D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement into an “underground cat city” by volunteering to care for about 150 homeless cats. He started in 2016 when he felt lonely after moving to the city. In search of companionship, he reached out to a local animal rescue center and began helping with the homeless cats. “Spending time with these cats makes me feel better,” Yin said. The cats have become his daily comfort. Every morning at around 7 am, Yin arrives at the cat shelter. He replaces the water, refills the food bowls, and checks the air purifier before heading to his university classes. When Yin first joined, the cat shelter’s conditions were poor. Fortunately, in 2017 a photographer took pictures of the cat shelter, and posted them online, attracting public attention and donations. With those funds, the shelter was upgraded and life level for the cats improved. As more people donated, Yin formed a donor group that has grown to 107 members. “Cat supplies are no longer scarce; what we need most is people,” Yin noted. Currently, only three long-term volunteers (including Yin) care for the cats, and he worries about the future. He knows that soon he may not be able to devote as much time as before, so he hopes more volunteers will join to help keep the cats safe and healthy. Despite his hard work, Yin remains modest (谦虚的). “I didn’t really do anything,” he emphasized, explaining that it’s the cats that brought him a sense of peace. In the end, Yin’s greatest wish is to see this “underground cat city” disappear one day — when all the homeless cats find loving homes above ground. 4. Why did Yin volunteer to help homeless cats? A. He felt lonely in a new city. B. He needed data for his research. C. He was asked by a rescue center. D. He dreamed of opening a pet shelter. 5. What happened to the cat shelter after its pictures went online? A. It was supported by the government. B. It stopped taking new homeless cats in. C. It got money and was greatly improved. D. Most of its cats were adopted immediately. 6. What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Free. B. Lacking. C. Achievable. D. High-quality.7. Which of the following best describes Yin? A. Selfless and caring. B. Humorous and creative. C. Independent and brave. D. Strict and hardworking. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“He started in 2016 when he felt lonely after moving to the city. In search of companionship, he reached out to a local animal rescue center and began helping with the homeless cats. 故选A项。 根据第二段中“Fortunately, in 2017 a photographer took pictures of the cat shelter, and posted them online, attracting public attention and donations. With those funds, the shelter was upgraded and life level for the cats improved. 根据第三段中“As more people donated, Yin formed a donor group that has grown to 107 members. D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement into an “underground cat city” by volunteering to care for about 150 homeless cats. 以及第三段中“Currently, only three long-term volunteers (including Yin) care for the cats, and he worries about the future. He knows that soon he may not be able to devote as much time as before, so he hopes more volunteers will join to help keep the cats safe and healthy. 故选A项。 C There are small animals living in the seafloor mud (淤泥) that scientists believe play an important role in slowing down the influences of climate change. Earlier this month, scientists spent several days on the Saguenay Fjord’s waters, collecting samples (样本) from 200 metres below to try to track the life in the mud. Collecting the 60 seafloor samples was very difficult because of the Saguenay Fjord’s depth, waves and water movement. The scientists needed to get the samples off the Saguenay Fjord’s ground, and considering that the Saguenay is 200 metres deep, that’s quite a great achievement. From the boat, the scientists used a special tool to get samples. After they were pulled from the fjord’s bottom, the samples were transported to a special place in Chicoutimi, Que. for study and experiment. They put a special sand on top of the mud in order to track the digging movements of the animals, some of which were too small to spot with the naked eye. What appeared from the mud was a small world, being full of life. While the animals were small, the scientists found that they can help keep the seafloor healthy and finally support the whole sea ecosystem. The way that the small animals move the sediment (沉淀物) changes the entire structure of the ecosystem. These small animals also help store carbon in the seafloor by eating or catching the matter that falls from above — a role that the scientists say could be important to slow down the influence of global warming. The scientists described the floor of seas as “one of the largest carbon stores on Earth”, holding more carbon than the rainforests. 8. Where do the small animals mentioned in the text mainly live? A. On the surface of the sea. B. Along the banks of the Saguenay Fjord. C. In the mud of the seafloor. D. In the open water above the Saguenay Fjord. 9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The design of the sampling tool. B. The difficulties of collecting samples. C. The depth of the Saguenay Fjord. D. The achievements of the research team. 10. Which one best describes small animals’ role in sea ecosystems? A. Mud builders. B. Small soldiers. C. Sea cleaners. D. Tiny protectors. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Scientists can now put an end to climate change. B. More carbon in the sea is quickly lost into the air. C. The seabed keeps less carbon than the rainforests.D. Climate change may be worse without these animals. C 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第一段中“There are small animals living in the seafloor mud (淤泥) that scientists believe play an important role in slowing down the influences of climate change. 