起出现频率较高的词语,如“动词+名词”“形容词+名词”take sth. for granted,a heavy smog 等;
If I were you,I would...;(4)句子框架和引语:形式和功能半固定或固定的词
Secondly... Finally...
(one’s)heart in(one’s)mouth”“scared to death”“One’s heart stood still.”“A flood /wave of fear welled up in
sb./swept sb.”
When I was eleven years old, I had a big accident. I get scared even now when I think about that time. I went s
kating near my house. There were many people, and I saw some of them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate.
I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn't learn much. H
e left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down . I envied the other people because they could skate w
ell.I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold
and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped t
here, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from unde
r the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled
me up. So, I lived and I'm still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of m
e, but he didn't. He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had ha
ppened. I didn't want to say anything because I was tired and scared. Even now, whenever I think about that time, I
feel uncomfortable. I don't want to go skating again even now.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
It was long before I went skating once again,
Paragraph 2:
However, ever since then I haven't found any time to go skating,

Para.1:
accompanied by a friend—take special care of me—manage not to fall down—learn to skate
well—become confident.[使用的关键词:fall down,skate well,take care of,fall down]
Para.2:
be occupied in working—learn a lot from—face desperation—have the patience to do—never lose heart —in
case of failure.[使用的关键词:skillful,went skating,scared]
情感表达 :terror gripped sb./feel the blood/pumping through one’s veins/be out of breath sigh with relief/a
wave of relief flooded over sb.
动作描写 :stand up on the ice/head out/fall down/dive into/take care of
经历感悟:express our gratitude/be determined to do/have no submission/face difficulty bravely3.
Paragraph 1
It was long before I went skating once again, accompanied by one of my friends. I felt the blood pumping
through my veins, when I stood on then ice. I was careful and cautious this time. My friend took special care of
me,and I was so fortunate this time that I managed not to fall down. I expressed my gratitude to my friend for
her help.Gradually I learned to skate well and became skillful. I felt very confident and no longer scared.
Paragraph 2
However, ever since then I haven’t found any time to go skating, not because I do not like skating, but because
I am too busy working. I’ve learned a lot from these two skating experiences. We all have moments of desperation.
But if we can face difficulty bravely, that’s when we find out how strong we really are. Whatever you do,you
must have the patience to do it as well as the skill. Remember: never get too much pride because of victory or lose
heart in case of failure
be busy working → be devoted to working;
like skating→ be keen on skating;
learn to do sth. → grasp the skill of
I was wondering how to skate(原文)→ She patiently explained to me how to start.
I went with a friend who was very skillful.(原文)→ Though I couldn’t be like others, who could skate
well.I get scared even now when I think about that time.(原文)→ As for the skating, maybe I could be on the
ice again when my baby is grown up and asks me one hundred times!
I didn’t want to say anything because I was tired and scared.(原文)→Because immediately I dived into the
applying for the suitable jobs.
However, ever since then I haven’t found any time to go skating, because immediately I dived into the
applying for the suitable jobs. And then, fortunately, I met my honey and got married. As was expected, one
baby came into the world and was now smiling to me every day. As for the skating, maybe I could be on the
ice again when my baby is grown up and asks me one hundred times!

