Vicky, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, was having difficulty with a piece of writing in English. She thought hard but achieved nothing, so she asked her teacher for some ideas to get started. In the end, she wrote one of her best pieces of work. She was really pleased that she had asked for help.

Everyone finds things difficult sometimes — Vicky is not the only one. Learning how to ask others to lend a hand is an important life skill.

When you might need help

There are lots of reasons why you could need help, such as having trouble with schoolwork or learning a new skill. When you're finding something difficult, or it's taking a long time to make progress, asking for help will move you forward more quickly than 57____.

What stops you asking for help

Asking for help isn't always easy. It can be tricky if you're not sure who to ask because you might think they won't want to help or they haven't got the time. If you think asking for a helping hand is a sign of weakness, it makes it even harder to turn to another person.

Asking for support is brave

Asking for help is an act of bravery. It takes great courage to let someone in, trust them with your story and ask them to help you deal with a problem.

When you ask for help, you won't face the pressure alone. As an old saying goes, "A problem shared is a problem halved." There are other benefits too. By asking for help, you learn to express what you need. You can also put yourself in others' shoes and be more able to offer a helping hand when someone needs it.

Task 1: Answer the questions.

55. Who gave Vicky some ideas about writing?

56. How did Vicky feel after she asked for help?

57. What can be filled in Blank 57?

58. When do people feel it harder to turn to others for help?

59. What are the benefits of asking for help? (List two points)

Task 2: 60. Explain the saying "A problem shared is a problem halved" by using your own example in about 30 words.

People all over the world have some strange hobbies, and one of the most unusual in Britain is "Trainspotting (看火车)". It's usually men over the age of 40, but not always. You'll see them standing around at railway stations and other places where trains pass by, and you'll see them taking photos and exchanging notes with each other. So, what are they doing?

Well, they're collecting information about trains — the numbers on the front of the trains, or the make and model of the "locomotive (火车头)" — the part of the train which pulls all the other parts. In the same way that some people collect toys or stamps, these men collect and exchange all kinds of details about trains and railways.

The idea goes back as far as 1942. That year, a young man named Ian Allan was working at Waterloo railway station in London. It was his job to answer letters from people about trains, and quite a lot of the questions he got were very similar. He found himself getting a little annoyed at always sending the same replies to the same questions, so he had a talk with his boss. He asked if he could write a booklet giving the answers to the most often asked questions — an early form of the FAQs (abb. Frequently Asked Questions) you see on websites nowadays. His boss said if he wanted to waste his time on such a project, he should do it in his own time.

So he did. The first 2,000 copies were all sold in days, and by the 1950s, a million copies of British Railways Locomotives were selling every year. Ian Allan went on to become a successful publisher, and got an Order of the British Empire (OBE, 大英帝国勋章) from the Queen in 1995. He died in 2015, but his trainspotting hobby lives on.

35. People who enjoy trainspotting are mostly ____.

A. kids B. teenagers C. middle-aged men D. old men

36. Trainspotting lovers usually ____.

A. collect railway toys and stamps B. observe railway scenes at railway stations C. build and collect model trains D. gather and exchange details about trains

37. According to the passage, the underlined word "annoyed" probably means ____.

A. angry B. satisfied C. patient D. worried

38. When Ian Allan was asked similar questions about trains, he ____.

A. felt too tired to answer those questions B. asked his boss to help him reply to those questions C. wrote a booklet to answer those questions D. created a website to answer those questions

39. Which statement is true about people's response to Ian Allan's effort?

A. His boss gave him a lot of help to publish his booklet. B. His booklet was free to the public when it was first introduced. C. His work published in the 1950s was not popular anymore. D. His project on questions about trains earned him great success.

40. The purpose of writing this article is mainly to ____.

A. introduce some strange hobbies in Britain B. tell us what trainspotting is and how it came to exist C. explain what makes trainspotting popular in Britain D. show how Ian Allan developed his trainspotting hobby

C 18. A 19. B 20. B

17. on——具体到某一天(January 4th)用介词 on。

18. when——"Braille became blind when he was a child",when unless(除非)和 because(因为)逻辑不通。

19. an——感叹句 "What an amazing idea!",idea 以元音音素开头,用 an。

20. studied——In the following years

C 22. A 23. B 24. A

must(必须)、need(需要)都不符合语境。

23. to make——have the ability to do sth.

