It was the day of the big cross-country run.Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线) through thick evergreen forest. I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old.His usual big toothy smile was absent today.I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run. What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event! I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened.“I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably.“I gave him the choice to run or not,and let him decide.” I bit back my frustration(懊恼).I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted,I turned to find him coming towards me,his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid.He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.It just took him longer—that’s all.David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children,he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school,I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination. We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. David,I (a special education teacher),the coach 时间:on the day of the big cross-country run 地点:at the starting line 起因:David had a brain disease and he was worried that students from other schools might laugh at him. 经过:Though David practiced hard,he decided not to take part in the cross-country run. 2.理清文章三大线索 时间线:the day of the big cross-country run→finally→then→after making sure that David could run if he wanted 情节线:选手们在起跑线前热身→David一个人站在远离跑道的篱笆前→我询问David和教 练为什么放弃比赛→我非常了解David面对的挑战并为他的坚强感到自豪。 We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.With silence hanging heavily in the air,he ducked down his head.It seemed that he wanted to join the run from the ①语言风格与原文一致,侧重 bottom of his heart. So I patted him on the shoulder and 动作和心理描写; said,“You want to run, right?” Upset and hesitant,he ②丰富的动作类动词(短语): nodded slowly. To encourage him,I whispered to him that he ducked down, patted, would definitely do a good job since he had practiced so nodded, whispered to,wiped hard.Hearing these words,he raised his head, with his eyes out, gazed at,crossed 等; wet.I gave him a big thumb-up,which made him gather his ③丰富的形容词与副词: courage and decided to run.He wiped out his tears and stood heavily, upset, hesitant, up,straightening his small body and moving through the slowly, definitely, worried, crowds. determined, finally等; I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other ④高级句式:With silence runners. When he set his foot on the line,I was worried that hanging heavily in the air是 other children would laugh at him, since so many kids gazed at with复合结构作状语; him with curious eyes. However,so determined was David that Hearing these words是现在分 he ignored everything around him, only watching 词短语作时间状语;so forward. When the whistle rang,he tried his best to run as fast determined was David that...为 as possible.Though the cross-country run was tough,he made 倒装结构;It was his brave it.To our surprise, when he crossed the finishing line, the heart and strong faith that...为强 crowds burst into applause.David gave me a bear hug, revealing his usual toothy smile. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire.Jenna panicked.Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now.Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning.Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well. As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. John picked it up.His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck! The boys and girls in John’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind.Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize. Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! John looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other.Miss Smith was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning. John decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would be most likely to be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping. He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket.Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat.“Finders are keepers, right?”he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out.On the one hand,he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it.Somebody must have lost it.But on the other hand,he did need this extra ticket for his great plan! John stared at the blank name line for a moment. “John,I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Smith said. John stared at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn’t be so great if he won with a ticket that didn’t belong to him.So he walked up to his teacher.“Miss Smith,I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase.I think the one who lost it will look for it.And these are mine,” he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him. “John,I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Smith said.John was amazed and wondered why.Miss Smith smiled and signed to the class to quiet down,“John handed in the golden ticket he had just found.I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause.John happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn’t.After all, making the right choice did make him feel great! Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky.She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird. When Jenny was in the fourth grade, one day,her teacher asked the students to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up.She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However,to her surprise, her paper came back with an “F” on it.The teacher told her it was nothing but a “fairy tale”,which could never become true.Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad.In her heart, she didn’t want to accept that a girl couldn’t become a pilot. But as the years went by,Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her.“Girls can’t become airline pilots; never have, never will. You’re crazy.” Finally,Jenny gave up her dream. However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day,Mrs Marsha asked all the students to think about the question:“What will you do in the future?” At that time,Jenny hesitated for a while. She was worried that she would be laughed at again. But soon she felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream of becoming a pilot right away. The next day,Marsha came into the classroom with a bright smile on her face. The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared. The next day,Marsha came into the classroom with a bright smile on her face. She praised all the students for what they had finished including Jenny.Mrs Marsha told Jenny that her dream was wonderful and she was sure that Jenny would have the abilities and talents to make it come true if she tried her best.Besides, she also encouraged Jenny to keep on trying without worrying about others’ opinions.Hearing the words,Jenny felt a relief from her heart and made up her mind to study hard to realize her dream. The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared.Encouraged and full of passion, Jenny began to pursue her dream with all her effort. In the following ten years, she studied hard and never gave up even when she was faced with all kinds of difficulties.Eventually,Jenny became a pilot of a famous airline company, realizing her dream of flying in the sky like a bird.Allof us may meet different difficulties on our way to success, but if we keep on trying without giving up,we will make it come true. When Dr.Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class,I secretly hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with.Above all,I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate(命运) would have it,Dr.Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid. I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there.I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone. Needless to say,I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off,but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse. The project required each team to develop a hypothesis(假说),set up an experiment to test the hypothesis,do the statistical analysis and present the findings.Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students. When my teammate and I met to discuss our project,I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me.I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out.I decided to stick to it no matter what. After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers.I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic. We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. 在所给的文本信息里,已经为下文续写内容埋下了伏笔,就是文章的最后一段“After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers.I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.” (1)Did we share our ideas with each other? (2)Would that boy like to accept my opinions? (3)What should I do when he ignored my advice? (4)How would I feel when he ignored my advice? (1)How would I feel when I got the news that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease? One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case.He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits.I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it.We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr.Henderson was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project,we also learned the significance of teammates.Just as the saying goes, one person can go far,but a group of persons can travel farther. Two weeks before Christmas,we brought out the boxes of decorations, many of which had been in Polly’s family for ages.Among them was a special box that held an entire gingerbread family(姜饼人).They were real cookies, hung with red ribbons(丝带) and made many years earlier. Every now and then,I or one of my little sisters—Ruth and Sue—would pretend we were going to eat one, knowing that Polly would say,“You’ll break a tooth! They’re so old that they’re rock-hard.” We didn’t really want to eat them, but we enjoyed making fun of Polly. Since we didn’t know how Jake would react to the decorations or the Christmas tree,we were careful to put the decorations up high.Jake sniffed(嗅) the tree a lot. Those first couple of days,Polly caught him starting to lift a leg on the tree twice. But he learned quickly and settled for sniffing from a distance. The weekend before Christmas , Dad and Polly took us to watch the new holiday movie.Excited,we jumped into the car with bags of home-made popcorn, and off we went for a great evening. A few hours later,we returned home, only to find...a terrible mess.It wasn’t the Christmas tree.In fact,we weren’t sure what it was.We stood just inside the door staring at the mess.As itturned out,it was Jake’s bed, which he’d destroyed.Left alone for the first time,he must have gotten bored, attacked it and left it for dead.We didn’t know that the bed was not the only victim. The next morning,we girls were playing in the living room when Ruth let out a sudden cry. “It wasn’t me,” I said,in case anybody thought I’d had a midnight snack of rock- hard decorations. 表面上只是把他自己的床铺弄 乱了,但是文章最后一段最后一句话“We didn’t know that the bed was not the only victim.” (1)What did the girls find while playing the next morning? (2)Was the gingerbread family broken? (3)How was the gingerbread family broken? (4)How did other girls respond to it? (5)Who did they begin to suspect then? (6)How did Jake behave then? (7)Who did they find broke the gingerbread family? The next morning,we girls were playing in the living room when Ruth let out a sudden cry.