Opening the drawer, he took out a revolver.(其中 opening 是分词,它的逻辑主语是句
子主语he)
Stepping carelessly off the pavement, he was knocked down by the bus.(分词stepping的逻
Once published, this book will be very popular.(分词 published 的逻辑主语是this book,和
the news, they were all excited.
at by everybody, she had my sympathy.
laughed.
部分组成,前一部分是名词或者代词,后一部分是分词,前后两部分具有逻辑主谓关系;
The girl staring at him , he didn’t know what to say. (句中现在分词staring与逻辑主语thegirl 是主动关系,相当于As the girl stared at him, …)
Her work done, she sat down for a cup of tea.
When her work was done, …)
Being Christmas, the government offices were close.
Granted that you are right, you should not get angry.(句中granted 是过去分词, 它的逻
Healed, water changes into vapor.
When healed, water changes into vapor.
If healed, water changes into vapor.
Healed, water changed into vapor.
When healed, the water changed into vapor.
Because it was healed, the water changed into vapor.
Weighing about eighty kilos, the box couldn’t be carried by the porter alone.
Since the box weighed about eighty kilos, the porter couldn’t carry it by himself alone.
Although the box weighed about eighty kilos, the porter couldn’t carry it by himself alone.
Knowing that she was ill, he was so worried that he even forgot to eat dinner.
Delightedly realizing that he was coming to help her, she sat down in relief.
Seeing /Watching the bear tearing down the fence, she was thrilled with terror.
Glancing at the dark forest in the distance, she stepped back to the cabin in anxiety.
Feeling nervous, he stood there frozen.
Thinking that she would see her son soon, she walked quickly towards her house
and was wearing a big smile.
Recalling/Thinking back on the days they spent together, she felt cherished and
expressed the gratitude to those things he did for her.
Cherishing the gratitude towards the villagers, he pick the phone with the purpose
of sharing some heartfelt words with them.
Overwhelmed with terror, she just ran as quickly as he could to get out of the old
castle.
Exhausted by the gossips, he finally left her and let go of all the memories there.
Don’t just stand there to do nothing, everything waving at you in fact.
Don’t hesitate to attend the party, joining your fellows and sharing your happiness.
Characterized by the beautiful seaside, the city is always crowded with laughter and
cheers of the tourists.
Featured by the quietness, it is a good place to relax yourself there.
Characterized by the shyness before the public, she is always cautious when among
the students.
She saw the bear approaching quickly, her legs shaking .
He walked into the classroom with joy, his hands holding the prize high .
She didn’t know how to answer her son, her heart broken .
Speaking of the plan of the journey , the children were always filled with joy and
hope as well.
Judging from her clothes , we know that she was still worried and had no interest in

(2020,新高考 I卷)The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy
was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling
to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting
the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she
would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a
man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy.
The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such
a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could
help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have
a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a
good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent
us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it
around to the houses and sell it.”

CALIFORNIA LEE!”
Hettie tried to see the Cally she had known through the makeup and the fancy clothes. Her

the big news. “I got the part!” She sang out as she bounced up and down on the swing. Hettie had
been excited, too. Cally had really wanted this part. It was in Rock Club, a TV musical on Pop
Teen. It was, she said, how all of Pop Teen Channel’s stars started out.
Then the musical came out and Cally, now California Lee, was busy all the time. The last
time the two girls had seen each other was at Cally’s birthday party. Even in her best dress and
new shoes, Hettie felt out of place. Most of the kids at the party were actors. Big boxes with
massive bows covered the birthday present table. Overwhelmed and feeling shy, Hettie took her
gift—a flashlight, and sat in a corner. No one came to look for her until her mom arrived to pick
her up. Soon after, Cally moved to Los Angeles with her family.

Chester was born in a cardboard box with four other cats. He was in a smaller cardboard
box marked “free kittens” when Sasha met him and took him home. From that moment on, he
loved boxes.
In the mornings he sat, licking his paws and fur with his tongue in the rainbow-colored
sunlight. Then he would look around for a box to sleep in.
He slept in hatboxes and shipping boxes, gift boxes and takeout food boxes. He slept in
Sasha’s sock drawer, if she left it open. When he was a kitten, the size of a small load of bread, he
had slept in shoeboxes. But he grew and grew, and now he was a lot bigger. When he tried to sleep
in a shoebox, his furry tummy hung over the sides.
Chester didn’t just sit in boxes, though. Sometimes he sat in flowerpots, pans, or laundry
baskets. Chester also liked to sit in the bedroom of Sasha’s dollhouse, her birthday gift, with the
furniture in a mess. Sasha had to redecorate the dollhouse every day, but she didn’t mind as long
as Chester was happy. Sasha’s mom suggested Chester need a fixed house of his own, but Sasha
ignored.
One day Sasha came home from school, and she couldn’t find Chester. He wasn’t in the
dollhouse, or her sock drawer. “Mom, Dad!” Sasha yelled. “Chester is gone!”
Sasha’s mom looked in the attic (阁楼). There were boxes and dust balls, and even a mouse
that had escaped Chester’s notice, but no Chester. Sasha’s dad looked in the kitchen cabinets. There were pots and pans, and the old can of soup he thought he’d lost, but no Chester.

