原文解码(what to read)
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small
gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the
backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn't counted
on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50 pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could
easily knock over my niece's small boys and my six month old granddaughter. So, when my
brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in
the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It
started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my
brother wasn't happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave
rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn't heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed
wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: "Not a chance."
Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he'll
get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking
he should call first. However, my conscience(良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my
brother's shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty five years had passed away a few
months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

实践演练
情节构思三原则
逻辑连贯:“我” 意识到错误后主动道歉,符合前文 “良心不安” 的铺垫;带妻子做的饼
干(呼应前文妻子的角色)和对
Toby
的关怀,体现诚意。
细节支撑:通过
Toby
I realized it was me who was at fault. How could I have been so selfish? My brother had already
lost so much, and I’d pushed him away over a silly rule. Toby wasn’t just a dog—he was the only
warmth in my brother’s lonely days. I paced the room, my heart heavy with regret. “Let’s make
amends,” I told my wife, who nodded, already reaching for the flour.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door. My hands shook as I
knocked. The door opened, and Toby bounded out first, nose twitching at the bag in my hand. “For
him,” I mumbled, holding out the biscuits. My brother’s eyes softened. “Toby’s been moping,” he
said, voice thick. I stepped closer. “I’m sorry—I was wrong.” He pulled me into a hug, and Toby
jumped up, licking both our hands. The rain of that day had long stopped, but a new warmth was just
beginning.
(得分点:心理描写体现愧疚;Toby 的动作推动情节;兄弟对话简洁却饱含情感;结尾用
“雨停” 与 “温暖开始” 呼应主旨,象征关系修复。)

参考范文
Mother held up the half-finished glove, her tone softening as she met her son's startled gaze.
"This is what you've been busy with these days?" she asked, her voice no longer sharp with
anger. The boy's shoulders relaxed slightly when he saw the glove, his voice small but clear as
he started to explain. "I... I wanted to make you a new one. The old scarf was frayed, but I
thought the wool was still good. Your hands get cold when you wash dishes every night." His
words hung in the air, simple yet heavy with care.
She sat down beside him, the half-knit glove resting between them. Reaching out, she
gently straightened his messy hair, her thumb brushing the red mark where he'd bitten his lip. "I
should've asked why first," she murmured, eyes stinging. The boy leaned into her touch, a tiny
smile breaking through. "Can we finish it together?" he asked. She nodded, picking up the
needles. Outside, sunlight spilled over the windowsill, turning the floating dust into golden
sparks—just like the warmth that was weaving its way back into their home.
