“well
begun is half done!”
Para1:But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again.
Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest.
境描写“the darkness ruled the forest”。
Para 1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark
again. Desperate and hopeless , Jane knelt down , tears streaming down her face.
Para 2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was ,
she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance.
Para 1: Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
Afraid that I might hurt the lovely small creature , I automatically let out a cry to stop
Para 2: We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted
and hungry , I wondered if we could find our way back.
Para1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark
again. Feeling disappointed , Jane had to stay alone for another night.
Para 2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Feeling refreshed ,
she continued to walk along the stream to find the way out.
Para 1: The car abruptly stopped in front of him. "Get into the car." Paul
shouted at Mac.
Para 2: We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights
along the way. I looked out of the car window, winding rivers, lofty mountains, sunny
beaches and deep valleys holding me entirely in their fascination .
Para 1: The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought
with us. Dad exchanged a glance with me . Why not camp to satisfy Mom?
BOOM, CRASH! The wind was howling outside of my house. We were having a terrible thunder
storm. I was very scared.
Why does trouble always follow me around? Do I have a "kick me" sign on my back or
something?
Para.1)The pay day arrived at last.I was delighted to finally
get the payment after I worked hard for two weeks. On the way home full of excitement, I
thought about how to make use of the “huge” sum of money. “I needed a new football in the
future. ” I whispered to myself.Approaching my house, I noticed my dad and mom standing beside
the old truck of my family, looking sad. It seemed as if something wrong had happened... ...
【分析】续写第一段中的“On the way home full of excitement”表明了故事主人公心情非
常好,但是当面对新的问题“my dad and mom standing beside the old truck of my
“感到一阵 ……”:feel a flush of...= feel a wave of...= feel a feeling/sense of...[joy(高兴),
excitement(兴奋), pride (骄傲), anger(愤怒), rage(狂怒), panic(惊慌), alarm(惊慌) , terror(恐惧), horror(恐惧), fear(恐惧), unease (不安), sorrow (悲伤), sadness(悲伤), grief(悲伤),
embarrassment(尴尬), disappointment(失望), shame(羞愧), guilt(愧疚)]。
例如:She felt a wave of panic, but forced herself to leave the room calmly.
Para.2)The video was posted online the Monday before
Halloween.I looked just like a pumpkin head in it. Embarrassed and a little annoyed, I fled to my
room, but Mom stopped me. “You haven’t read the comments yet.” I scrolled down the screen and
marveled at the stories the viewers shared about Halloween.
The video was posted
(Embarrassed and a little annoyed),但当听力
(1)心里想: think /say to oneself
(2)害怕;恐慌:with fear /panic /terror; tremble; shiver; shake; quake; tremble with fear; be
seized with panic; scream with panic/terror; freeze/shake with terror
(3)生气;愤怒:with rage; be red-cheeked with rage; tremble /shake with rage; feel like
crying with rage; be speechless with rage; be boiling with rage
(4)兴奋;激动:with excitement; yell with excitement; jump up and down with excitement;