It was a quiet and peaceful afternoon. Connie, already home from school, was sitting
comfortably in a chair at the kitchen table, doing her homework. Baby Sister was in the living
room, building a castle with her bricks and singing softly to herself.
Suddenly they heard a familiar and unwelcome sound: “La-la-la-la-la-la.”
Connie remarked that trouble was coming, and she was right. A moment later the back door
flew open and banged against the kitchen wall. As 8-year-old Benjy ran into the dining room, he
inquired about everyone’s whereabouts, accidentally crashing the door against the wall with such
force that a small vase dropped to the floor and broke into-pieces.“Benjy, you naughty boy!” cried Connie. “Whatever will Mom say?”
“Hi, Con. What are you doing here? You don’t want to read anymore, do you?” said Benjy
excitedly. “Let’s play something. Look what I found today.”
As Benjy emptied his pockets, sticks, rocks, and candies dropped on the floor and rolled in
every direction. However, Connie refused to play. She mentioned that she needed to learn the
poetry for a test. To Connie’s shock, Benjy suddenly knocked her book out of her hand and
ordered her to play with him first.
Connie was annoyed and jumped out of her chair. “Why did you do that?” she cried. “Why
can’t you leave people alone?”
“Oh, stuck-up (趾高气扬的), are you?” teased Benjy, pulling Connie’s hair and kicking her
book across the room. Unfortunately it hit Baby Sister’s castle and brought it crashing down in
ruins.
“Boo-hoo-hoo!” cried Baby Sister. “You’ve broken my castle, and I wanted Mamma to see
it. Boo-hoo-hoo!” She picked up a block and cast it as hard as she could at Benjy’s head. He

Lani Williams and her mother, Sincerity, have lived in the historic town of Lahaina on the
Hawaiian island of Maui for most of their lives.
Last week, as wildfires began to destroy their beloved town, both the mother and daughter
jumped in their car to escape.
Embers (灰烬) were already falling down on them. So Lani got her mom into the car. But
then the traffic already stood still. Then she saw another fire beside them on a whole house. Lani
thought they were going to die in the car.
Lani and her mom determined the only way out of the fire’s path was to get out of their car
and climb over a nearby seawall, into the ocean water.
That escape route, though, proved too difficult as Sincerity has trouble walking and uses a
walker for assistance.
As Lani and Sincerity was thinking what to do, a man, a complete stranger, came to their
aid.
The man, later identified as Benny Reinicke, told Sincerity to lean on his back so that he
could carry her over the seawall and into the water.
He said, “Auntie, put your weight on me. I got you there.”
Reinicke carried Sincerity on his back over the seawall, and then stayed with Sincerity and
her daughter in the ocean water for over eight hours as they waited for the fires to die out.
“I just kept thinking to myself, like, this is a young guy that could have just left. He could
have swum around to safety, leaving us behind,” Lani said. “But he didn’t. He stayed with us the
whole entire time and made sure that all of us were safe.”
After they made it out of the ocean to safety, Lani and Sincerity lost touch with Reinicke.
When everything came to normal, Sincerity told her daughter that they should find Reinicke
and say thank you to him. Lani tried her neighborhood for some information about Reinicke but
she found nothing.

Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach,
Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before,
I had lost my job, and now our financial situation was terrible. In despair, I had finally put the
home on the market, and a buyer was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to
give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of
feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could
bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing letters for jobs. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my 13-
month-old son, Forrest playing near our big, gentle dog, Brigitte.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of
my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I
sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at
me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself,
was there? Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang thedoorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member
and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help but sigh and went straight back to work. However, I
hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking madly and running out of the
sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open.
Suddenly, I realized my son was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

In second grade, while other kids played outside, I stayed behind at my desk and created
books from construction paper. Using the limited vocabulary of an eight-year-old, I wrote stories
and dreamed of one day becoming an author. My second-grade teacher urged my parents to
nurture (培养) this desire, but they didn’t take my dream seriously.
Through adulthood, the desire to write remained. The dream never died but there were morecertain ways to generate income, so I was controled in different directions. None of the jobs I held
afforded me the opportunity to write, and raising two daughters gave me little free time to pursue
becoming an author. However, I held onto the dream that had flickered (闪烁) in me as a child.
At the age of fifty-eight, I continued to manage the office of my husband’s construction
company, but I was looking for something that would fill the void (空虚感) of our now empty
nest. Writing stories and sharing them on social media filled some of that void, and the stories got
quite a few likes, but it never crossed my mind as I approached my senior years that writing could
be a career for me.
One day, I met a friend from high school who was also my friend on social media. We
hadn’t seen each other in several years, so I walked over to greet her. Anticipating that her first
words would consist of how long it had been since we’d seen each other, I was shocked at what
she spoke out. “You want to write. You need to write.”
She had been reading the stories I shared on social media and had always commented with
encouraging words. But no one had ever spoken these words to me. I had never even spoken these
words out loud to myself. Those simple words she uttered lit a flame that had only been a flicker
for a long time. Deep inside, I knew I still wanted to be an author. I wanted to follow my friend’s
advice. I wanted to write. I needed to write.

