cried“Help!”Lying awake in the dark, wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. Shewanted to hold Tom and tell him how much she loved him.
为了突出主题,学生可以在续写中运用 think about, dream of, miss, hug, burst into
Holding Tom tightly, Jane said“I love you so much!”
When I face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephone lens.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard,
and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.
With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake
sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread. The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was
surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and
pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him.“Man, that’s a big dog!”he thought.
But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly
catching up with him.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on forquite a long time. After she had climbed to a
high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest
and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the
late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven blanket spread
out upon the ground just for us.

Thoughts don’t have to be “real” or “true” to create failure or success in our lives. They just
have to be believed.
Tim had always been weak in math. In high school, he had failed algebra (代数) three times
before he eventually passed. Gradually, he began to accept it as an unchangeable fact. Then in
college, the biggest problem that stood between him and his degree came in junior year— he had
to take statistics, about which all the horror stories were circulating. One day he was called into his professor’s office. Professor Fine, a short, stout man with
thinning hair and a forever smile, sat on the front of his desk reading Tim’s record. “My son, this
is your lucky day.” he looked up and repeated, “This is indeed your lucky day. You’re going to be
great in stats (统计数据).” He had a huge smile on his face.
“How’s that, Doc?” Tim asked.
The professor shrugged. “You have the second kind of mind. Listen. First kind of minds are
the kids who do well in algebra but don’t get stats. But second kind of mind is like yours. Kids
who don’t get algebra understand statistics with no problem. They are different kinds of math that
take different kinds of mind. Since you failed algebra three times, I’d guess you’d get an A in
stats.” He raised his hands over his head.
“Really?” Tim asked, confused.
Professor Fine jumped to the floor and looked square (诚实的) in his eyes. “Really, and I’m
happy for you. You never gave up, and now it’s going to pay off.” Then he shook Tim’s hand and
slapped his back with great enthusiasm.
Tim was wild with joy at the news.
After that day, each time they met, there was a smile of approval on Professor Fine’s face
and an enthusiastic handshake. Eventually, Tim began to tell his friends how well he expected to
do in statistics.

Mrs. Moore was an old artist. Her husband passed away years ago and she lived alone with
her cat Taffy. She did three things every day—painting, baking and petting her beloved cat, among
which baking was the part my sister Jennifer and I liked best. Whenever the mouth-watering smell
got over the fence, we could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the
fence. To return this favor, Dad would cut the grass in her front yard and help repair the water
pipes.
One day, Dad eventually put his idea of building a tree house for us in our back yard into
action. Dad got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with a beautiful
red roof. It was a great place for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have
fun and talk about our girlish matters.
One morning, we went there only to find Taffy messing up everything there. Both of us
were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. So
we begged Dad to talk about the issue with Mrs. Moore.
After the talk, Mrs. Moore immediately went to the tree house. She was shocked to see the
mess. She said she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated with a tree house and
promised to deal with the problem immediately. But to our disappointment, the cat could still find
ways to climb over the fence and get into our tree house.
In despair, Mrs. Moore bought a ready-made tree house from an on-line store and had it
fixed up in her garden. The tree house was bigger than ours. It was in the shape of a bird nest with
bright colors of purple and orange. Mrs. Moore put Taffy’s toys and food in it to make sure the cat
would be happy to move in and return our tree house to us.

Once upon a time, there lived a very lazy man named Harman. All day long, he would
almost lie on his bed in the backyard and would not lift a finger to do any work.
One afternoon, a sage (智者) was meditating (冥想) under a tree near Harman’s home. As
usual, Harman was lying on his bed when suddenly he spotted a snake with its head raised at the
meditating man. Alarmed, Harman quickly ran over to kill it. The sage was saved and promised, “I
will grant you a boon (恩惠), young man. Tell me, what is it that you want?”
Hearing this, Harman expressed his wish to get wealthy within a short time, without having
to work much. “Very well,” said the sage. “Beginning from tonight, each night, you shall have a
dream describing the troubles of someone, the solution to which will be visible to you alone. If
you save the concerned person, I am sure you will be rewarded.” Harman thanked the sage and
went home.
He told his wife, Shanta, about what had happened. However, his wife was doubtful.
“Come on, dear! The vital way to become rich is through hard work.”
That night Harman dreamt of the King. He saw that his adviser had stolen bags of gold.
When Harman woke up in the morning, he immediately set out for the King’s palace and helpedthe King find the gold. The King rewarded Harman handsomely with a rich sum of money.
Another time Harman dreamt of a rich landlord whose daughter was seriously ill. Harman
saw a particular plant in the landlord’s garden, whose leaves would help in curing the girl. The
next morning, Harman requested some leaves from the landlord and told him how to use them to
cure his daughter. The landlord’s daughter was saved soon with the leaves. Harman was once
again given a handsome reward.
Days passed. Harman continued to have dreams every night and act upon them in the
morning. Soon, he became a rich man in the village. However, his health worsened and he was in
low spirits. Since he dreamed of people’s troubles every night, he didn’t have a sound sleep.