/One’s eyes got misty.
/One’s eyes misted /dimmed with tears. /tears roll down one’s
(2021 年,新高考 I 卷,Para.2)The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and wok e
their mother up . When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of
her, she was very surprised . It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for herthat moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she
didn’t expect. Th e childre n sai d loudl y, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mothe r hugge d them
tightly and kissed them again and again.
有“saw”和“was very surprised”,之后在双胞胎发出节日问候“Happy Mother’s Day”
(1)常用词语:open one’s mouth; widen one’s eyes; rise to one’s feet; jump to one’s feet;
shout at the top of one’s lung; reach out(伸出手)
Having passed the exam, he was so happy that he was at a loss what to do.
She opened the gift with her hands shaking slightly.
Para.1)Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then
my dad turned around and shouted, “Hold on!” All of a sudden the horse began to run. My dad
tried to keep up behind us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped
beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
另一个困境,即“we were way off the track”。
But bad luck for sb, ...
She tried her best, but in vain.
Sb did sth, wondering what to do next.
Sb did sth, not knowing what to do next.
Para.2)At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. My heart
leaped with joy as I knew we were likely to be saved. Elli used pepper spray again to buy us
enough time. But this time the bear became more alert. He regarded us with the merciless
necessity of hunger, so we throw all the food we have. He then turned away and started
devouring. As we were climbing the rope ladder, Elli prayed like thousand times to show
thankfulness of being safe and sound.
(My heart leaped with joy),并且当再次遇到熊的攻击时,主人公就又有了
新的想法(we throw all the food we have),这将故事的冲突与发展带到另一个情境中;
此外,当获救后,主人公又开始感谢( Elli prayed like thousand times to show
thankfulness of being safe and sound)。
It suddenly occurred to sb that...=It hit sb that...=It struck sb that...=It
dawned on sb that...
Para.2)A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They
found the dangerous situation, where three men circled the wolf. Mac's friends also jumped off
their bicycles and joined the fight with the wolf. More and more cars stopped. Some drivers took
out the sticks from the cars, and some took out the knives, even the guns towards the wolf. In the
meanwhile, the wolf might feel the people's threats around, so it began to step back slowly. Soon,
it ran away off the road and disappeared in the distance.
【分析】续写第二段首句提示给出了来帮忙的人(the other two cyclists arrived),之
(Mac's friends also jumped off their bicycles/ More and more cars
stopped),故事中的人物有了一系列与狼对抗的动作,如“circled the wolf”“took out the
sticks from the cars”“took out the knives”等,这些将故事中人狼对峙的冲突进一步推向高
(1)鼓起勇气 (做某事):take /gather /one’s courage (to do sth)
(2)毫不犹豫/选择:without a second thought/without delay/without hesitation/having no
choice
Para.2)One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a
serious disease. I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case. He was a
little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits. I offered to do
the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We began to work as
a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr. Henderson’s
was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we also learned the
significance of teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons
can travel farther.
(We began
to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time),这引发了主人公的反
响,并且主人公的这种体验不断地深入(从“we also learned the significance of teammates”
到“a group of persons can travel farther”),充分展现了主人公内心的矛盾冲突从不断
Not until... did sb realize /notice that...
It was only... that sb realized that...
What a valuable lesson I have learned from...!
What an unforgettable experience!
God helps those who help themselves.
Everyone is the architect of his own fate.
Life is full of laughter and tears. Only by accepting both can we enjoy life.
Never underestimate the power of your action.

It was a bright and sunny Saturday when Mr. Jones moved in next door. He is an old
gentleman with thick-framed glasses and a wiry beard. I could see his many belongings: antique
chests, a large and tattered (破败的) painting of a rainforest, and boxes and boxes of old books.
The line of movers bringing items into the house was endless! However, there was one item that
Mr. Jones refused to let the movers touch. It was covered in a red velvet cloth and he carefully
carried it inside himself.
That night, I heard an odd noise coming from Mr. Jones’s house. It was such a strange noise
that I could not sleep at all! To my astonishment and anxiety, every night the strange sound would
come up. After much consideration, I decided to investigate this mystery. I wondered what on
earth Mr. Jones was? What could this strange noise be? What could he be hiding? Many doubts
always echoed in my mind.
The next day, to confirm my guess, I slid into his house. Mr. Jones had left the window of
his basement unlocked and I crawled inside without permission. Making several attempts, I made
it! I felt around the walls for a light switch and when I finally turned the light on, I was amazed!
The basement was like a museum. There were many exquisite jungles and animals’ models
which were often seen in museums. On the bookshelf were some academic books about zoo
animals. I also noticed some remaining corns in the corner. When I glanced at the table, there was
a first-aid kit on it! Determined to find out the truth, I was making my way across the room when I
heard that strange noise again, coming from upstairs! Nervously, I walked up the stairs as quietly
as I could but then on the last step… the floor beneath my foot creaked I paused,
hoping no one was home to hear me.