The first time I can remember wanting to be a writer was when I was eleven or twelve years
old. It happened in the kitchen on a weekday night. I had written a poem titled How do I know the
World Is Real?
I was sitting at the kitchen table finishing it off when my father walked up behind. I could
feel him reading over my shoulder. I felt anxious and embarrassed. This little thing I was making,
this first poem, was being examined by a very serious critic. My father was a qualified writer, an
award-winning playwright, a Shakespearean scholar and a teacher of literature, including poetry.
So there I sat, hoping he would be distracted (分心的) by something and go away but he
didn’t. It must have only been a minute, but it felt much longer. Then I felt his hand on my
shoulder, gentle and warm. “You may have a talent for writing,” he said. And then he turned his
attention to the refrigerator, took out a beer and went back to his reading chair in the living room.
I wrote lots of poetry in the months that followed and I began to think of myself as a writer.
I liked that feeling.
But soon other interests — touch football, the Junior Police Club, Virginia Lanzo —
crowded themselves into my life. Gradually I wrote less and less. I still longed to be a writer and
so I began to feel guilty about not writing. To relieve my guilt, I promised myself that my other
activities were life experience and that I needed life experience to become the good writer I
wanted to be. It old myself that it was okay not to write so long as I spent some time now and then
wanting to be a writer.
This was the shape of my delusion (错觉) when, at 16, I asked my father finally, “So how
does a person become a writer?”

Emily was a shy girl who often preferred the comfort of her own company. She found it
challenging to express herself and lacked confidence in her abilities. However, her best friend Ada
always believed in her and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
One day, as Emily sat in her art class, her teacher, Mrs. Anderson, announced an upcoming
art competition. The competition showcased the talents of students from various schools in the
city. The room buzzed with excitement. Her mind flashed back to her bedroom where impressive
art work was displayed on the walls, each piece seemingly more attractive than the last. Emily’s
heart skipped a beat at the thought of participating, but her shyness held her back. Self-doubt crept
in, whispering that her work wouldn’t measure up to the talent surrounding her. Emily wondered if
she had made a mistake by even considering entering.
Ada, noticing Emily’s excitement and fear, whispered, “Emily, you should totally enter the
competition! Your art is fantastic, and this could be a great opportunity for you to showcase your
talent.”
Emily hesitated for a moment, contemplating (思忖) Ada’s words. A gentle breeze wafted
through the open windows, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from outside. Emilyclosed her eyes, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She reminded herself of the countless hours
she had spent honing (磨炼) her craft, the late nights and early mornings dedicated to perfecting
her technique. She had poured her heart and soul into her art, and this competition was a chance to
showcase her passion to a wider audience.
With a deep breath, she finally gathered the courage to approach Mrs. Anderson after class.
“Mrs. Anderson, I’m interested in participating in the art design competition,” Emily said, her
voice slightly trembling. Mrs. Anderson smiled warmly, recognizing Emily’s potential. “That’s
wonderful, Emily! I think it’s about time you should share your incredible talent with the world.

Every day, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Abigail would go over to look at herself in the

not great, and she couldn’t sing or dance that well, or play sports. She wasn’t even good at making
jokes as she was so shy.
As she continued to go down the same mind spiral of “you’re not good enough, what kind

Along the way, she saw Peter walking ahead of her. As one of the class’s top students, he
was just so smart and dedicated. Peter always stayed behind after math class to continue working
on the equations. He was so obsessed and talented.
A few mornings later in class, something seemed a bit off with Abigail’s teacher, Mr Fry.
He was normally quite active, moving quickly from the whiteboard to the podium (讲台) to
explain some new knowledge points. But that morning, Abigail noticed that he seemed slower, not
very with it. Then, as he asked the students to copy down a math equation, Mr Fry began shaking
and then started to fall. Immediately, Abigail rushed from her seat in the fourth row, managing to
catch him just in time. He had fainted. “Someone go get the head teacher now!” yelled Abigail in a
loud, clear voice. Fifteen minutes later, Abigail and her classmates watched out the classroom
window at Mr Fry being wheeled across the parking lot on a stretcher (担架) to be put into an