“Hey,who broke Gingerbread Baby?” Ruth asked. That brought Polly to the living room fast.“Where? Show me!” Ruth pointed at the former baby cookie, which was now just ahead, still tied to the tree by its red ribbon.“Here’s another broken one,” said Sue.It’s Gingerbread Grandpa.Or it was.Now it’s just his head and hat. That caused some inspection, and soon it was clear that all the gingerbread men were now just gingerbread heads. “It wasn’t me,” I said,in case anybody thought I’d had a midnight snack of rock- hard decorations.Quickly,my sisters made denials of their own. Then we girls and Polly all looked at Jake.Until that moment,Jake had been sitting by Dad,looking happy as ever.Suddenly, his posture changed.Guilt spread over his face. With his head bowed a little,he tried not to meet Polly’s eyes, but it was clear what had happened. It was as if he were wearing a sign that said,“I killed an entire gingerbread family.” Teen Becomes a Local Hero When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday,December 18,she likely expected to do more of the same:Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile. In fact, that’s exactly how it started.Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months and so far,it’s been her typical after-school job.The day had been mostly normal—making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush. But a few hours into her shift, things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of her food,Sydney let her know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened. Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney.Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911.Then,she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue. The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class which she’d taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(海姆利克急救法) immediately kicked in.Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries,it wasn’t quite working.Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot. She shouted to that man for assistance. The story has made headlines throughout the country. She shouted to that man for assistance. The man heard Sydney’s cry and rushed over.Sydney briefed him on the situation, and the man did not hesitate to help the woman. He used the same Heimlich maneuver, but harder than Sydney. And happily,it worked this time, after which the woman threw up the food stuck in her throat and began gasping for air,and she was saved. The woman and her daughter thanked Sydney and the man.Sydney was thrilled to have saved the lady. The story has made headlines throughout the country. All the media praised Sydney and the man for their bravery , and how calmly she performed the Heimlich maneuver in an emergency. From this story, people realized that everyone should master the Heimlich maneuver in case someone around them choke,so the media called for schools to train students to master skills of the Heimlich maneuver. Some schools have invited doctors and nurses from the emergency department of hospitals to explain the operation of the Heimlich maneuver to students, which has been well received by parents and the community. Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat,“I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh.“I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.” I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all.I love art projects! In fact,I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night.I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing. I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home,I threw the entire craft box(手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, thetelephone rang. It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them.I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abuela’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year! I had no choice.I had to go.Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o’clock when I finally got home.I planned to work on my project right after we ate.But then another interruption hit me. Just as I was about to start,Dad said,“Joanna,it’s your turn to do the dishes.” Looking at the big “F” on my paper,I started to reflect on what I had done these days. Just as I was about to start,Dad said,“Joanna,it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me,leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules,so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clink of dishes was disquieting sound from hell to me,reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet,I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten.Without much time left,I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day,I handed in it nervously. Along the way,I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home , I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers.Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards. I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying.I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came.I was frightened! To my sadness,I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water.I could hardly see the child as it was dark all around me. Actually,I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. The parents of the child who just arrived from work were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. Actually,I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help.I charged away to knock on the door on end. After a while,an athletic man of mediumheight opened the door.Panicked as I was,I attempted to collect my thoughts, trying to explain the situation in the way as concise as possible. While calming me by patting my shoulder, the man reached over to grab the torch on the shoe cabinet near the door.No sooner had we arrived where the child was trapped than the man started to scan the surroundings. Then he inched toward the hole and stretched out to seize the child’s hands, pulling him out completely.Shortly afterwards,we sent the child to the nearest police station and waited for his parents. The parents of the child who just arrived from work were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. They were more than grateful and thanked us.With an outpouring of relief,I was also proud of myself,as I had never imagined I would be part of a rescue party and the act of neighborliness could really make such a difference. While the mother and the father were holding the child tightly,I spotted the man beaming at the child with softness gleaming in his eyes.I was absorbed in my wild thought, wondering whether he was also a tender father. All of a sudden, thunder crashed overhead, which brought me back to reality.I walked to the man and tugged his sleeve, whispering,“Thank you.” I would never forget the good feeling of helping someone in need. It was a total shame. She would not face her classmates at all next Monday morning. Gemma walked slowly up the tree-lined hill toward the park. She needed time alone to think and cry.Her mom wouldn’t be home from work for another hour or so and she needed fresh air and sunlight after being in school all day.She needed so much more than that; what she needed was a brain transplant.Reading out loud in class today had been terrifying, annoying, embarrassing; she hated every moment of it.She was sweating, her voice shook, her face flushed red,and her heart pounded uncontrollably.Breathing normally was simply impossible in the fear and panic she felt.Gemma wished the ground had opened up and swallowed her whole, which would have been preferable. She stood before the class feeling like a fool. She had heard the whispered comments between her classmates, and had seen the look on her English teacher’s face as she went back to her seat. Gemma headed for the bench in the walled rose garden that she often visited,as far away from people as possible. She took off her heavy backpack and put it down heavily on the hard seat. The backpack was full of school books and she was glad to get it off her shoulders. She never wanted to go back to school. She sighed deeply, buried her face in her hands, and began to sob in despair. She was sure other kids didn’t have this problem. Some of her classmates even looked like they were enjoying reading out loud and took great delight in being the center of attention.Gemmadidn’t know what she was going to do. “Hello, are you alright, dear?” Startled(惊吓),Gemma abruptly pulled her hands away from her face and looked up in the direction of the voice, embarrassed that someone had seen her crying. Unexpectedly, her English teacher came up and watched her with kindness and concern. Gemma walked home feeling like she was walking a little taller and there was a spring in her steps. Unexpectedly , her English teacher came up and watched her with kindness and concern.Sitting down on the bench, next to Gemma, the teacher patted her shoulder gently, saying,“I know you were just too nervous, but it’s okay.Actually, most of us,like you, once experienced reading setbacks in public. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. With more practice, you’re sure to make it next time, aren’t you?” Her English teacher had a long heart-to-heart talk with Gemma.Realizing her lack of practice,Gemma felt a sudden sense of relief. She was aware of what to do then. When they walked out of the rose park hand in hand, Gemma felt like a wholly different figure. Gemma walked home feeling like she was walking a little taller and there was a spring in her steps.Today, what her teacher said made her think a lot.She had already got a detailed plan on what to do next. Now she began to practise reading out loud at mirror in her room time and again.“What are you doing,Gemma?” Her mother’s anxious voice came from the door.Gemma told Mum what had happened. Her mum gave Gemma a big thumb-up and encouraged her to overcome the difficulty bravely. On the fourth or fifth night,we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time,Mom suddenly got a great idea:Why didn’t we find a house with a likely- looking backyard and ask if we could set up a tent there? David and I became nervous. Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him...he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all,but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped...he fired the spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief,it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later...Then it...tearing open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a second time, and again,it fell back... The car abruptly stopped in front of him.“Get into the car.” Paul shouted at Mac.Mac jumped off the bike and slid into the car without delay as the wolf was just two steps away and was about to tear Mac into pieces. What a narrow escape! 典例 (原文见2016·浙江10月)But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again.Jane was so tired, hungry, and extremely frightened. She thought to herself,“If only I had not quarrelled with Tom.Where is Tom? He must have made the emergency call. What I need is enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow,I will be likely to guide the helicopter.” Lying beside the stream, she fell asleep very soon.Suddenly, she heard the shouts of tigers, which made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was quiet again. In the terrible darkness, she slept again. 