Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because 第4页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals. When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time. Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick. Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it — that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously unknown. Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”. Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”. Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms. 4. According to Paragraph 1, which is right about idioms? A. Expressions which are based on animals. B. Expressions with rich cultural background. C. Expressions that always make sense. D. Expressions which are easy to understand. 5. What can “monkeying around” be used to describe? A. Children jump around and waste time. B. Children do something useful and serious. C. Children play with monkeys with their parents. D. Children spend time playing with their family pets. 6. What can be learned from the text? A. Dogs and cats always get along nicely. B. Bugs can be used to show your annoyance. C. Americans believe cats can give away secrets. D. Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man. 7. How does the text mainly develop? A. By sharing experiences. 第5页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司B. By making comparisons. C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures. 【答案】4. B 5. A 6. B 7. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。介绍了英语习语的特点并列举了一些与动物相关的习语。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段第三句“Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. (即使你知道每个单词的意思,你也可能不理解这个 习语,因为你不了解它背后的文化。)”可知,习语有它背后的文化。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time. (当孩子们跳来跳去做傻事时,他们的父母可能会告诉他们不要“胡闹”。“胡闹”的意思是做一些 没用或不严肃的事情,或者只是浪费时间。)”可知,“monkeying around”用来描述跳来跳去,浪费时间 的孩子。故选A。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段最后两句“If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”. C。 C Just being intelligent (聪明的) doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other scientists, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When 第6页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it. She calls it her “grit scale (量表).” In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that git increases with education. People who finished college scored higher on the grit scale than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher. She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which measure IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work. But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Crede, a professor at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently pooled the results of 88studies on grit. Together, those studies tested nearly 67, 000 people. And grit did not predict success, Crede found. However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. “Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.” 8. What can we know from the first two paragraphs? A. Intelligence determines success. B. Not all smart people will succeed. C. Duckworth redesigned a grit scale. D. Grit decides how intelligent one might be. 9. What might influence a person’s grit according to Angela Duckworth’s findings? A. Lifestyle. B. Family. C. Personality D. Education. 10. What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Comment. B. Disagree. C. Recognize. D. Warn. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Grit can hardly be taught. B. Grit can be improved eastly C. Grit is strongly related to test anxiety. D. Grit has nothing to do with school grades. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。只是聪明并不意味着有人会成功。不能因为一个人不够聪明就认为他会失败。 第7页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司作者讨论了智商和毅力对成功的影响。通过对大量研究的综合分析,作者认为聪明并不意味着成功,也并 不意味着相对不聪明的人会失败,但成功的关键因素之一是毅力。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful, And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail.(聪明并不意味着一定会成功,不聪明也不意味着 一定会失败。)”和第二段中的“When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. (深入研究后,Duckworth发现,表现最好的人拥有一种与聪明无 关的品质。)”可知,聪明并不完全意味着一个人就会成功,不那么聪明的人也并不一定会失败,表现最好 的人拥有一种与智商无关的品质,由此可推知,不是所有聪明人都能成功。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“She also found that grit increases with education. People who finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.(她还发现,毅力随着教育程度的提高而增加。在毅力测试中,大学毕业的人比毕 业前辍学的人得分更高。大学毕业后去读研的人得分更高。)”可知,Angela Duckworth认为教育程度可以 影响一个人的毅力。故选D。 【10题详解】 词义猜测题。根据上文的“So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. (因此,她将测试智商的大学 入学考试的分数与学校成绩和某人在毅力测试中的分数进行了比较。成绩越高的学生更有毅力)”可知, Duckworth认为毅力和成功有很大关系。结合划线词所在句子中的but可知,该句陈述的观点与上文相反, 即一些人反对毅力意味着成功这个观点。由此猜测划线词意为“反对”,与Disagree(不同意)同义。故选 B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中““Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”(“学习习惯和技能、考试焦虑和出勤率 与学校成绩的关系要比毅力密切得多,”Crede说,“我们可以教学生如何学好。我们可以帮助他们缓解 考试焦虑,”他补充道。“我不确定我们是否能在毅力上做到这一点。”)”可推知,Crede认为学习习惯 和技能、考试焦虑和出勤率与学校成绩的关系要比毅力密切得多,他不确定能否教会学生有毅力,这说明 教会学生有毅力是很难的,由此可推知,毅力几乎不能被教会。故选A。 第8页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司【点睛】 D Housing officials say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack the will, and the skill, to deal with ordinary conflicts (冲突). “We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.” And as any pop psychologist (心理学家) will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent discontent (不满) that can boil over into frustration and anger. At the University of Florida, emotional conflicts occur about once a week, the university’s director of housing education says, “Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person- to- person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is most dramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college. Administrators (管理人员) guess that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text? “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, therefore creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, students said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor. Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even small conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus. . 12 What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts? A. Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems. B. Students are not satisfied with each other. C. Housing directors are not responsible for them. D. Students are not strong- willed. 13. What do we learn from the second paragraph? A. Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction. B. Students in Florida sit down and have a person- to- person talk once a week. C. Not all students are able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate. D. The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased in the past five years. 第9页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司14. What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates reveal their conflicts in the media? A. Opposing. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Unclear. 15. What should parents do according to the passage? A. They should be involved in their children’s life on campus. B. They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives. C. They should constantly contact the administrators of the college. D. They should teach their children the skills to deal with the conflicts. 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了学生处理冲突的能力下降及其原因。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.(我们的许多冲突都是因为孩子们不知道如何通过正式的讨论来解决问题。)”可知,很多 冲突发生是因为孩子们不知道如何讨论解决问题,由此可知,很多室友冲突发生的主要原因是学生不善于 就问题达成一致。故选A项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The problem is most dramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.(这个问题在大一新生中最为突出;住房管理专业人士表示, 他们会看到随着学生接近毕业情况有所改善,但有些学生似乎永远不会进步,他们担心这些学生在毕业后 将如何处理冲突。)”可知,宿舍室友之间的冲突会随着毕业情况有所改善,但有些人从未改善过,由此可 知,并不是所有的学生在毕业时都能处理好矛盾。故选C项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的““Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, therefore creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.”(“有些事情会被发布在Facebook的个人主页上,比如:‘哦,我的室友整晚都在学 习,影响我休息,’”加州大学洛杉矶分校的副主任Dana Pysz说,“这是一种彼此之间表达冲突的不同 方式,因此当抱怨公开化时,就会产生更多的冲突。”)”可知,Dana Pysz认为将冲突发布到Facebook上 会产生更多的冲突,由此可知,Dana Pysz对将冲突发布到媒体上持反对态度。故选A项。 【15题详解】 第10页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司推理判断题。根据最后一段“Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even small conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.(管理人员指出,有些家长在孩子的整个生活中都为他们解决了问题。现在孩子 上了大学,却连处理一些小冲突的能力都没有。一些家长甚至继续在校内进行干预。)”可知,由于家长的 过渡干预导致孩子们自己解决冲突的能力缺失,可以推断出文章建议父母应该教会孩子处理冲突的技能而 不是一直为他们解决问题。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you have a big test coming up or just want to do well in class, studying is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade.