Centering myself on the ice of the skating rink (溜冰场), I prepared for my skating
performance. A confident smile spread across my face. This was the day I’d perform my best
skating in a year, attempting a challenging jump known as the axel My friend
Caleb yelled from the stands, “You can do it, Harper!” My other friends crossed their fingers. My
dad also shouted, “You look beautiful!”
As the music started, I was fully prepared. With a graceful circle, spins, and a broad smile, I
began my performance. Everything progressed smoothly until I reached the crucial axel jump. As I
prepared to jump, suddenly a mix of excitement and nerves filled me. To be frank, I could do it
when I practiced off-ice, but I’d only landed it on-ice several times in my entire life. My coach
had strategically placed it at the start of my routine to ensure my legs were at their peak for this
demanding move.
I took the leap, but performed a distinct jump. It was a mere half-circle, falling short of the
axel’s one and a half. I heard my friends sigh and saw my coach raise an eyebrow.
Determined, I attempted the axel again, but failed. I repeatedly tried and failed, spending so
much time on the ice. When my routine ended, my dress was wet and I was far behind the beat. The silence was deafening, marking the most embarrassing moments of my skating career. As I
skated away, I could sense the weight of everyone’s stare upon me.
As I made my way to my coach and dad, I heard the crowd cheering for Marlo, a charming
eight-year-old, who was gracefully skating past me, leaving me with an intense sense that my
skating career had come to an end.
My coach handed me my skate guards, asking if I was improvising (即兴创作) my routine.
I didn’t know how to reply. My friends were embarrassed for me, avoiding my eyes. They seemed
to discuss me except Caleb, my close friend. He brought me hot chocolate and apologized before
skating his own routine.

Samantha and Jake had always been close to nature. Growing up in a small cottage situated
deep within a thriving forest, they found comfort and wonder in the beauty of the natural world.
Their daily adventures included exploring the woods, listening to the birdsong, and gazing at the
starry night sky. However, as the years passed, they couldn’t help but notice the gradual changes
in their beloved forest.
By the time Samantha turned sixteen and Jake was thirteen, they began to witness the
effects of deforestation on their wonderland. The sound of chainsaws (电锯) and the sight of fallen
trees became increasingly common. The siblings were feeling extremely shocked and sad by the
loss of the forest they had cherished since childhood.
One day, after a particularly disheartening walk through the decreasing woods, Samantha
came across a book about environmental heroes. These individuals had devoted their lives to
preserving the natural world, and their stories of resilience (恢复力) and impact lighted a spark
within Samantha’s heart. She believed that if they could make a difference , so could she and Jake.
Samantha couldn’t wait to share her new-found inspiration with her brother. She rushed
home , her mind filled with ideas of how they could protect their forest. When she explained her
thoughts to Jake, he nodded in agreement. “Our forest is like family to us,” he said, ”We can’t just
stand by and watch it disappear. “
With firm determination, Samantha and Jake decided to take action. They began by
organizing tree-planting events in their community, enlisting (征募) the help of friends and
neighbors. Each sapling they planted was a symbol of hope for the future of their forest.
Soon , their efforts gained favor. The local schools joined their cause, incorporating
environmental education into the curriculum and the community united behind them. Samantha
and Jake’s forest restoration project had become a movement that united people of all ages.

Ninny grew up with her grandparents. Her grandmother worked as a housekeeper, and her
grandfather was too weak to move. In his wheelchair, Grandfather told her stories about flowers,
princesses and sunrises. Those stories always ended with the same message: A simple act of
kindness creates an endless ripple (涟漪) that comes back to you.
One day, Ninny was at the supermarket with her grandmother. They only bought the bare
minimum. “Oh!” Ninny jumped when she spotted a chocolate cake. She pulled her grandmother’s
sleeve. “Grandfather’s birthday is around the corner! Can we please, please, please have it?” The
old lady eyed the chocolate cake. There were beautiful decorations on the top with fancy designs
on the side. Picking up the cake, Grandmother took a close look at the price and sighed, “Ninny,
we can’t afford it. It’s $40!”
Ninny pouted ( 噘 嘴 ), trying to convince her grandmother. Yet she knew that her
grandmother would not bend, even if she begged with her puppy eyes. No matter what, money did
not grow on trees. Ninny sighed and turned around. Grandmother gave her a sad smile and turned
towards the cashier.
Almost out of nowhere, a man with a 50 dollar bill and the chocolate cake approached her
and handed these things to Ninny. “Have them, dear.”
Ninny took a closer look at the man. He was average. Average face, average clothes, and
average everything. He was just a random man.The man bent down and maintained eye contact with Ninny. “Do you know why I’m giving
you these?” Ninny shook her head. “When I was a little boy, a man bought me a chocolate cake.
He just overheard a conversation I had with my mother. Nothing else. He gave me some money
and a small slip of paper. Then he left.” The man reached into his pocket and took out a dog-eared
piece of paper. Looking at the words written, Ninny wore a smile on her face, for she was so