To my mother, the four basic food groups are meat, milk, grain and coleslaw (凉拌菜丝)—pieces of raw cabbage, carrot, onion, etc. mixed with sauce. And she always thinks highly of her
handmade coleslaw. In our house, the coleslaw always goes on the table in a bowl.
I love Mom's coleslaw, but there was a time I distinctly remember when it caused absolute
panic within me.
Early in the first grade, I raced home from school with a collection of papers handed to me
by my class teacher Mary. As I rushed through the front door, I immediately ran to the kitchen
where Mom was making chicken noodle soup. Holding the papers, I begged, “Read them to me,
Mom, please!”
Slowly she started reading aloud. I smiled with delight as she read to me what seemed an
almost endless list of exciting adventures waiting for me in the coming year. And then, it
happened.
“It's a tradition for a mother to bring a homemade treat for the class to share on her child's
birthday,” she read. “It needn't be anything fancy, just something you enjoy making.” The words
floated through the air in painfully slow motion. The phrase “just something you enjoy making”
kept appearing inside my head.
Until my birthday in April, I lived in fear that Mom would arrive at school with a cart full
of her coleslaw for everyone to share. I imagined the classmates laughing at me, “Who would
bring coleslaw on his birthday? Oh, stupid Tom!”
When I left for school on the morning of my birthday, Mom was making cakes. I had relief
and was glad she would bring the cakes. But then, I found there were a great many raw vegetables
in the fridge. “Will you also make coleslaw for me, Mom?” I asked, shocked.

My brother Matthew was becoming a teenager. Now everything was changing. He spent
most of his time indoors talking on the phone. He refused to dive after the football for fear of
getting his jeans dirty when we played catch. Yet I kept expecting to return to the past when I was
his hero, his big brother and his best friend. It was tough facing the fact that I was no longer the
center of my brother’s universe, and I worried about where I fit in his new life.
I discovered the answer during Matthew’s seventh-grade year, when he attended a summer
camp and I served as a volunteer.
He was usually the center of attention, blowing straw wrappers at all of his friends and
showing off football skills. He was the kid everybody knew and loved. It was happy for him, but I
barely saw my brother the whole week. I felt being cast aside like an old shoe. I was the one who
had taught Matthew how to blow the wrappers of straws off and play football. I had been with him
for every major moment in his life until now, and suddenly it was as if none of that mattered.
Then, on the last evening, Matthew called me as I was leaving. “Chris! We’re gonnia play
football. You have to come!” I blinked in surprise. “Are you sure? Won’t embarrass you?” I asked.
“It doesn’t matter. Just play.” he replied, smiling.
I followed Matthew to the football field. When his cool new friends saw me, they laughed,
“I thought you were getting a real player!” one of the guys shouted, eyes widening with disbelief.
“He’s my brother,” was Marthew’s reply. “And he’s really good!”
I wound up on the opposite team from Matthew. Still, I wanted to score a hundred touchdowns to
prove to my brother that his faith in me wasn’t misplaced. Unfortunately, I never got that chance. The guys on my team simply refused to pass the ball to an older man. Exactly they wouldn’t let

The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend.
On the way, I decided to buy some vegetables in the nearby greengrocer’s. Since there was still
thin ice on the road, I took a glance at the back mirror to make sure no people or vehicles came
close, and slowly turned the wheel to the right. Then out of my expectation, my car knocked into
an electric bike, giving out a loud noise of metal clash. I came back to myself and saw out of the
window screen a teenager lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden, a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on extremely
hot and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the
only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream.
Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I
jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I waspushed towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground
before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn’t get hurt but still couldn’t rise to my feet. The
motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, hurried to check on me, "Are you okay?
Your leg? Your foot?"
"I am all right, but..."I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for "big"
sum of money for compensation (赔偿). Instead, he just let me go despite his wife’s protests.
Guilty as I was, I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for pardoning a
silly kid who had made such a big mistake by mistake.

