Parker Stewart, a sixteen-year-old student, knew last year that he wanted his independent
study on the environment to have a broad impact on the community.
In order to “reduce the carbon footprint” Stewart planned to produce enough solar energy to
16 his school’s science labs. Now his plan is 17 to happen. The installation of 30
solar panels is 18 for late November.
As he began his research on solar 19 , he discovered a useful phone app. By
entering an address, he could 20 how much sunlight the 21 receives each
day.
22 how much sunlight it receives, Stewart found that his school building was the
23 location.
Suggested by his science teacher, Debbie Wheeler, Parker first 24 an energy
audit (测算) of the science lab to see how much energy a 25 lab uses per day.
Then, he started his research and 26 the head of his school to fund him. Now the
project has grown to 27 a total of 30 panels. They are 28 to generate enough
energy to run all four of the science labs on 29 .
“It feels surreal ( 犹如梦幻的) to think that an idea I had stemming from my AP
Environmental class would have this kind of 30 ,” said Stewart, expressing 31
for Wheeler’s help. Wheeler said the success of the project was 32 Parker’s efforts and
willingness to follow through on the 33 from start to finish.

It was a terribly rainy wet winter day. While I was walking from the library after getting my
university applications (申请) for next year at the end of my lunch break, a man was walking
towards me with two huge boxes of brochures.
I thought, “What on earth is that man trying to do? Carry all those things?” Then all of a
sudden he dropped them all! It was a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the path in
front of me! “Oh, no,” I thought. The man sat down and started trying to pick all of the brochures
up. I couldn’t believe how many people walked on by without even caring at all.
I thought, “I’m not going to be one of those people who don’t care about this man, I’m
going to help him.” So, even though it was the end of my lunch break from work and I would be
late if I stopped to help him, I didn’t mind. If I explained what happened, I was sure my boss
wouldn’t mind too much. So, I helped him pick them all up. Then I asked if he would like a hand
in carrying a box to where he went. He said yes gratefully.
I carried one of the heavy boxes. The box I had to carry was very heavy-as I’m quite a
petite (娇小的) girl-but I didn’t complain. I just helped him with a big smile across my face. We
got there and he thanked me very much for helping him out. He also gave me one of these lovely
brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.
What is a better way to spend my lunchtime than helping someone? Luckily, I wasn’t that
late back to work, so nobody minded at all!

Hundreds of people die at sea every year due to ship and airplane accidents. Emergency
teams have little time to rescue those in the water because the probability of finding a person alive
falls dramatically after six hours. Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady
coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult.
New insight into coastal flows gained by an international research team led by Geroge
Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich, promises to enhance the search and
rescue techniques currently in use. Using tools from dynamical systems theory and ocean data, the
team has developed an algorithm to predict where objects and people floating in water will go.
“Our work has a clear potential to save lives,” says Mattia Serra, the first author of a study
recently published in Nature Communications.
In today’s rescue operation at sea, complicated models of ocean dynamics and weather
forecasting are used to predict the path of floating objects. For fast-changing coastal waters,
however, such predictions are often inaccurate due to uncertain boundaries and missing data. As a
result, a search may be launched in the wrong location, causing a loss of precious time.
Haller’s research team obtained mathematical results predicting that objects floating on the
ocean’s surface should gather along a few special curves ( 曲线) which they call Transient
Attracting Profiles (TRAPs). These curves can’t be seen with our eyes but can be tracked from
instant ocean surface current data using recent mathematical methods developed by the ETH team.
This enables quick and precise planning of search paths that are less sensitive to uncertainties in
the time and place of the accident.
In cooperation with a team from MIT, the ETH team tested their new, TRAP-based search
algorithm in two separate ocean experiments near Martha’s Vineyard, which is on the northeastern
coast of the United States. Working from the same real-time data available to the Coast Guard, the
team successfully identified TRAPs in the region in real-time. They found that buoys and
manikins (浮标和人体模型) thrown in the water indeed quickly gathered along these emerging
curves. “Of several competing approaches tested in the project, this was the only algorithm that
consistently found the right location,” says Haller.
“Our results are rapidly obtained, easy to interpret, and cheap to perform,” points out Serra.
Haller stresses: “Our hope is that this method will become a standard part of the tool kit of coast
guards everywhere.”

