When Anne and Dudley O’Sullivan decided to finally downsize (精减) at the age of 89, they were surprised
that the hardest part was saying goodbye to their beloved book collection. “We had thousands of books we had
collected over the years. Getting rid of some was hard. Choosing what to take was the biggest decision,” says Anne.
With an ageing population, the “downsizing dilemma” is one confronting thousands of older Australians at the
moment — a difficult decision that involves saying goodbye to a family home that contains memories in every room.
For the Sydney couple they weren’t forced to move — there was no urgent health crisis or emergency. But
instead of waiting for one, they made the choice to downsize into independent living before circumstances took the
decision away from them. “We knew we didn’t need the large space we had in our old house. We just decided it was
time to move. The house we were in met all our needs at the time, but we are not having big parties or anything
anymore so that’s mainly why we were ready,” says Dudley.
For Anne and Dudley, the decision to move into “The Grove by Elysium”, a new benchmark (标杆) for senior
living which presents a lifestyle that promotes independence and active living in a safe and secure environment, was
an easy one. They could see their new apartment from the back balcony of their existing house. Even when the
decision is clear, the process of letting go is rarely simple. Their home was filled with items that held sentimental
value from Dudley’s mother’s 1927 dining table to furniture passed down from family. “Some of it we passed down
to our grandchildren. One of our granddaughters has the old dining table now,” says Anne.
Since moving into Elysium, life has become easier and more enjoyable for them. “Living in a smaller space, it
is so easy to keep clean. We don’t have to do any maintenance ( 维护). If anything goes wrong, we just call
somebody to come and fix it,” Anne says.
24.What usually troubles people in a “downsizing dilemma”?
A.Getting rid of limitations.
B.Living away from relatives.
C.Parting with the old items.
D.Adapting to a new environment.
25.Why did Anne and Dudley decide to move?
A.To pursue larger living space.
B.To escape a severe health crisis.
C.To make it easier to hold parties.
D.To live an independent later life.
26.What does the underlined word “sentimental” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Practical.
B.Emotional.
C.Economical.
D.Recreational.
27.What’s Anne’s tone like in the last paragraph?
A.Concerned.
B.Curious.
C.Satisfied.
D.Ambitious.

In satellite images of the Earth from space, the United States seems to split in half: the eastern side is much
brighter than the west. Across the Atlantic, Europe glints. The Nile Delta in Africa glows like a diamond. Farther
east, Hong Kong and Shanghai are afire. Developed society, it’s clear, is where the light is.
A growing field of research suggests that night-time light itself is far more dangerous than the dark.
Everything that lives on this planet evolved during billions of years along a reliable cycle of day and night. But
artificial light breaks the cycle. This causes sleeplessness among astronauts who take pills but still get only six hours
of shuteye. Shift workers, who rise with the night and work in blue light, experience not only disturbed circadian
rhythms (昼夜节律), but an increased likelihood of breast cancer.
When we, in the industrialized world, do manage to turn off the lights, there are measurable, beneficial
effects. In a widely reported paper last summer, Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado took eight students
camping in the Rocky Mountains for two weeks. They weren’t allowed to use any artificial light after sunset — only
the glow of campfire. After a week, melatonin (褪黑素) started to rise at sunset, peak at midnight, and decrease just
at sunrise. “Internal biological time under natural light-dark conditions tightly synchronizes with environmental
time,” he said.
For those of us addicted to our glowing phones and tablets, an app called Flux can help. It ‘warms’ your
device’s display screen so that it shifts red in the evening, more closely matching the color of the setting sun. Just a
brief glimpse at your mobile phone at bedtime is enough to expose your eyes to artificial light, so fighting such a
disturbance might be an exercise in vain. But even if we can’t completely contain our thirst for light, we can all
make one small gesture, which could stimulate us to unplug a little more.
28.What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Darkness poses health threats to shift workers.
B.Sleeplessness are more likely to cause breast cancer.
C.Humans can easily adapt to the changing surroundings.
D.Astronauts take pills to minimize day-and-night cycle disturbance.
29.What does the underlined word “synchronize with” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Correspond to.
B.Interact with
C.Object to.
D.Blend with.
30.How does Flux help reduce the harmful effects of artificial light?
A.By blocking artificial lights.
B.By warming the screen temperature.
C.By reducing screen brightness.
D.By creating the natural change of light.
31.What’s the purpose of the final sentence?
A.To settle a debate.
B.To suggest a solution.
C.To promote a product.
D.To contradict an assumption.

Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, “Music is the universal language of
mankind.” A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right.
The study conducted by a research team found that people around the world could identify lullabies (摇篮曲),
dance songs, and comforting songs — regardless of the songs’ cultural origin — after hearing just a 14-second clip
(片段). The finding suggests that not only is music deeply rooted in human nature, but that some types of songs
break cultural boundaries.
The findings are based on a wide-reaching experiment in which 750 online participants in 60 countries
listened to brief clips of songs collected from nearly 90 small societies around the world, including hunter-gatherers
and some special farmers. Participants then answered six questions, rating each clip according to whether they
believed the song was used for dancing, calming a baby, treating illness, or expressing love. Two additional uses —
mourning (哀悼) the dead and telling a story — were included as controls.
The data showed that despite participants’ unfamiliarity with the cultures, the random sampling of each song,
and the short duration of the samples, people were able to reliably infer the songs’ functions, and that their ratings
were consistent across the world.
The findings ran counter to expert expectations. The team had also asked professionals, including performers,
composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to identify the song
types. Their answer was no. And not only that, but they predicted that people’s responses will be inconsistent with
one another. “That’s not what we found,” the researchers said.
The researchers also wanted to know whether listeners were recognizing certain non-musical characteristics of
the songs. To test that, the team conducted a second study. This time, they asked listeners about a number of
contextual and musical features, ranging from the gender of the singers to the rhythm of the song.
When data from the two studies were combined, the results showed that songs of the same function shared
similar characteristics — lullabies, for example, tended to be slower and simpler than dance music — suggesting
that something about musical characteristics crosses cultural boundaries.
32.What did the participants do in the first study?
A.They distinguished functions of the songs.
B.They identified the cultural origins of the songs.
C.They recognized the non-musical characteristics of the songs.
D.They sorted the songs according to the gender of the singers.
33.What does the underlined part “ran counter to” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Were equal to.
B.Were similar to.
C.Were superior to.
D.Were opposite to.
34.Why did the researchers carry out the second study?
A.To test the musical knowledge of a wider audience.
B.To collect more diverse songs from various cultures.
C.To confirm the surprising results from the first one.
D.To explore the underlying reasons behind the findings.
35.What can we learn from the two studies?
A.Listeners recognize music by its rhythm. B.Something about music might be universal.
C.Dance music is usually slower and simpler.
D.Cultural similarities lead to similar musical features.

Finding motivation to exercise can be the greatest challenge in working out. 36 ? One way of
achieving this could be opting for types of exercise that fit our personality.
We found that our personality can influence how we engage with exercise. 37 . When we design and
recommend physical activity programs, understanding personality factors is very important. This is because it helps
determine how successful the program will be, and whether people will stick with it and become fitter.
38 . This shapes our behaviors and how we interact with the world around us. Therefore, it makes
sense that personality would affect how we react to different levels of exercise intensity. For example, people scoring
high on extraversion ( 外向) enjoyed high intensity sessions with others around, including team sports. On the
contrary, people scoring high on neuroticism (神经质) preferred private workouts.
The most important part about exercising is finding something we enjoy and not being discouraged if we
don’t immediately find it. It’s OK if we don’t enjoy a particular session. 39 .
We hope that if people can find physical activities that they enjoy, they will more readily choose to do them.
After all, we don’t have to force dogs to go for a walk: Being so physically inactive that we start to feel miserable
might be a peculiarly human thing to do. 40 . But for some reason, many of us humans seem poor at
picking up on these messages it is sending to our brain.
A.We can try something else.
B.Our brains work differently.
C.Doing exercise is essential for our health.
D.But why not try other different workouts instead?
E.But what if working out could be more enjoyable?
F.In effect, our body punishes us by making us miserable.
G.And it also affects which forms of exercise we enjoy the most.

I was a 22-year-old medical student from Sri Lanka, studying in a quiet university town in Russia. For as long
as I could remember, becoming a doctor had been my greatest aspiration — one that had driven me to leave my
family and home behind, to brave the harsh Russian winters and endless hours of tiring study. I had always believed
that with hard work, I could heal the sick and make my parents proud.
But my financial situation took a sudden turn for the worse when my family back in Sri Lanka could no
longer send me money. With no savings left and bills piling up, I had no choice but to pack my bags and return
home, abandoning the dream I’d fought so hard for.
On the morning of my departure, I dragged my heavy suitcase to the bus stop, my steps slow and heavy. The
bus to Moscow was crowded and endless traffic jammed the roads for hours. By the time I finally reached the city
center, I could barely breathe from worry — I was already running late for my flight. I grabbed my suitcase and
rushed toward the underground station, my breath coming in short gasps ( 喘气) as I weaved through the bustling
crowds.
When I finally made it to the airport, my heart sank. The flight gate was shut tight. I approached the counter,
my voice trembling as I begged the staff for help. “You can take the standby flight 3 hours later, Miss,” the staff lady
said, “but you have to pay an extra one hundred dollars for the rebooking fee.”
I had used up all my savings on the journey to Moscow and had no financial support from home; I didn’t have
that money. For me, it was an impossible amount. I wanted to be strong, to hold back my tears, but I couldn’t. I
broke down and cried uncontrollably right there in front of the counter, my shoulders shaking as I thought of my
wasted efforts and the uncertain future waiting for me. People began to gather around me. Suddenly, I felt a gentle
touch on my shoulder.