A bunch of guys from the team waved from the dugout. I jogged over half-heartedly. “Whydo you look so unhappy?” David asked. “I have to go to my stepsister’s dance recital,” I sighed.
“It could be worse,” David replied. I shot him an I-highly-doubt-that expression. “What if you had
to perform in it?” Kevin said as he leaped and twirled (旋转) like a rodeo bull. I tried not to smile.
The truth was that I had a lot of mixed-up feelings since Mom remarried a few months ago.
I had always loved baseball, but even that felt different lately. I could barely concentrate.
After practice, David and I sat together waiting for our ride. “I wish things didn’t have to
change,” I said, “you know, for my mom and me.” “I have a stepmother and stepbrother too,”
David said as if it were no big deal. “Seriously?” I hadn’t realized that, so I asked. David
shrugged, “They’re just Mom and Dennis now. Give it a chance.” I let out a breath, still unsure
about the recital tonight. Still unsure about everything!
Back home, I found Zoe in her costume, but something was wrong. Her arms were folded
tight across her chest, and her eyes were glossed with tears. “What’s wrong, Zoe?” I asked.
“Opening night jitters (战战兢兢),” my stepfather said. “She doesn’t want to be in the recital,”
Mom said.
Huh. This should have been the best thing that could have happened — the possibility of
not having to go to the performance. But somehow it wasn’t. Zoe had practiced so hard. And she’d
reminded me at least a thousand times where she would be onstage.

The ability of young children to remain calm during a crisis is often limited, but a five-year
old girl Savannah from Hancock County, Indiana proved to be an exception, which can be life-
saving.
The incident began with an emergency call to the local 911 dispatcher (调度员) , Jason
Bonham. To his surprise, the person on the other end was a little girl. Despite the gravity of the
situation, her behavior and the clear conversation left a significant impression on Jason and
millions who later heard the call.
Savannah was up late seeing a movie with her father, Frank, and her mother was on a
business trip. It was during the movie night that she heard disturbing sounds from the kitchen.
With their pet dog barking ceaselessly, Savannah went to investigate.
In the kitchen, Savannah found her father on the floor, clutching (捂着) his chest. She was
terrified but remembered her parents’ advice about emergency situations. Her father was unable to
speak, indicating he was in critical condition.
Savannah took the initiative to contact emergency services, dialing 911 from the kitchen
wall phone. Her parents had taught her what to do in such situations, which now proved
invaluable.
Jason, the 911 operator, had been in this job for 11 years but was amazed by Savannah’s
calmness. Despite the challenging circumstances, Jason was able to gather crucial information
about Savannah’s father’s condition. Savannah conveyed her father’s symptoms of difficulty
breathing and chest pains to Jason, which helped identify the emergency as a possible heart
condition.
Jason kept Savannah on the line, distracting her with light conversation while making sure
she was keeping an eye on her dad. Jason asked Savannah to unlock the front door for the
convenience of paramedics' (急救医士) entering. Savannah kept communicating with Jason until
the paramedics arrived. She performed admirably, not only updating Jason about her father’scondition but also taking practical measures, like unlocking the front door for the paramedics,
Before accompanying her father to hospital, Savannah called her mother. And her father
was immediately taken into surgery the moment they reached the hospital.