Who doesn’t stand in awe of the advances that science and its STEM siblings (technology,
engineering, and math) have created to better our world? But since the time of Aristotle, it has also
been recognized that the hard sciences and the humanities must walk side by side in determining
human action.
The ancient Greek philosopher praised “practical wisdom” as the “middle ground” between
scientific knowledge and what he referred to as the “cunning (狡诈的) intelligence of politicians,
military generals and business leaders”. In his Nicomachean Ethics (伦理学), he rejected the idea
that scientific knowledge alone could determine the affairs of the human social world, which he
recognized as too complex and unpredictable to govern with certainty.
Likewise, he saw that cunning was insufficient to shape a society filled with the “good
life.” Aristotle insisted that practical wisdom was required for the advancement of the human race
as it would take into account what he called “the common good,” doing what is right for the
majority of people living together in society.
Aristotle’s philosophy is still sound today. But to the extent that we side with him, we must
challenge our modern era’s overwhelming emphasis on the STEM disciplines as the key to
progress. Yes, we will continue to welcome advances in computerization, robotics,
nanotechnologies, medicine and more. But to ensure these innovations are in service of the good
life, we must also advance our thinking in the humanities: philosophy, social affairs and the arts.
Instead of just STEM, we should perhaps be promoting STEMMA.In that case, we will be
able to raise a new generation that has greater capacities for managing collective human efforts
and appreciating the arts. Management education — the new “M” in the acronym (缩略词) — has
not always been integrated into humanistic thinking, but it must become more so. Our goal must
be to develop the thoughtful business leaders of the future. Regarding the “A,” how could it be
beneficial to the future without emphasizing the arts, which inform our knowledge of beauty and
meaning in human affairs? All the brilliant discoveries of STEM will not solve the grand
challenges of today’s world — ignorance, poverty, intolerance and political conflict — without the
practical wisdom of humanities-trained leaders.
We can’t march boldly into the future without demanding rapid advancement in the
capabilities necessary for preserving our human dignity in a world of artificial super intelligence.
Humans are not robots and neurons ( 神经元) are not digital switches. It is only through the
humanities that we will be able to appreciate the answers that superintelligent computers give us
when we ask them the hard questions. It is only through the humanities that we will increasingly
recognize and build on what we humans uniquely are.
51.What is the primary limitation of relying only on STEM disciplines?
A.They lack the precision needed for modern innovations.
B.They cannot address complex human social challenges alone.
C.They prevent the development of artificial superintelligence.
D.They are too focused on theoretical rather than practical knowledge.
52.The term “practical wisdom” as used by Aristotle emphasizes ______.
A.a balanced approach that considers the common good
B.the need for military strategies in societal development
C.the importance of technological advancement above all else
D.the superiority of scientific knowledge over political cunning
53.What is the author’s purpose in proposing the term “STEMMA”?
A.To replace STEM entirely with a new educational framework.
B.To criticize the current emphasis on technology and engineering.
C.To argue for the inclusion of management and arts in STEM education.
D.To promote the study of ancient Greek philosophy in modern curricula.
54.Which of the following best summarizes Aristotle’s view on scientific knowledge and
cunning intelligence?
A.Both are equally harmful to societal progress.
B.Neither is sufficient without practical wisdom.
C.Scientific knowledge is superior to cunning intelligence.
D.Cunning intelligence is more relevant to modern politics.
55.How does the author view the relationship between humans and artificial superintelligence?
A.Humans will eventually be replaced by intelligent robots.
B.Superintelligence will make human decision-making irrelevant.
C.STEM disciplines alone can ensure ethical use of superintelligence.
D.Human dignity and unique qualities must be preserved via humanities.

第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)
阅读下面短文,并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
One hot August afternoon, Deena Hoagland and her son Joe sat on a floating platform at
Dolphins Plus, a marine center in Key Largo, Florida. Nearby, a large dolphin circled,
occasionally lifting its head through the water to observe them. Suddenly, the dolphin threw water
on them. Three-year-old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for
the first time since.
Joe was born with a rare heart condition and spent much of his first three years in hospitals.
After several heart surgeries, the last one led to a stroke, which left him unconscious for eight days
As a result, he lost movement on one side of his body and couldn’t see out of one eye. Feeling
hopeless and deeply saddened, Joe became despondent and lost interest in everything, even his
favorite toys. Doctors suggested placing him in a full-time rehabilitation center.
Deena refused and decided to try dolphin-assisted therapy. She called Dolphins Plus and got
permission to bring Joe. To the surprise of Lloyd Borgas, the owner, Deena arrived with Joe
minutes after the call. Borgas was unsure about the wisdom of his generosity but led them to a
platform where Joe met Fonzie, a playful dolphin.
Joe’s reaction to Fonzie was positive, and Deena brought him back daily. Joe slowly began
to recover from his depression. With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side.
Trainers encouraged Joe to swim with Fonzie, and by mid-September, he was swimming with his
new friend. Trainers challenged Joe to feed Fonzie with his left hand, helping him regain strength.
Over the next two years, Joe fully recovered.
Now a healthy teenager, Joe frequently visits Fonzie and helps his parents with Island
Dolphin Care, a program Deena started to help other special-needs children. The program has
been successful, helping many children and their families. Deena emphasizes that while dolphins
have no special healing powers, the joy and laughter they bring to children can feel magical.
56.Why did Joe smile and laugh for the first time since his stroke? (no more than 10 words)
57.What difficulties did Joe experience after his surgery? (no more than 15 words)
58.What does the underlined word “despondent” in Paragraph 2? (1 word)