根据第二段中“Collecting the 60 seafloor samples was very difficult because of the Saguenay Fjord’s depth, waves and water movement. 根据第四段中“While the animals were small, the scientists found that they can help keep the seafloor healthy and finally support the whole sea ecosystem. 和第五段中“These small animals also help store carbon in the seafloor by eating or catching the matter that falls from above — a role that the scientists say could be important to slow down the influence of global warming. 根据最后一段中“These small animals also help store carbon in the seafloor by eating or catching the matter that falls from above — a role that the scientists say could be important to slow down the influence of global warming. The scientists described the floor of seas as “one of the largest carbon stores on Earth”, holding more carbon than the rainforests. DA new study found that volunteer dog-handler teams — made up of everyday people and their pets — can find and recognize the hard-to-find eggs of the spotted lanternfly (斑衣蜡蝉), an insect (昆虫) that’s being bad for farms and forests across the eastern and central US. The spotted lanternfly was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, it’s spread quickly to 18 states, laying its eggs on trees, stones, and even cars, where it can get a ride to a new home. “They often look like the outer covering of mud, dry leaves, cracks, or other things’ undersides,” said Mizuho Nita, a plant specialist. “Finding them is like searching for a needle in the ocean.” With a sense of smell that’s tens of thousands of times more sensitive than humans, dogs can be trained to find spotted lanternfly eggs. Research showed that professional dogs can do this with accurate information. But professional dogs are expensive, and there aren’t nearly enough of them to cover the growing danger. So the researchers advised the tens of thousands of dog owners already doing scent detection (气味探测) as a hobby to find hidden scents for fun in homes, parks, and training classes. And over 1,000 dog owners took part in the study. The results? Dogs correctly identified the spotted lanternfly eggs 82 percent of the time in the controlled tests. In the real-world fields, accuracy dropped to 61 percent — still better than many human searches. “Anytime you can practise with your dog, which is good for them,” said Wellborn, one of the researchers. “Dog owners obviously enjoy it. And it’s a way they can take dog skills and training to help their community.” Finding the spotted lanternfly eggs may be just the beginning. Another study found that trained pet dogs could also detect powdery mildew, a major disease of grapes, with over 90 percent accuracy. Together, these studies point to a growing role for dogs and their owners in safeguarding agriculture. 12. Why is it difficult to find the spotted lanternfly eggs? A. They are micro-dust size. B. They can change their own color every day. C. They are laid underground. D. They can make themselves look like others. 13. What is the challenge of using professional dogs to do scent detection? A. The influence. B. The safety. C. The cost. D. The skill. 14. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. The dogs’ happiness. B. The dogs’ egg-hunt task. C. The dogs’ adventure. D. The dogs’ hunting ability. 15. What is the author’s attitude toward using dogs in agriculture? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disappointed. D. Unclear. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“They often look like the outer covering of mud, dry leaves, cracks, or other things’ undersides,” said Mizuho Nita, a plant specialist. “Finding them is like searching for a needle in the ocean.” 根据第三段中“But professional dogs are expensive, and there aren’t nearly enough of them to cover the growing danger. He loved drawing more than anything else, spending every free moment filling the pages of his old, worn-out sketchbook (素描本) with the wildest imagination. Yet, he kept this hobby a secret, believing his drawings were merely silly doodles (胡写乱画) unworthy of anyone’s attention. One afternoon, as late autumn light streamed through the classroom windows, Leo remained at his desk, completely absorbed in sketching a magical castle (城堡) with very tall towers and secret paths inside. So focused was he that he didn’t notice e his English teacher, Mr. Collins, coming until the man was leaning over his shoulder. “Leo, that’s unbelievable!” Mr. Collins exclaimed, his voice full of real admiration. Surprised, Leo closed the sketchbook quickly, his cheeks reddened with embarrassment. “Oh, no, it’s nothing, Mr. Collins. Just some stupid drawings,” he mumbled, holding the book tightly to his chest. But Mr. Collins’s eyes were kind and sincere. “It’s not nothing,” he said gently. “I’m serious. The detail is amazing — the texture (纹理) of the stones, the sense of size. Have you ever thought of joining the Art Club? We’re preparing for the School Culture Festival and really need someone with your imagination.” Leo looked down, his heart beating fast. He promised to talk to the art teacher and even suggested they work together on a large mural for the festival. Seeing the genuine belief in his teacher’s eyes, a spark of confidence ignited in Leo’s heart. He finally nodded, “Okay, I’ll give it a try.” Paragraph 2: Two months later, the School Culture Festival was full of life. In the center of the hall stood a magnificent fantasy castle mural, created by Leo and the Art Club. Leo, now wearing a confident smile, was surrounded by classmates and teachers praising his work.