“Annie, I bet you know, right? You’re the star student, so why don’t you show us?” Bruce
taunted(奚落).
Annie was confused. She wasn’t trying to show off. She was just playing table(印度塔不拉
鼓), like everyone else. And why was Bruce being so mean lately? Is it because tab la is a boy’s
thing? She didn’t care that people thought it was a boys’ instrument. Annie knew there was no
such thing. She danced her fingers across the tab la to perform the composition in confusion.
“Ugh!” Annie heard someone groan(嘟哝), and she stopped playing.
“I guess I don’t know it that well after all,” Annie said shyly to the teacher, Mr. White. Her
stomach was doing flip-flops. That wasn’t true. Not even a little. Mr. White’s eyes narrowed. Helooked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind. “The recital(演奏会)is next
week, everyone. Keep practicing. I will be announcing who will get to perform onstage with me at
my next concert!” Annie had dreamed of a moment like that. She wanted to win the opportunity,
but she needed to sort things straight with Bruce first.
As the class was dismissed, Annie hurried over to Bruce. When she finally made eye
contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Annie
overheard Bruce whispering to one of his friends. “People are only interested because she’s the
only girl in tab la class and they want her to feel special. She’s not that good—” Annie was angry.
She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn’t relax. Her
heart was pounding:
“It’s not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes
too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more.”
“If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me.”
“I don’t want to see a tab la or hear a tab la or play a tab la EVER AGAIN!!” Annie yelled
at the mirror. It was quiet for a moment. She believed it was one of her darkest days ever.

As a child I dreamed of becoming a scientist. I mapped my life out: I’d study neuroscience
at a top university and proceed to do a master’s, a Ph. D., and a postdoc, all of which would
somehow lead to a prosperous career. But it didn’t go quite as planned.
During the research part of my master’s degree, I found myself putting in 8 hours of work
per day with little enthusiasm. I wasn’t ready to let go of my dream, however. I decided to apply to
Ph. D.programs. After numerous rejections, I got accepted into a program in Zurich.
I was relieved, but I also doubted whether I was the right person for the job. Within 2 years,
it became clear that I was failing to master the skills I needed, and I found the work no more
satisfying than during my master’s. My mental health worsened. I would lie in bed wide awake for
hours. I struggled with whether to quit: If I gave up, all the years I had devoted to academia would
turn out a waste of time. Then a friend noticed my mental and physical exhaustion. “Is this you.
George? ” he asked one day. After hearing those words, all of my hesitation about quitting
disappeared. I resigned the next day.
It felt liberating to be honest with myself about a path that wasn't meant for me. Still, I
needed to decide what to do next. I thought about a lecture I had recently attended. “If only we
could get the general public to feel the awe (敬畏) that I’m feeling!” I remember thinking at the
time. That got me wondering whether writing and communicating about science might be a good
profession.
I looked around and came across exceptional news features in science magazines, written
by individuals without a Ph. D.I began to think I could have a career writing about general
science and the work of scientists and researchers.

On a sunny afternoon, my friend Ollie and I were enjoying skatcboarding at our local park.
Our mood was light until Olle spotted a poster for the upcoming Harvest Fair. The idea of
attending it was thrilling, but the ticket price of $50 quickly iced our enthusiasm.
While we were thinking over the cost, our attention was drawn to the list of attractions.
Among the various activities, we noticed that our favorite band - Eagles was going to perform. We
couldn’t help but break into singing our favorite song by them. What added to our excitement was
the pie contest in the poster, a delightful reminder of our shared memory. It used to be the most
popular event in our community. But thinking of the expensive tickets, which seemed to be a
shadow over our excitement, we all sighed. Then I suggested going to my parents’ store to see if
they could help.
Upon arriving, my dad told us he had some good news, showing some tickets to us. They
were the very ones we had seen in the poster! My dad explained that his old partner had made a
request to hang a poster here for the Harvest Fair, and in return, he offered us free passes. Much to
my delight, there were six tickets for five people in our family and an extra one for my friend! The
news was like a breath of fresh air, bringing unexpected joy into our day. We could all set out to
experience the fair together, no one missing out.Just then, Mrs. Smith, out awesome 80-year-old neighbor, walked unsteadily towards us.“I just
saw the poster in your window. How I used to love going to fairs!” She paused, with her eyes
dropping before she continued. “But it’s hard for me to get around now, and tickets cost so much