24. They——空格在句首作主语,指代前句的 many companies,用主格 They。

21. B(within) 22. A(perfect) 23. D(complain) 24. C(passion) 25. F(though) 多余项:E(beyond)

21. within——"we finished building the stage within one week",

23. complain——start to do sth.

though 引导让步状语从句,注意这里不能填 but(but 不能和前面句子构成这种结构)。

16. develop 17. punish 18. unpleasant 19. wide 20. imagine 21. foreigners 22. record 23. slowly

16. develop——be trying to do sth.,to

18. unpleasant——后半句 "but it soon clears, and the sun comes out again" 说明前面天气是"令人不愉快的",pleasant 加前缀 un- 变成 unpleasant。

20. imagine——It is fun to do sth.,to 后接动词原形;imagination 改成 imagine。

24. were there——反意疑问句。主句 there were no buses or railways 含否定词 no,所以附加问句要用肯定形式 were there。

25. What were the streets like——下一句回答 "The streets were dirty and smelly",是对表语提问,问"街道是什么样子",用 What ... like 句型。

26. When did cities start growing rapidly——对时间 "in the 19th century" 提问,用 When;实义动词 start 的过去式疑问句要借 did。

27. Yes, they did——一般疑问句 "Did factories also appear..."

28. What was another major change——下一句回答 "Another major change was the growth of the cities",是对主语提问,用 What。

C 38. B 39. F 40. A 41. E

55. Her teacher. (原文:she asked her teacher for some ideas to get started)

56. (She felt) pleased. (原文:She was really pleased that she had asked for help)

57. struggling / working alone / trying to do it alone / working on it by yourself (原文:asking for help will move you forward more quickly than 空 —— 即"比自己一个人硬扛")

58. When they think asking for help means they are not strong enough / is a sign of weakness. (原文:If you think asking for a helping hand is a sign of weakness, it makes it even harder...)

59. ① First, you won't face the pressure alone. ② Second, you can learn how to express your need / understand others' feelings and be more able to offer help when someone needs it.

Last term I couldn't solve a maths problem by myself. I told my deskmate about it and she worked it out with me in ten minutes. Sharing really makes a problem smaller.

C 36. D 37. A 38. C 39. D 40. B

35. C——原文 "It's usually men over the age of 40",40 岁以上属中年,选 middle-aged men。D 项 old men 过于绝对。

36. D——原文 "these men collect and exchange all kinds of details about trains and railways",即"收集并交换关于火车的各种细节信息"。

38. C——原文 "He asked if he could write a booklet giving the answers to the most often asked questions",即写一本小册子来回答这些问题。

D 42. A 43. C 44. B 45. B 46. B

Close But Nowhere Near、Remind Me Why You Love Me、Love Shakedown、Don't Devour My Heart。C 项的 "Close the Book on Love" 是暖场嘉宾 Fluffy Puppy 的新单曲,是干扰项。

42. A——海报给出了演出地点(Center City Arena)、日期(June 3, 4 and 6)、开场时间(8:00 P.M.),唯独没有说票价。

43. C——原文 "Tickets available exclusively by phone through TicketBox: 1-866-555-8269",exclusively(仅仅)说明只能电话购票。

44. B——"Last year's shows sold out in SIX MINUTES!"(去年六分钟售罄)是用来证明乐队人气高、受欢迎。

A 项与 refund(退款)信息不符,C 项与 "Just 3 shows" 矛盾,D 项原文是 8:00 P.M.

(1) The Internet.

(2) We can send emails, shop online, read news and watch videos.

(3) Some students spend too much time playing computer games or chatting online.

(4) Because it is not good for their study or health.

(5) We should make a plan for our online time and try to learn something useful from it.

The Internet is helpful, but we should use it wisely.
