I loved to argue. My fixation on being right had been a mainstay in my life and had often stirred up trouble in
my family; there were moments when my marriage became strained and my kids grew distant. The longest fight I
had was with my parents, and it dragged on for nearly a year.
My habit seemed immortal. Until an afternoon with my granddaughter opened my eyes to the impact my
behaviour was having on the people around me. We were playing a board game when she made a move that broke
the rules. I corrected her, but she ended up making the same mistake again. I read the rules out loud and asked if she
got it this time. She smiled at me and shook her head. “Grandpa, why are you so stubborn?” she asked. “It’s just a
game. We’ re here to have fun, aren’t we?” Something about her words really hit home. We weren’t there to be right,
we were there to enjoy ourselves — how to move the pieces was merely a backdrop. What truly mattered was our
bond and the moments we shared.
A few days later, my son came over for dinner. During the meal, he shared a viewpoint that struck me as
baseless. Typically, I would have launched myself headfirst into a heated debate with him. But this time, as I parted
my lips to respond, I found myself popping a forkful of pie into my mouth instead, enjoying it quietly. My tolerance
surprised me, but what really took my breath away as I listened to him was a newfound desire to understand him.
This experience brought me a joy that far surpassed (超出) the fleeting satisfaction of winning an argument.
In hindsight (事后想), my drive to win hadn’t really been about seeking the truth, but about showing I was
better than everyone else. By letting go, I gained way more than I ever did by pushing back. Now I recognise that
arguing at the dinner table is much like deciding to drink an extra cup of coffee. It is a matter of self-discipline. I had
always understood this concept in theory, but it took a seven-year-old’s intervention for me to apply it.
24.What did the author’s passion for argument contribute to?
A.Damaged relationship.
B.Moral development.
C.Troublesome children.
D.Bittersweet marriage.
25.What did the author learn from his granddaughter’s words?
A.Good habits were hard to develop.
B.Rules didn’t work in a board game.
C.Adults were more serious than kids.
D.Connection was more vital than right.
26.What surprised the author most during the dinner?
A.The awareness of tolerance.
B.The flavour of the tasty food.
C.The brief joy from winning.
D.The urge to understand others.
27.Why does the author mention an extra cup of tea?
A.To spread a complex concept.
B.To highlight the need for truth.
C.To identify the root of his habit.
D.To compare two daily activities.

MIT scientists have created a kind of high-tech “wrap” capable of collecting safe drinking water directly from
the air even in extreme environments.
The water harvester is made from hydrogel (水凝胶) that is wrapped between two layers of glass. At night,
the device absorbs water vapor (蒸气) from the atmosphere. During the day, the vapor becomes water on the glass
thanks to a coating that keeps the glass cool. The liquid water then flows down the glass and is collected in a system
of tubes. The hydrogel comes in a special shape — a series of round roofs with a circular base, which are like a sheet
of wrap that expands when absorbing water vapor. The shape increases the material’s surface area, which increases
the amount of vapor it can hold. This process requires no electricity, enhancing its sustainability and suitability.
Scientists tested the new device for a week inDeath Valley, the hottest and driest place in NorthAmerica. It
could even generate about 1/4 to 2/3 of a cup of water(57 ml-161.5ml) every day. In other areas, the device should
generate more. One challenge with the hydrogel had been the leakage of harmful salts into the collected water, but
the team overcame this by using a salt stabilizer, reducing harmful salt leakage to concentrations well below safety
limits for groundwater.
While one panel might not produce enough water to sustain an entire household, it doesn’t take up much
space, which means multiple panels could be set up for a single household. The scientists estimate that eight panels
could be enough to supply a housebold in places where there isn’t easy access to safe drinking water. Compared to
the costs of bottled water, the device could pay for itself in less than a month and last at least one year.
The new water harvester is a major step towards providing safe, accessible drinking water for people across
the globe, and works wherever you may find water vapor in the air. The team plans to test the panels in more
resource-limited environments to learn more about the device’s performance under different conditions.
28.What determines the amount of the hydrogel’s water harvest?
A.The quality of the cool coating.
B.The number of the glass layers.
C.The specially designed structure.
D.The vapor-absorbing frequency.
29.What advantage of the device is stressed in paragraph 3?
A.It is sustainable.
B.It is high-tech.
C.It is productive.
D.It is heat-resistant.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The device’s potential for home use.
B.The device’s low cost for households.
C.The panel’s suitability for tiny spaces.
D.The panel’s capacity for water supply.
31.What is the team’s next focus concerning the device?
A.Doing global tests on it.
B.Exploring its adaptability.
C.Enhancing its effectiveness.
D.Introducing it to other fields.