Mrs. Green in Room 301
The notice was posted next to the mailboxes in the apartment building I’d just moved into
in Brooklyn, New York. “A Mitzvah for Mrs. Green,” it read. “Sign up to drive Mrs. Green in
Room 301 from her chemotherapy(化疗) treatments twice a month.”
Since I wasn’t a driver, I couldn’t add my name, but the word “mitzvah” lingered in my
thoughts. It means “to do a good deed”. According to my grandmother, it also had another
meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she noticed how shy I was
about letting people do things for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but
sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.”
Three weeks later, on the night of taking my final exam, the snow was falling steadily forhours. Pride would not let me knock on a door and say, “It’s a 10-minute ride by car but a long
wait for the bus, and it’s a 30-minute bus ride, so could you possibly give me a lift to school?” So
I trudged (艰难地走) to the bus stop. For an hour, I prayed desperately that a bus would come.
Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home and I seemed to hear Grandma’s
whisper: Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah. That idea had never really made sense to
me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, there wasn’t a soul on the street.
But as I pushed the door of my apartment building open, I found myself face to face with a
woman at the mailbox. In that split second, desperation overcame pride, “Could you possibly give
me a lift?” I hurriedly said, feeling quite awkward and uncomfortable, “I never ask anybody for a
lift, but...” An odd look crossed the woman’s face, and I added, “Oh! I live in Room 401. I moved
in recently!”

in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my
freshman year, I had a dislike to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I
didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be
alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever
experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day.
He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel
good, as if I had the chance to succeed, although I still hated the subject itself. From then on, I had
spent countless hours studying, but with so many difficulties to cover, I was overwhelmed. The
pressure of the subject was weighing heavily on my shoulders. I had always been a hardworking
and dedicated student, but the stress seemed unbearable. No matter how much effort I put into
math, I couldn’t seem to keep up. As the mid-term exams approached, I felt a sense of dread. The
fear of failure consumed me, and I began to doubt myself again.
One day after school, I found myself walking alongside Mr. A on the empty playground. He
could tell that something was bothering me, and he asked if everything was alright. I hesitated for
a moment, unsure of whether to share my struggles.

Joey, once again, had taken his entire lunch plate and mixed all the food together. He did
something like this pretty much every day at camp. “It’s an experiment,” he told the other
campers. “Like what we do in class. It’s fun.” Joey was crazy about experiments, which usually
consisted of taking one or more things, and combining them somehow, just like mixing all his
food together. Joey would usually take a bite as part of the experiment, and would try to get the
other kids at the table to try it too. However, almost nobody ever would like to. Joey’s experiments
almost always tasted absolutely horrible.
Joey offered a bite of his unique lunch to the kids at his table. ‘Eric, the only one who
sometimes liked Joey’s experiments, decided to give it a try. But even he couldn’t eat more than a
bite, which meant the table would lose their “wasted food challenge” —AGAIN.
As part of camp lunch, all the tables weighed their leftovers at the end of the meal. One by
one, the tables would line up, empty their plates into a garbage can (垃圾桶), and then the garbage
can would be weighed. Whichever table had the least amount of wasted food got to be first in line
the next day at lunch. Whichever table had the most amount of wasted food had to stay and wash
all the dishes. Each table had the same amount of campers, to be fair. The tables were each named
after a different kind of tree. Joey’s table was the Scrub Pine table. Scrub Pine table had lost so
many times that everyone laughed at them.
Everyone blamed Joey. He was always the one with the most leftovers. But Joey insisted it
wasn’t his fault. He had a trick. Before each weighing, he always mashed up (捣烂) his mixture
into the smallest ball possible. Almost everyone else’s plate was littered with uneaten food. Joey
just had a ball in the corner of the plate.
Scrub Pine table had already washed dishes four days in a row, and it looked like it wasabout to be five.

