Volcanic ash from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull made Europe’s airports shut down for nearly a
week, leaving thousands of passengers stranded (滞留) across the globe. Among them was
Agnes’s mother, Sophia Atila Kafu, who was stuck at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, nearly
4,000 miles away from Agnes, who was in Canada, waiting for her mother to attend her
graduation ceremony. This would hardly be notable were it not for the fact that Sophia was 64, had never been
outside Kenya, had never been on a plane, had never been inside an airport, spoke only Swahili
(斯瓦希里语), carried only 25 euros and didn’t have a working mobile.
By the time Agnes realized something was wrong, Sophia had already been stranded at
Schiphol for 19 hours. She had some emergency contact details with her but, so far, no call had
been made or received.
Realizing that her mother was unable to seek help, Agnes called the airline, KLM (荷兰航
空), to ask if they could search for her. The airline told her that there was too much chaos in the
airport and that they would not be able to locate one particular person.
Unable to rest, Agnes contacted her friends and her colleagues for help. Soon, there were
people from Boston, Toronto, New York and San Francisco working on a solution. By now,
Sophia had been stranded for nearly 40 hours.
One of Agnes’s friends sent an email to her contacts titled “Urgently need your networking
help!” It begged, “Do you know anyone who’s stranded in Amsterdam, or know anyone whose
Facebook friends or Twitter followers might be there?”
This email spread quickly among friends of friends. Within two hours, the email went into
the inbox of George Bougias, the manager of Delta Airlines (a KLM partner). George happened to
know Swahili. A few minutes later, George was on his way to the airport. He and six security
agents began to comb the airport.

12.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One evening in my fourth year of a Ph. D., an unexpected call came from Avadhoot’s
mother “He’s missing, ” she said shakily. After an argument with his father, he left home. We’d
been friends since primary school, and though I was now in a different city, we still met when I
visited home. Suddenly, my Ph. D. troubles like endless lab hours, failed experiments, and
publication stress seemed insignificant. I was extremely worried. How could he, always so calm
and a good listener to my complaints, reach this point?
The Ph. D. journey had been difficult. Experiments progressed slowly, and the competitive
atmosphere made me doubt myself. This stress came into my personal life. I became self-centered,
consumed by my own challenges. When friends and colleagues told me about their problems, I
listened but rarely paid real attention. However, I was lucky to have a friend like Avadhoot.
During breaks at home, we walked and talked about traffic and train trips. Gradually, our
conversations focused on my Ph. D. problems. I expressed the unfairness of academia. But he
rarely talked about his plans. Instead he listened patiently and always encouraged me to push
through, reminding me that the journey was just as important as the destination. When asked about
his life, he would say simply, “It’s not too bad. ” I admired his quiet strength and sometimes
envied what I saw as his relatively simple life.
Then came the call. Days later, he was sound and safe. I learned the truth. Growing up,
Avadhoot had faced huge academic pressure from his father. While trying to complete his master’s
degree, he had many mental breakdowns and couldn’t finish, instead taking a job at a call center
— all without telling his family. When his father finally found out, he felt disappointed and told
Avadhoot to leave home immediately. In anger, Avadhoot left and found work at a nearby port as a
daily wage laborer. A coworker got him reunited with his family and reconciled (使和解) his
father.
I felt guilty. His apparent strength hid a heavy load, and I had been so focused on my own
struggles that I had failed to notice or inquire more deeply.注意:

Near midnight, they noticed a figure wrapped in a blanket outside the airport. They walked
over and lifted the blanket. Underneath was a woman in her 60s. “Mama Sophia?” asked George.
Then, in Swahili: “We’ve been sent here by your daughter.” Sophia nodded and smiled. Shaken
but relieved, she explained that another African woman, who spoke English, had taken care of her.
They had tried to call Agnes but hadn’t been able to reach her number. To the relief of everyone,
Mama Sophia was finally found.
Four days later, Sophia arrived in Canada in time for Agnes’s graduation ceremony. A
worrying event finally came to a good end. Agnes was grateful that so many people had helped her
and was in awe of the power of the Internet. Surprisingly, the experience left Sophia more positive
about flying. Troublesome as it was, the kindness of strangers taught her an important lesson.
“You might have a problem,” she said. “But as long as other people know it, it’s not only yours
anymore.”

12.范文
This experience changed the way I interact with friends and colleagues. Our challenges
may all be different, but they are all real and important — if only we can truly listen. One of my
grad school colleagues told me about a conflict with his principal investigator, for example. In the
past I might have brushed off his concerns, too absorbed in my own work to pay attention. But I
had learned a better way: I put my troubles aside, offered my genuine support, and suggested he
should turn to his thesis committee members, who ultimately helped him handle the situation.
Now, as a postdoc (博士后) , I carry these lessons with me and make a conscious effort to
listen carefully. In this new phase of my career, I have become more adapted to the emotions and
needs of those around me. I no longer let my own concern prevent me from being a true friend and
colleague. Through attentive listening, I have been able to offer comfort, advice, and a shoulder to
lean on. It has taught me that in a world full of individual struggles, our ability to listen and
empathize is not just a virtue but a powerful force that can heal, connect, and ultimately make the
journey of life a little less difficult for everyone.