When rhinovirus (鼻病毒), the most common cause of the common cold, enters the nasal passages (鼻腔), the
cells lining the nose activate a wide range of defenses designed to limit the virus and stop it from spreading. In a
study published in the journal Cell Press Blue, researchers show that this early response plays a key role in whether
a person becomes sick and how serious their symptoms become. The findings suggest that the body’s reaction to
rhinovirus often matters more than the virus itself.
To closely observe how nasal cells fight the virus, the research team made a lab model of human nasal tissue.
They grew nasal cells for four weeks and let the top of the tissue be exposed to air. Using this model, the researchers
were able to monitor how thousands of individual cells respond together.
They also examined what happened when the cellular sensors ( 细胞传感器) responsible for finding
rhinovirus were prevented. When nasal cells find rhinovirus, they release interferons (干扰素) that activate defenses,
making it difficult for the virus to reproduce and spread. If interferon activity begins quickly, the virus can be
controlled early. When the researchers held back this response, the virus spread rapidly, affecting many more cells
and causing significant damage.
The team notes that their model includes fewer cell types than are present in the human body. During the real
situation, additional cells, including immune cells, are drawn to the site to help fight the virus. The researchers say
that understanding how these additional cell types in the nasal passages and airways influence the body’s response to
rhinovirus will be an important focus of future work.
“The study advances the theory that the body’s responses to a virus, rather than the virus itself, are hugely
important in determining whether or not a virus will cause illness and how serious the illness will be,” Foxman, a
professor in Yale School of Medicine says, “Focusing on the response is an exciting way for novel cures.”
32.What did researchers do with the lab model?
A.They prevented the entry of the virus.
B.They examined the spread of the virus.
C.They added interferons against the virus.
D.They watched nasal cells’ reaction to the virus.
33.What will the researchers probably centre on next?
A.Studying how other cells affect responses.
B.Adding more cell types to their lab model.
C.Developing new medicines to kill rhinovirus.
D.Exploring ways to draw immune cells quickly.
34.What is Foxman’s attitude towards the study on rhinovirus?
A.Critical.
B.Positive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.New Cures For Illnesses.
B.Effective Ways Against Cold.
C.Nasal Cells Control Viruses.
D.Early Reaction Fights Rhinovirus.
第二节(共5 小题;每小题2. 5 分, 满分12. 5 分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want to use long and strong passwords on the Web that are
easy for you to recall but difficult for others to guess. However, some of the most commonly used passwords (密码)
are based on family names, hobbies, or just a simple pattern. 36 Let’s take a look at some of the most
common password mistakes and how to fix them.
Password: brian12 kate 5 — It’s my kids’ names and ages.
Problem: This password uses too much personal information, along with common words.
Solution: 37 And rather than using family names, we could combine a character from a movie with
a type of food. For example, Chewbacca and pizza could become chEwbAccA&p! ZZa.
Password: w3St! — It’s just the beginning of my street address with a few extra characters.
Problem: 38 It also includes part of the user’s address, which is publicly available ( 可获得的)
information.
Solution: A stronger version of this password would be much longer, ideally more than 10 characters. We
could also use a nearby street name instead of her current address. For example, Pemberly Ave could become
PeMberLY% Av.
Password: 123abccba321 — 39
Problem: While patterns like this are easy to remember, they’re also some of the first things a hacker ( 黑客)
might guess when trying to get your account (账户).
Solution: Remember that random passwords are much stronger than simple patterns. If you’re having trouble
creating a new password, try using a password generator (密码生成器) instead. Here’s an example of a generated
password: #eV $plg& qf.
Password: BrAve Z! 2 — I use the same passwords for all my accounts.
Problem: 40 However, remember that you should never use the same password with different
accounts.
Solution: Create a unique password for each of your online accounts.
A.This password is available at any time.
B.This password is too short and simple.
C.It’s long and difficult for someone else to guess.
D.There’s nothing really wrong with this password.
E.It’s easy to remember the simple pattern and type on my keyboard.
F.This kind of password is easy to remember but highly insecure (不安全的).
G.A stronger password would use symbols, capital letters, and a random order.