“Good morning,” she said cheerfully, “What can I do for you?” Jackson was heartened by
her sunny smile and friendly attitude. “Good morning, miss,” he said, “I’m a handyman, and I’m
here to offer you and your family my services.” “What kind of work do you do?” she asked.
“I do anything you might need, miss,” Jackson said, “I do some woodwork, painting,
cabinet making; I fix small appliances, some gardening, anything you need and my rates are very
reasonable.” “Come on in,” the woman smiled, “I have a table with a wobbly (摇摆的) leg that
needs fixing, and maybe you can paint my guest room?” Jackson couldn’t believe his ears. He
walked into the woman’s beautiful house, toolbox in hand.
First, he fixed the table, while the woman—who introduced herself as Ruth—sat watching
him work and chatting to him. Then he looked at the guest room. Ruth gave him money to buy
paint so he could fix it up the next day. She also paid him twice what he’d asked for the table.
“But, miss,” Jackson protested, “You’ve given me too much money!” “No, I haven’t, Jackson.”
Ruth told him firmly, “My daddy always told me to pay a fair price for a job well done, and that’swhat I’m doing!”

It was a busy morning and I had several tasks to do before the day became too hot outside.
While walking by the side of a busy road, I noticed an old lady, maybe in her 80s standing in
danger close to the traffic. Although my mind was occupied, I thought to myself that I should
warn her not to stand so close to the traffic rushing by.
When I reached the spot where the old lady was standing, I recognized that she was trying

the middle of the road. When I tried to gently move her back further away from the edge of thebusy road, she said that she was standing there because she had dropped her house key in the
middle of the road and was unable to open her house without the key. I looked around and no one
seemed to be interested in the two of us. I knew I was getting delayed but decided to help.
The traffic was busy on the road with people on two-wheelers and office goers in cars as
well as school buses rushing with school children. It was the worst time of the day to cross a busy
road without a traffic light.
After asking the old lady to stay at a safe distance, I took a deep breath, stepped onto the
road, and waved my hands wildly, expecting not to be hit by the coming vehicles. At first one lane
stopped and then I moved further on to the middle of the road, continuing to wave my hand. Just
then a school bus was approaching me and I stepped in front of it to stop it. My experience has
been that school bus drivers are always considerate of reckless (鲁莽的) pedestrians like me.

There are too many treasures in life we take for granted, the worth of which we don’t fully
realize until they’re pointed out to us in some unexpected way. So it was with Mama’s minestrone
There was no recipe for her minestrone soup. For our large immigrant family, Mama’s soup
guaranteed we would never go hungry. It was a symbol of security. Its recipe was created
spontaneously (非计划安排地) from what was in the kitchen. And we could judge the state of our
family economy by its contents. A hearty soup with tomatoes, pasta, beans, carrots, celery, onion,
corn and meat indicated things were going well. A water y soup suggested hard times.
At one time, however, Mama’s soup pot became a source of embarrassment to me, for I
feared it would cost me a new friend I had made at school. Sol was a thin, dark-haired boy, and an
unusual pal for me because his father was a doctor and they lived in the best part of town. Often
Sol invited me to his home for dinner. The family had a cook in a white uniform who worked in a
kitchen with shining utensils The food was good, but I found it bland (清淡的),
lacking the heartiness of my home food served from flame-blackened pots. Moreover, the
atmosphere matched the food. Everything was so formal. Sol’s mother and father were polite, but
conversation around the table was subdued (克制的). And no one hugged! In our family, warm
hugs were a constant and if you didn’t kiss your mother, she demanded: “What’s the matter, you
sick?” But at that time in my life, all this was an embarrassment.
I had known Sol would like to eat dinner at our house, but that was the last thing I wanted.
My family was so different.

