funny and surprised. B.Shocked and sorry.
C.Proud and moved. D.Excited and scary.
7.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mainly mean?
A.I couldn’t shop for a wedding dress myself because my mom disagreed.
B.I felt kind of scary when I went shopping with my mother for a wedding dress.
C.I felt like shopping for a wedding dress with mom though she thought it was scary.D.I wanted to shop for a wedding dress alone but I couldn’t stand shopping without mom.
8.Which is the besl word to describe the perfect fit for their shopping relationship?
A.Missing. B.Embarrassing, C.Understanding. D.Encouraging.
9.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Praising makes the perfect fit for their shopping relationship.
B.Tears sure the best way to end arguments between family members.
C.Love is everything in good communication between family members.
D.Better communication requires not only love but also a more suitable way.

When it comes to shopping for
clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits me well.
As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my
mom’s eyes. “You look beautiful!” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more.
This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my
mother didn’t say that.
The idea of looking for a wedding dress without
her seemed just as scary as taking her with me.

When we look at animals, we know that they are not humans. But how do our closest
friends dogs see us? Do they know that we are humans? Or do they actually think that we are
just strange- looking dogs?
You may be surprised to know that many kinds of animals do not notice such differences
very much at all. For example, the cuckoo (布谷鸟) lays its eggs in the nest of another bird.
These birds will feed the baby cuckoos, even though they look nothing like their real babies.
This is because the birds feed in an instinctive (本能的) ways.
Other animals, it seems, will simply separate the world into animals they eat, and
animals that eat them. When it comes to dogs, though, there is no simple answer to this
question.
Sheepdogs leave their mothers when they are born. They grow up with sheep, and come
to see them as their family. For this reason, they never attack the sheep, and help protect
them, they probably think the sheep are dogs too, but we can’t be certain.
Similarly, if you keep a dog from birth, the way it sees the world will be different to a
dog that grows up with other dogs. It will probably think it is the same kind of animal as you.
This can even be true of humans. A Russian boy called Ivan Mishukov, born in 1998, was
raised by dogs for two years and came to believe that he was a dog himself.
14.What can we know in Paragraph 2?
A.The cuckoo is a stupid bird.
B.Birds are different from other animals.
C.It’s natural for birds to feed other birds’ baby.
D.Birds can’t find any differences among themselves.15.What do some animals usually see other animals as?
A.Food or enemies. B.Friends or enemies.
C.Neighbors and relatives. D.Friends and neighbors.
16.Why do sheepdogs protect the sheep?
A.They are afraid of being punished. B.They regard the sheep as their family.
C.They think of the sheep as their owners. D.They think sheep are a kind of dogs.
17.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Dogs can give humans a lot of help.
B.Different dogs see the world similarly.
C.People should see the world from a dog’s view.
D.Environment influences how a person sees himself.
18.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Dogs see other animals as dogs too.
B.The cuckoo prefers feeding other animals’ babies.
C.Animals don’t know they are different from others.
D.Dogs raised by humans may regard themselves as humans.

A young man came across a spring of delicious water while wandering in the desert.
The water was very sweet. He filled his leather canteen (皮革水壶)so he could bring some
back to an old man in his village who had been his teacher.
After a four-day journey, he gave the water to the old man. The old man took a deep
drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student for the sweet water. The young man returned to

ourselves and teach our children about the beauty of expressing gratitude. After all, gifts from
the heart are really gifts of the heart.

Why do many Chinese people refuse to cut their hair during the first month of the
lunar year?
This is because people believe that getting a haircut during the first lunar month is not a
good idea. Tradition says that doing so will cause your mother's brothers to die. Although it's
not true, some people still believe it.
So, after a month's wait, people usually flock to cut their hair on Dragon Head-Raising
Day —the second day of the second lunar month. It was once tradition to line up outside of
barber shops on this day.
Dragon Head-Raising Day falls on Feb 24 this year. It is an important traditional
Chinese holiday. Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall would increase because
the rain-bringing Dragon King would wake up from his winter sleep. So that day is the start
of spring and farming.
A well-known phrase (俗语) goes, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon
lifts his head.” Besides cutting their hair, there are also other ways to celebrate this holiday.
For example, people eat food with “dragon names". People call noodles dragon's beard .
Dumplings are dragon's ears and spring rolls (春卷) are dragon's scales (龙鳞).