1.Having got off at the wrong stop,I found myself left alone at the foot of the mountain at a noon of July.(增加外部冲突:角色与环境之间的冲突) The summer sun was glaring over my head as if to scorch me.The metal chair felt like a hot pan.Standing close to it , I could sense the heat it was giving off.I could clearly understand what a fish would experience without water.Worse still , next bus wouldn ’ t come until 3 pm.I was thirsty for water! 2.Looking around,I saw nothing but a small hut.(放大内心冲突) “ Maybe I can take a shade in the hu t , ” I thought to myself. Then another voice kept telling me , “ Don ’ t go there , girl. What if there lives a bad man ? ” However , I began to walk towards it.Two steps forward , one step back . 3.The door opened before I knocked at it.There stood a middle-aged man with thick beard.(增加 外部冲突:角色之间的冲突) He was the last kind of person I wanted to see.I jumped backward and got ready to escape.Seemingly knowing what I was thinking , he turned back and said , “ Mary , go and fetch some water for the sister . 4.I was about to board the plane when it occurred to me that I might have left my passport at the reception desk when I checked out.(角色与时间的冲突) The hotel was about 30 miles away and I had no friends or relatives in this city to get me the passport. What ’ s worse , the plane would take off in 20 minutes. So anxious was I that my mind went blank for a moment. Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that just about everyone has had at least once:Scary. Her reputation was not unlike that of Dracula.Miss Baugh allowed no nonsense(胡言乱语).She drilled us and taught us to take school seriously. She also introduced to us the concept of “extra credit” for a correct response to a random question—and a frown for an incorrect one.Miss Baugh had been teaching for a long time and knew how to frighten even the naughty boys in the back row, including me.She managed to scare us all. But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap prank(恶作剧) pieces— an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a puddle of ink. Of all the people I could have pranked,I chose Miss Baugh somehow. At the beginning of the class, before she’d returned to her classroom,I dared to approach her desk.I opened her grade book and placed the bottle and the black metal on one of the pages, proudly noting that it truly did look like spilled ink! Then I went to my desk and waited for the fun. I wasn’t disappointed. When Miss Baugh saw the items, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The prank had succeeded the way beyond my expectations. But immediately she discovered that it was just a piece of black metal. She picked up the “puddle”,then the bottle, and examined them. She looked up with eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly stare. Some of my classmates who had seen me set up the fake spill carefully avoided looking at me , so as not to give me away. Then came the unavoidable question:“Who did this?” After a few violent beats in my heart,I slowly raised my hand.Miss Baugh was as strict as before, but something changed in me. After a few violent beats in my heart,I slowly raised my hand.Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that struck terror in my heart. The whole classroom fell into a dead silence.I thought a storm of criticism was coming, but unexpectedly, she just laughed.“Well,it certainly fooled me!” she said, with a satisfied expression spreading across her face. She returned the prank pieces to me,and for a few seconds a sweet little old lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood. Miss Baugh was as strict as before, but something changed in me.She continued to lead us in our social studies with her serious attitude.I didn’t prank others any longer and was more focused on my study. And she became a good teacher worthy of respect in my heart just because I glimpsed that Miss Baugh had a warm human being beneath her stern face. That may have been the most enduring “extra credit” I received in seventh-grade social studies. When the last customer left KFC,it was already 10∶30 pm.Adam,an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home.He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation. Entering his room,Adam found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face. “Sorry,Adam.I...I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously. “What is it?” “This afternoon I sneaked(溜) out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Osman Brook’s car.I was so scared and I...I hurried home in panic.” “Is the car seriously damaged?” “The left headlight got broken.” “It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age.Besides, it’s illegal,” Adam raised his voice, obviously annoyed.Hearing this,Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard. “Anyway,it’s no use crying over spilt milk.I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.” The next morning when Adam got up,Bill was still sleeping soundly.Adam was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother. After breakfast,Adam took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it.In the yard he saw his motorcycle,on whose side the scratches(划痕) were clearly visible.Adam shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Osman’s house. When he arrived,he was welcomed by Osman’s wife Mary, who told him that Osman had gone to the garage to have his car repaired. “I have something important to tell him.Can I wait until he comes back ?” Adam requested eagerly. “Of course. He should be home soon,” Mary invited Adam in,served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him. After half an hour, the door opened and in came Osman.Having said hello to each other, Osman and Adam both sat down on the sofa. Adam cleared his throat and began to speak. Just then, there came a knock at the door. Adam cleared his throat and began to speak.