I was lying in bed in the dark ready for sleep I got the heart-broken news that my parents
lost their lives in the flight accident. I couldn’t accept the news for a long time, since nobody
would stay with me in the empty house. In the weeks that followed, with depression and grief, I
decided to continue seeing the counselor on my own. One day, he gave me a homework
assignment: I was to write down a list of one hundred life goals in my rest of my life.
It took me two weeks to complete the task. When I finally handed over the list, I was
instructed me to pick one goal and take two small steps toward it before the following week.
Looking over my list of one hundred goals, I chose. “Fly an airplane.” I bought a flying magazine.
That was one step. Then I went to a local airport and arranged with a flight instructor to take a
low-cost “Discovery Flight.”And so began my journey to become a pilot, starting from scratch. No knowledge. No
experience. When I bought $300 worth of textbooks, I began to question what I’d gotten myself
into. Then came the fear that accompanies every new challenge thrown at one while flying.
That’s when I realized I needed to adjust my mental attitude. Somewhere along the way, I
had read that people should tell themselves they were the best at whatever they were attempting to
do. I took this to heart. With that well-hidden confidence. I sought the help of flight instructors and
ground instructors. The instructors encouraged me to believe that I was born to be a super pilot
and just to recover all this “lost” ability. No way would I ever miss a flying training class.
Eventually, the time came for my first flight check with the chief instructor, an airline pilot
with 11,000 hours. As if I wasn’t nervous enough already, one of my classmates told me that he’d
recently been through the same routine. Not only did he fail but he actually cried. But passing the
test is a must to get the pilot certification.

My wife and I live in an apartment. Because of the circumstances, we allow our elderly
widowed (丧偶的) neighbour Mary to use our Wi-Fi connection. We’ve always gotten along
really well with Mary, and her kids and grandkids live on the other side of the country because of
work or other pursuits, so we’ve become a sort of “apartment family” together.
My wife just bought a new phone after her old phone crashed. After getting her new phone
connected to the Internet, I went into our account to remove her old phone. When I saw the list of
connected devices, there were four devices I didn’t recognize. I immediately changed the
password to our connection and removed all of the devices except my own computer.
My wife and I got our devices set up, and since Mary was out shopping, we set a reminder
to go over and help her reconnect when she got home. About ten minutes after I changed the
password, I started hearing a lot of banging and shouting from the hallway. I opened the door and
saw the man who lived across the hall from Mary pounding on her door.
I told him Mary was out right now. Then he said, “My kids were surfing online, and Mary’s
Internet just went out. I’m trying to get it fixed before my kids throw an even bigger tantrum (发
I was surprised, “What do you mean, Mary’s Internet?” He replied, “She said I could use
her Internet when my kids come over.”
“Mary doesn’t have her own Wi-Fi.”
“Sure, she does. I saw her password for it when I dropped off her mail yesterday.”
I knew that was not true. Mary didn’t ask him to collect her mail because if it was big
enough that she couldn’t carry it up herself, she would have asked my wife or me to help her. That
was mail theft. Finally, Mary didn’t have her own Wi-Fi; she used our Wi-Fi. And since my wife
and I did not give him permission, and Mary would never give him permission without our
permission. He was stealing our Wi-Fi.

Seeing the picture of Kelly and I holding teddy bears with great joy, I couldn’t help
recalling the sweet memory. A few years ago, before Christmas, my dad placed a large box in his
grocery store for people to donate toys for children in need. Kelly, my best friend came over to
help with the wrapping. Knowing that our efforts would bring joy to so many children during the
holiday season, we thought it was a rewarding experience.
As we worked, we shared moments of laughter and joy. After a short while, we had almost
finished wrapping all the toys with just one little teddy bear left. Looking at it, I said, “It is the
sweetest! It reminds me of my teddy bear. I sold all my little kid stuff at our garage sale when we
moved. But now I’m really missing it!”
Kelly came to see it and shared. “I have a sad teddy bear story too. When my little brother
was a baby, I let him play with my Rosy Bear, but he refused to give her back. Ever.” After our
chat, we knew both of us had a special story with a teddy bear.
Right then, my dad entered the room and exclaimed. “Wow, great wrapping job! The kids
are going to be thrilled when opening these presents.”“They definitely will. Maybe we both want to be the one who can get the teddy bear. I can
just imagine how delighted a kid would be to unwrap this sweet teddy bear.” said Kelly. We
laughed, gazing at the perfectly wrapped bears.
My mom, joining in the laughter, suggested, “Why don’t you gather at our house next
Saturday for a cookie-decorating party and exchange your Christmas gifts in advance? I’ll prepare
the cookies for you.” “Good idea! I will enjoy the great joy of unwrapping the gift.” I said
cheerfully. Hearing what we said, Kelly’s eyes lit up, saying, “Count me in!”
“All right, girls,” said my dad. “We need to do the toy-loading work now. We have to drop
off all these presents before five o’clock!”
