You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was
injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go
ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit
a soft ball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realised running
was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against
my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and
nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start
I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course
walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was hungry!
As I got close to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm
clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same me dal as the
one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a
“marathon winner”.
24. A month before the marathon, the author __________.
A. lost hope B. felt scared C. was well trained D. made up his mind to run
25. Why did the author mention the PE class in his 7th year?
A. To express the support of his teacher.
B. To show he was not good at sports.
C. To amuse the readers with a funny story.
D. To share a precious memory.
26. How was the author’s first marathon?
A. He made it. B. He quitted halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. One is never too old to learn.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
D. A man owes his success to his family support.
C
Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back
on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without
them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all
students in schools.Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were
better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that
students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking
part in music education.
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a students sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens
today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship
troubles, and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the
Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes
were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent
performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries. Music allows students from different
countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet with an
American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally, they were able to read the music in order to
play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose
through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is
losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
28. What can we learn about education with music classes?
A. It allows schools to make more profits.
B. It leads to a lot of emotional problems easily.
.
C It helps students to improve their schoolwork.
D. It has a great influence on the culture of the country.
29. What do the two studies seem to show?
A. Not all students take part in music lessons.
B. Students with great success like to attend music lessons.
C. Music plays an important role in students’ success.
D. Students having music classes are better in all lessons.
30. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ________.
.
A different cultures have different styles of music
B. music makes cross-country communication possible
C. Japan has a good international relationship with AmericaD. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Music Back B. Music Education in Schools
C. Music—a Bridge to Understanding D. The Importance of Listening to Music

“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-
mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal (字面意思的) translation of the Chinese greeting with ruined English
grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to
believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did research on Google. com. To my surprise, there are
over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in e-mails, letters,
newspapers, movies, books, or other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that
Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the
grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s
movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named
“Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting (引用)
Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his trademark... Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a
popular phrase in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together,
and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic group (少数民族) in
the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced
in the mixed pot.
You can have some other examples besides adoption from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from
Japanese, and dejà vufrom French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from
others. They will also modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut
butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since
Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become
American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness and flavor.
32. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?
A. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. “Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
33. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. American changing cultures.
B. Culture mixture.
C. A kind of cooked dish.
D. Confucius’s words.
34. According to the passage, what can be inferred?
A. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made “Long time no see.” popular.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
B. You’ll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