I’ve always had a love for basketball, so when it came time to continue my basketball
journey at Columbia High School, I resolved to make it onto the school’s varsity ( 校
队) basketball team. Any time I wasn’t studying, I was putting on my sports shoes and hitting the
school stadium. Just before bed, I’d look up videos of LeBron James and Kevin Durant, trying to
learn from the professionals. Day and night, all I could think about was how to get better and how
to improve.
After months and months of practice and playing on the junior varsity team, Coach Moore
finally told me one day that I was going to be playing for our school’s varsity basketball team
going into my junior year. Success! Time for the big league! What I didn’t know, however, was
that I was going to face a pretty big challenge in the form of a new transfer student: Chet Harrison.
Harrison had just transferred from another school, Westmoreland High School, where he
had already been playing for the varsity team. There were rumors floating around that he was
nearly guaranteed a spot playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and maybe even
the National Basketball League someday.
I’ll admit, the kid was a natural talent when it came to playing basketball. But Harrison’s
biggest weakness was his personality. He seemed selfish and sometimes acted like a bully, always
seeking attention and showing off after scoring goals. Despite his loyal following of fans, I
couldn’t stand him. But after Coach Moore said that Harrison and I would be playing together, I
decided to accept it and make peace with the situation.
After months of putting up with Harrison’s attitude, I nearly had enough. Just before thewinter break, however, we played a home match against Harrison’s old school Westmoreland and
we lost. Harrison in particular felt utterly embarrassed.

Mr. Thompson dragged his feet slowly down the hallway, burdened with the weight of a
hundred ungraded papers on his shoulders. It was Teacher’s Day, and colorful posters were pasted
around. Despite scattered (零散的) “Happy Teacher’s Day” greetings from some students along
the way, Mr. Thompson felt a familiar emptiness settle in his heart. Teacher’s Day usually meant
an apple and a chorus of “thank yous” from his own class. Today, he expected nothing different.
The morning had been quite tough, filled with a host of math problems and forgotten
homework excuses. One troublemaker in the class had again “accidentally” set his biology project
on fire(thankfully contained). By the time the lunch bell rang sharply in the air, Mr. Thompson felt
like a deflated (泄气的) balloon, the air of enthusiasm slowly leaking out of him. After lunch, he entered his classroom. The whole class was in chaos. The usual pre-class
chatter sounded like a dull roar in his ears. All of a sudden, a scream cut through the air. Mr.
Thompson’s heart was in his mouth. Fights were a rare, but terrifying occurrence in his classroom.
He cast his worn leather briefcase onto his desk, the forgotten pack of papers scattering like
frightened pigeons.
“What in the world is going on here?”
His voice hoarse (嘶哑的) from shouting, Mr. Thompson rushed forward, envisioning
images of black eyes and bloody noses. He struggled to make his way through the desks, the
classroom suddenly deathly quiet.
“Break it up! Now!” he shouted, trying to control the situation.
Finally, he reached the center of the apparent fight, only to find himself staring at...a far
more delicate, fragrant affair. Ethan, the class clown, was on one knee with a bunch of sunflowers
and smiling at him.
Para 1: The whole class looked at Mr. Thompson excitedly.

Twinkling glass pieces fall in an unevenly timed rain while reflecting dead worlds as theyalways do. The girl at the center of it all focuses on a piece reflecting something new, however,
and of this world still existing.
Tears fall from her eyes, but the reason is yet grasped by her. Her mind still recovering, she
agonizes over the loss of everything she had before, falling all around her. But, also, she agonizes
over the loss of her zeal. The memory reflected shows a better and ignorant time, as she walked
into a trap she’d created for herself. Even if she knew where it would lead-these shiftless travels
inviting senselessness-would she have done it all again, just to be happy?
The red in the glass is that of the red in her clothes, and she grasps the shard tightly to add the red
of her hand to it, blurring past and present, running warm over the shimmering surface. She feels,
again, but she feels so much more than before. She feels, overwhelmingly, regret.
These were times that, almost with pride, she had moved meaninglessly. She had gathered
the Arcaea to enjoy them, and not thought even a bit as to why. She had brought on herself a
torturous and tedious hedonistic existence, a manufactured and blinding prison. She had done it all
for nothing, and nearly lost herself. And to a question of “Why?” there was never an answer. Just
to be happy? That hadn’t been it either. Collapsed on her knees, choking through cries with the
memory over her breast, she knows the weight of her errors. She had surrounded herself in love
and life so much that it came to disgust her, and that truth grieves her. In grief the girl cries,
thinking as much as she can, about everything that has happened, and what anything meant.