and gloveless, entered the hall, his face and hands red from the cold. 50 , my neighbor rose and 51

第二节(共10 小题;每小题1.5 分 ,满分15 分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Powerful drumbeats filled the theatre as performers firmly 56 (strike) large drums in perfect
rhythm. This was the opening scene of Drum Music in Dongcang, a traditional drum performance I experienced in
Xi’an this summer, and it 57 (immediate) caught my attention.
Originating from the drum music of the Tang Dynasty court, the performance told a 58 (remark)
story of how this ancient art has survived across centuries. The show kicked off as the history 59

(introduce) by Mr. Zhao, a 70-year-old drum master. His disciples (徒弟) then stepped onto the stage, delivering
forceful performances with dance and erhu music. The steady rhythm of the drums, 60 (combine) with
carefully designed movements, created a strong sense of history and discipline.
As the performance unfolded, the audience learned that the decline of the Tang Dynasty forced court
musicians to leave the palace. They carried the drum music 61 them and brought it into ordinary
communities. 62 had once belonged to the court became something people could hear, learn, and pass on.
Over generations, the tradition took root in Xi’an. The message was clear and touching: music is meant 63
(share).
Toward the end, when the performers revealed how many years they had spent practising, the audience was
deeply moved and responded with enthusiastic 64 (applaud). Watching Drum Music in Dongcang was
65 experience that left a lasting impression on me.

第二节(满分25 分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack wiped his hands on his workwear, the warm smell of fresh bread filling his small shop. The morning rush
was over. He was about to take a short break when a large shadow fell across the shop window. He looked up and
froze. A big, thin dog had its front paws on the counter, its nose pressing against the pile of bread to be sold. Before
Jack could move or speak, the dog grabbed a large loaf of bread with its big mouth.
“Hey!” Jack shouted, rushing from behind the counter. The dog pulled back its front paws, the bread held in
its jaws, and ran down the quiet street. Anger rose in Jack’s chest. That was his best and expensive bread! He
grabbed a broom (扫帚) handle near the door and ran out after the “thief”.
The dog ran fast, but Jack kept it in sight. It turned into a narrow backstreet between two old buildings. Jack
followed, completely out of breath. He entered the backstreet and stopped. The big dog was sitting on the ground,
panting heavily, beside a large cardboard box. Its mouth was empty. “Ah,” Jack thought, “the bread must be in the
box.” His grip tightened on the broom handle. This “thief” needed to learn a lesson.
He walked slowly toward the dog, his shoes making soft sounds on the stones of the backstreet. The dog
turned its head and saw him. It was clearly tired, too tired to move a step. It just watched him, its body low to the
ground. Jack raised the broom handle, ready to give it a sudden blow. Just then, a soft, high sound came from the
box. Jack’s arm stopped in the air. He took a careful step forward and looked into the box. Inside, a tiny puppy (小
狗) was happily eating pieces of the “stolen” bread, its little tail wagging wildly. The big dog, the mother, watched
her baby, and then looked back at Jack with tired eyes.
