1. Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch
with the person later. Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say
“If you’d like I can email it to you.” This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear
about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.
2. Eat alone in public
You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit: you are much easier to
approach when you are alone. People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation
with someone else. Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious). Plus, having an
interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it.
3. Join a class, sports team, or club
Yoga, salsa dancing, volleyball, Toastmasters (a public speaking club), a class for work, etc. Take up a new
hobby or continue an old one!
These are all great places to meet new people, primarily because you will be forced to see the same people
over and over again in the class. You will automatically make friends with them if you have a common interest and
are forced to see each other again.
Tips:
*In the beginning, never turn down an invitation from someone, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally
do.
*Email your new friends with fun things to do instead of always asking what their plans are. If they have a
better plan you can drop yours and join them. This will help establish you as someone who is contributing value
instead of just taking it (people want this in a friend).
*Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person. People don’t want to be around someone like
that!
19. When having meals, you’d better ________ if you want to make new friends.
A. approach others to show conscious friendliness
第4页/共12页

C. invite others to your apartment to eat together

A. It helps you find out people who share a common interest with you.
B. It helps you find out your interest and take up a new hobby.
C. It offers an opportunity to meet the same people repeatedly.
D. It is a good way to meet new people and make friends in a new city.
21. Which of the following pieces of advice is a tip from the text?
A. Try to be outgoing and talkative instead of being shy.
B. Never turn down an invitation from your friends.
C. Offer suggestions on how to spend time together.
D. Always give a positive response to any request.
22. By writing the text, the author intends to tell us ________.
A. why you should change when you move to a new city

Some parts of the garden are for the rest of the world to admire. Others are for you to disappear to when you
don't want to be found. Of course, that's easy enough to arrange when you have lots of land with space for the kids
to run round and cosy "garden rooms" for the adults to enjoy. But when your garden is on the small side, you might
think it's a tall order. Well, you're wrong.
To create a secret garden, people tend to take the routine: surrounding a small garden with high fences and
then placing a lawn(草坪) in the middle and borders round the edge. Far from making the most of the area, that
just makes it look a lot smaller and more boring. Dividing it up makes much more use of your space and means you
can have your practical family area plus a secret garden.
When you're searching for the perfect secret site within your existing set-up, consider your present favourite
spot. A secret garden needs to be special—a complete contrast to the more practical family parts of the garden.
Perhaps you take a folding chair down to a quiet corner that gets evening sun; maybe you sit and watch the pond or
simply slip out to the patio(露台)with a glass of wine.
第5页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司It's quite easy to change an existing favourite feature into a secret place. You could top the patio with a
pergola(棚架) pole and plant a grapevine for shade, or position a bench overlooking the pond and plant bamboos to
screen it from the rest of the garden.
The areas you create needn't all to be the same size—or even the same style—but if you're planning a major
redesign, take your time and work it out on paper before committing time and money. Then when it's done, you'll
really be able to relax and enjoy it.
23. What assumption lies behind this passage?
A. Grapevine are widely used as shade in gardens.
B. Parents need their own space in the garden.
C. Family members should share everything.
D. Gardens are different in size and style.
24. The underlined phrase "a tall order" (in Paragraph 1) probably means ________.
A. a difficult task B. a costly decision
C. an unwise attempt D. an unfair business
25. What's the author's solution for a cozy space in a small garden?
A. Place a lawn in the middle.
.
B Build borders around the lawn.
C. Surround the garden with high fences.
D. Have a separate space within the garden.
26. What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To offer tips on a small getaway in the garden.
B. To share personal experience in gardening.
C. To recommend best plants for small gardens.
D. To advertise some new designs of gardens.

As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. They don’t
have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn’t work or where to go for help.
We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the
same movies and news and music, is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement
homes and they aren’t always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and

学科网(北京)股份有限公司family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was
born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3. She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53, when she
got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn’t call her on the
phone, so they insisted she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it. There’s been a very
interesting change in communication styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are
now in their teens and aren’t willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don’t make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call
they often stop for a while. They don’t know what to say, and there’s this silence. On the other hand, texting is
considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted(分心的). It’s not considered
rude. But it is considered strange if you’re in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.
.
27 We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________.
A. company manager
B. program designer
C. college professor
D. mobile phone designer
28. What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage?
A. Interesting. B. Amazing.
C. Boring. D. Common.
29. Why do teens like to send texts to communicate with others?
A. To save money.
B. To maintain friendship.
C. To avoid embarrassment.
D. To make communication much easier.
30. What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet?
A. They don’t know how to use some applications.
B. They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C. There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D. They have no friends to communicate with online.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司Travel Tips for New Zealand
If you’re looking for some adventure in one of the amazing countries on Earth, then New Zealand is a must!
____31____! But there are a few things you should know before you head over to it.
1. Bring every kind of clothing you own
That might be a bit surprising, but we have some crazy weather here. From snow in Southland, to windy
Wellington, to Auckland, you may experience four seasons in one day! You’d be forgiven for thinking that you
could just bring your hot weather clothes if you’re here in the “summer months”. ____32____.
2. New Zealand beaches are amazing, but dangerous
New Zealand has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it’s not uncommon to have a whole
beach for yourself. Sadly though, I’ve seen countless tourists on the news who have underestimated (低估) our
beaches and ended up having to be rescued, or worse. Though a lot of the beaches are popular destinations, make
sure you read the signs or ask a local to make sure it’s safe. ____33____ You’ll soon find out that the sun in New
Zealand might not be as hot, but you’ll burn a lot faster than anywhere else.
3. ____34____
Sure, there are plenty of tours that you can go on to see different parts of the country, but by hiring your own
car, you’ll have the freedom of the open road. ____35____. So, getting around is much easier with your own car
and you’ll be able to come and go as you please. Don’t forget to drive on the LEFT side of the road down here!
A. It really is a country like no other
B. Also remember to apply sunscreen (防晒霜)
C. You will need a car to get around
D. You will come back to New Zealand for more
E. New Zealand’s public transport is not good enough
F. But summer often doesn’t truly kick in until mid-late January, and even then it’s touch-and-go
G. If you go for a bush walk in New Zealand, your biggest danger is slipping on some rocks or getting lost
