Last year,I participated in a week-long volunteer program at a local animal shelter along with several other high school students from different schools.Among them was a boy named Oliver,who was quiet and seldom spoke.He always stayed in the corner,brushing the cats or cleaning the cages silently.I didn't pay much attention to him at first,as I was busy making friends with more outgoing volunteers.
On the second day,after lunch,I reached into my backpack for my favorite water bottle-a blue one with a white lid(盖子)that I had used for nearly three years.It was not there.I searched every pocket twice,growing more anxious with each passing minute.That bottle had been with me through every soccer practice and every exam.I couldn't believe I had lost it.
The next morning,during the break,I noticed Oliver sitting on a bench near the dog run,drinking from a bottle that looked exactly like mine-the blue body with a white lid.My heart sank.Feeling upset and betrayed,I marched over to him.“Why did you take my water bottle without asking?"I scolded,with my voice louder than I intended.
Oliver's face turned red.He looked down at the bottle in his hands,then back at me,and said,“This is mine.It was a gift from my grandmother before she passed away.See this small scratch here.I made it when I was little.”He pointed to a tiny scratch near the bottom.I leaned in and looked closely.I had never noticed a scratch on my bottle because there wasn't one.
So I checked my backpack again.This time,I reached into the very bottom of it and found my own bottle buried deep inside,which was placed in the pocket of my coat.At that moment,I felt a wave of shame washing over me.I had accused Oliver without knowing the truth.