I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all academic subjects, I
was afraid of physical education. Even kids in the neighborhood would laugh at me that my feet
couldn’t leave the ground when I ran. Their words embarrassed me. At school, whenever theteacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class would choose me as their partner
or teammate. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that if it was not for a sports meet in my middle school. By
mistake, my name was put on the list of women’s 1,500 meters race. By the time I knew it, it was
too late to change.
In despair, I asked Mary, my deskmate who just moved to our neighborhood with her
parents and was assigned to our class, whether she could help me. She declined, “Sorry, I couldn’t
run that race in your place. I have already signed up for the same event.”
I nearly broke down. 1,500 meters! Running against the best runners in front of the whole
school! It would be the worst thing I’d ever dreamed of!
“Don’t worry,” Mary said, patting me on my shoulder. “You still have time to catch up
because there is about one month before the sports meet starts. Besides, it is cool to run for our
class!”
I knew this was not just for myself, but for my class. But to me, running 1,500 meters was
like climbing Mount Everest for an inexperienced climber. I even had no idea how to start my
preparation.
“I have an idea,” she said as if she could read my mind. “We can do training together each
afternoon after class.”
During the training, whenever I wanted to give up, I would see Mary running right beside

Erik, was playing happily in the backyard. While playing, Anna said to the kids, “I am going to
plant something in the garden. Who would like to help me?”
“What are you going to plant, Grandma?” asked Julie. “I like pleasant, bright-colored
roses.”
“But I like lively, big, yellow sunflowers!” said Fred.
“Well, I’m going to plant some vegetables so that we can have fresh vegetables to eat when
they are ready,” said Anna.
“How long does that take?” asked Erik. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially
tomatoes.
“It will take several months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Anna. The kids were
surprised.
“Several months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked
Julie. “Why not just go to the store and buy them?”
“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it
yourself?” replied Anna. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”
“I’ll help you, Grandma,” offered Erik. He put down the basketball and went to look at the
gardening tools Anna had laid out. “What should we do first?” Fred and Julie came over to have a
look, too.
Firstly, Anna taught Erik how to use a travel (小铲子) to dig rows of small holes for the
seeds. Next, she showed Julie how to pour the seeds into each hole carefully. And then it was
Fred’s job to cover up the holes with soil little by little. Finally, Julie wrote the vegetable names on
sticks that Erik pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds wehave planted,” said Anna.
After planting everything, the kids took turns in filling up the watering pot so that Anna
could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
“From now on, we just water them a little each day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll
have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Anna.

In the small town of Riverdale, life was never easy for 17-year-old Emily. Her family had
faced financial struggles since her father’s business went down, leaving them in debt. To make
matters worse, Emily's mother had fallen ill, adding medical bills to their list of concerns. Despite
these challenges, Emily refused to let adversity define her. She worked tirelessly after school to
support her family and kept up with her studies, determined to secure a scholarship for college.
One day, as she was browsing the internet for potential scholarship opportunities, Emily
came across an article about a local charity event that offered a full scholarship to the winner of a
talent competition. Without hesitation, she decided to enter the talent competition. Emily was an
accomplished pianist, having practiced piano for hours every day throughout her childhood. Shepoured her heart into practicing for the competition, hoping it would be her ticket to a better
future.
On the day of the competition, Emily felt a mix of nerves and excitement. She watched as
other contestants showcased their talents—some sang, others danced, and a few of the contestants
played instruments. When it was her turn, Emily took a deep breath and began to play. Her fingers
moved gracefully over the keys, and the melody filled the room. She was nearly absorbed in the
pieces that she had practiced hundreds of times. As the last note echoed, the audience erupted in
applause.
The judges discussed for a while before finally announcing the winner. To Emily’s dismay,
she didn’t win the scholarship. The judges praised her performance but said they were looking for
something “different” this year. Emily left the event feeling defeated, wondering when she would
ever escape her difficult circumstances.
Despite not winning the scholarship, Emily realized that sometimes, when one door closes,
another opens. Her perseverance and determination had led her to a path she never could have
imagined.

I hurriedly made my way through the busy airport, my mind focusing on the adventure that
awaited me at my destination. I had been looking forward to this trip for months and had packed
everything I needed for my much-anticipated painting trip. Brushes, canvases(画板), and a
column of watercolor paints - my most cherished companions on this creative journey - were
carefully placed in my carry-on luggage.
As I approached the security checkpoint, a sense of unease began to settle within me. I
couldn’t help thinking that I must have forgotten something. I checked my passport and air ticket.
Everything was in their place. Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat, and I realized I had forgotten
about the strict rules on liquids in carry-on baggage. I felt a sense of panic as the realization
dawned upon me - I would have to part ways with my beloved painting supplies.
Unwillingly, I handed over my paints to the stern-faced (面无表情的) security officer,
knowing that they were victims of my carelessness. I felt as if my creative spirit and good mood
for the trip had been swept away in a gust of wind. I couldn't help complaining to him about how
important those paints were to me and how much I had been looking forward to this trip. The
officer’s straight face provided no comfort as he informed me that I could collect my items upon
my return in a week.
Days passed as I silently counted the minutes until I would be reunited with my artistic
companions. On the day of my long-awaited return, my heart fluttered with nervous anticipation.
As I exited the airplane and made my way to the baggage claim area, a familiar face caught my
eye. Amongst the sea of strangers, a security officer stood, holding a package that resembled my
beloved art supplies. My eyes widened in disbelief, my steps quickening with each step. Could it
be possible that he had gone through the trouble of saving my cherished materials? As I reached
the security officer, he met my gaze (凝视) with an unexpected smile.

I still remember my first day of school in the USA.It was on that day that I got to know a
wonderful teacher, Mrs. McDonalds.
In 2001, my family and I moved to the USA from India. I was placed at 6th grade in
elementary school. The first day of school for any student can be hard, but even harder for a shy
student whose spoken English is poor. Finding the class location according to the map was quite
hard for a 6th grader, especially for a student that5 s in a new country and a new school like me.
After a long time, I found that I was lost. I stood there helplessly, waiting for someone like an
angel to come.
Then, a nice lady teacher came and I showed her my class number. Somehow, the nice lady
named Mrs. McDonalds turned out to be my headteacher and could speak a little Hindi. She
realized that I needed help. So she comforted me and took me to class.
The first day of school was about the teachers introducing themselves and going over the
class rules, and every student introducing themselves to the class. Mrs. McDonalds started with
talking about herself and also about what we were going to do that school year. After her it was thestudents’ turn, one by one each student stood up and told the whole class their name, their interests
and favorite things to do. I anxiously wondered what I should say when it was my turn. Then all of
a sudden everyone started staring at me. When Mrs. McDonalds called me, my mind went blank. I
was too nervous to say a word. Then I stood quietly while the whole class started to laugh because
of the awkward situation. Mrs. McDonalds asked them to keep quiet, looked at me with tender
eyes and asked my name and hobby in Hindi. What I could hear at that moment was only the word
“name”, so I quickly told her my name.
After the embarrassing self-introduction, the teacher started to talk about our first
assignment.

Many of us come across certain situations that make us laugh in the future. The similar
thing happened to me on 12, July 2010. It was rainy season. My parents needed to go to the nearby
city to attend a marriage ceremony. They decided to keep me at home because I too shouldunderstand housekeeping in the absence of parents. I agreed on their thought with full confidence.
This incident made me completely alone at home. Therefore, I got complete freedom to enjoy the
cartoon shows on TV and many other fun activities. I looked outside the window of my house. It
was raining heavily. Suddenly the electricity supply went off.
I was a little scared but the words of my parents encouraged me to face the situation.
Unexpectedly, I heard someone knocking at the door of my house. I went near to the door and
stole a look through it. No one was there! Then I opened the door to make sure.
I have the habit of watching horror movies. This incident created the thoughts of ghosts and
evils in my mind. I felt that a ghost might be willing to enter my house. I was completely shocked.
I lit the candles in my room. Again, I heard the knocking sound. But this time, I didn’t dare to
open the door. Instead, I preferred lying on the bed and wrapping myself with blankets.
The electricity supply started after almost one hour. I speedily turned the TV on and played
devotional songs. I switched on the lights of all rooms. I am a curious person who loves science.
My curiosity brought me to check out the incident. So I went near to the door and opened it.

It was the first day of the new school year. Sylvia entered the music room at a high school.
The 65-year-old music teacher was known for being strict in class. Many students were afraid of
her and not interested in this class. They attended music class only because they needed the credit.
But Sylvia took her job seriously.
One day, she walked to the piano in the corner and started leading the students into a song
to get them warmed up. And she quickly called out anyone who tried to joke around and punished
them, which might explain why some students didn’t like her.
Soon enough, her class was almost over and one student asked curiously, “What do you like
to listen to at home?” “Surely, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky,” another student laughed, making
some others laugh. “I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you listen to
nowadays. But I prefer to listen to classic music,” Sylvia replied, smiling at the kids.
Some returned the smile and started asking about some singers and bands. But the bell rang
before she could answer all their questions and they had to leave. However, it seemed like the fear
in her students had been relieved a bit that day. And she was hopeful they would warm up to her,
even with her strict ways. Soon enough, the students got used to her and started taking her lessons
more seriously.
However, in the middle of the school year, Sylvia’s husband suddenly died. And she wasn’t
in the mood for work afterwards. The school allowed her to stay at home for two weeks. At home,
Sylvia was sad and hopeless. She didn’t even listen to music anymore.
Before long, her students learned she had lost her husband and that she was sad. Soon, the
students decided to practice playing certain music that could be in memory of her husband and
cheer her up. When Sylvia returned to their class, they’d surprise her by playing the music.

Austin Riley is a race car driver. He has been drawing crowds to the race track for years.
But his rise to fame isn’t just being fast on the speedway. He’s breaking barriers on the track for
those with disabilities. Riley has autism (自闭症). Simple tasks like tying his shoes are extremely
complicated for him, but when you put him in a race car — a complex, delicate piece of
machinery — he’ll blow your mind.
I first met Riley and his father Jason at the local karting (卡丁车运动) track in 2014. I still
remember how excited Riley was to have me and my cameraman there filming his every move.
He was a karting car racer back then. He could barely talk to me, let alone look at me. However,
even though Riley was quiet and shy, I knew he was going to be something big.
The karting track is where Riley’s racing care er began. His dad just wanted to give him
something to focus his energy on. Riley has always loved cars. He has been enthusiastic about
them since he started to learn to walk. So why not try karting? The minute Riley hit the gas, he
was attracted. Little did Riley and his father realize this was going to change their lives forever.
In Riley’s mind, everything moves fast. Slowing things down makes things difficult and
frustrating. But the minute Riley slid into that karting car, everything went well. He’d found his
calling and it put him on the podium (领奖台), so many times that he would need a separate roomjust for his trophies (奖杯).
Riley’s journey on the track soon took him from fast karting cars to really fast cars. He
became the first person with autism in Canada to get his race car licence. It opened up the track for
Riley to drive in the big leagues. Riley was now racing across North America, making the podium
almost every time. He was an impressive force on the track, but an even more impressive person
off the track.

Once upon a time, there was a naughty (淘气的) and curious little boy named Jack.
Growing up in the city, he had always been fascinated by the countryside and all its wonders. So
when his mother decided to take him to visit his grandmother in the village during one summer,
Jack was overjoyed.
As soon as they arrived, Jack’s eyes widened with excitement at the sight of the old-
fashioned spinning (纺纱) wheel and waterwheel in the yard. But it was the large geese (鹅) in thefenced enclosure that truly seized his attention. Their white feathers, long necks, and distinctive
cackles (嘎嘎叫) were unlike anything he had ever seen before.
Eager to explore, Jack approached the fence and reached out to gently tap one of the geese
on its head. He laughed at his own playfulness, but little did he know that his actions would have
unintended consequences.
The goose, feeling threatened and annoyed, let out a loud squawk and charged towards
Jack. Frightened and shocked, Jack moved backwards, tripping over his own feet and falling onto
the ground. The goose continued to pursue him, its sharp beak (嘴) coming dangerously close to
his face.
Just as the situation seemed terrible, Jack’s grandmother rushed to his rescue. She quickly
grabbed a broom and managed to scare the angry goose away, saving Jack from potential harm.
Breathless and shaken, Jack sat on the ground, realizing the gravity of his action.
His grandmother sat down beside him and gently explained that animals, even seemingly
harmless ones like geese, could attack if they felt threatened. She reminded Jack that it was
important to treat all creatures with kindness and respect, regardless of their size or appearance.
Feeling ashamed and regretful, Jack apologized to the goose for his thoughtless behaviour.
From that day on, he made a conscious effort to be more mindful of how his action could affect
others, both human and animal alike. He learned that true bravery wasn’t about being fearless, but
about facing your fears and making amends (补偿) when you were wrong.