“ Mr Brook , I’ m here to make an apology.Yesterday afternoon my brother Bill damaged your car and ran away in panic. We are awfully sorry for that.” “Oh,I see.But it’s no big deal,” Osman smiled. Then Adam drew out the money from his pocket and said to Osman with sincerity,“This is all the money I have.I wonder if it can pay for your loss.” However,Osman insisted that it was only minor damage and declined to take it. Just then, there came a knock at the door.Osman went to answer it,only to find Bill standing outside.“Morning,Mr Brook.I...I’ve come to say sorry for...” Bill stammered. But Osman laughed and let him in.The two brothers were both surprised and glad to see each other.Osman gave them a thumbs-up and praised them happily,“Good boys,I truly appreciate your honesty.Just forget about my car.” Whatever the boys said,Osman wouldn’t take the money. Finally,he accepted their suggestion that they make it up to him by doing some work in his garden. 1 He stopped the taxi, jumped in with the suitcase and told the driver,“Go to the police station, please.” 2 She would get off the car excitedly, laughing and dancing around. 2.续写常用的动作链形式 (1)“A,B and C”结构 “A,B and C”结构,就是多个连续的动作用在一个句子中。 The boys rushed excitedly to the lake, took off their clothes and jumped into the water. She dashed forward, knelt down and gathered her son into her arms. The singer glanced at the audience, took a deep breath and began to sing. The old man sat under the sunset, reading the newspaper and listening to the radio. Having queued for 3 hours,he was told that the ticket had been sold out. Deeply moved by the story, the children began to cry. 焦虑 (15)be wild with delight欣喜若狂 (16)be in high spirits情绪高涨 (17)be seized with panic惊慌失措 (18)a strong sense of loss强烈的失落感 (19)make one’s heart bleed使人心碎 (20)be down in spirits情绪低落 (21)lose one’s spirit垂头丧气 (22)get mad/cross at sb. (1)The surface of the calm lake stirred the waves, and my mood was as cheerful as a wave. (2)I couldn’t restrain my joy and jumped into the house. (3)We were very pleased to hear this encouraging news. (4)He was delighted to receive recognition for his achievements. (5)He stood silently, tears rolling down his cheeks. (6)I feel like I am floating in an ocean of sadness. (7)As he looked at Katherine, great sorrow clouded his eyes. (8)He was tongue-tied with anger. His hands trembled and he shouted for half a day. (9)Ellen felt both despair and anger at her mother. (10)Andy’s face paled with disappointment, perhaps with anger as well. (11)He is just mad at me because I don’t want to go. (12)She was too frightened to tell her family what had happened. (13)His heart was pounding,as if he were frightened. (14)My brain is blank.I just want to leave this horrible place. (15)We were all astonished at the unexpected news. (16)All those present to listen to her sad story were moved to tears. (9)a small village off the map一个偏僻的小村子 (10)the thinly populated rural area人烟稀少的农村地区 (11)the blue sky蓝天 (12)the songs of birds鸟鸣 (13)the fragile flowers娇嫩的花 (14)the green grass青草 (15)the fragrant roses芬芳的玫瑰 (16)the setting/rising sun落日/冉冉升起的太阳 2. (1)There is a small village midway between these two towns. (2)The bookstore is within a stone’s throw of the school. (3)Dark clouds were gathering in the sky. (4)The night sky is lit up by flashes of light. (5)The sun was now high in the southern sky. (6)The sun went in,and the breeze became cold. (7)The mist melted rapidly in the morning sun. (8)The mountain area is covered entirely in dense jungle. (9)The mountain top was covered with snow. (10)The region is uninhabited except for a few mountain villages. (11)Bathed in the sunshine and delighted by fantastic scenery,we headed for the destination. She thanked her and turned to the door when something brushed against her leg. 2. He boarded the bus reluctantly , hesitated , and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr Rowe. 3. Hearing this , her mother smiled patting her back gently. 4. Followed by some students , the teacher came into the office , with some books in his hand . 5. Unforgettable were her eyes that shone like diamonds and lips held in a steady smile. 6. Hearing the news , he was so disappointed that he drowned sadness in wine. 7. My heart was in my mouth when I walked into her office. 8. The lake is situated at the eastern extremity of the mountain range. I was angry about my father in the first year of college, because he didn’t care about my feelings at all. One day I had a serious quarrel with him.I was fed up with his direction and correction. How could he interfere with my life and my study plans? How could he understand the importance of my university activities? The only thing that he cared about was my academic performance! He didn’t understand my world and I didn’t understand his, either. I stormed out and sighed all the way to school.Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have the assignment that was due:a thought card. This class was taught by Dr.Sidney B.Simon.The thought card was the admission ticket to his Tuesday class. He would return them to us with his comment. My first thought card read,“All that glitters(发光) is not gold.” He commented,“What does this quote mean to you? Is it significant?” Obviously,he was taking it seriously.I surely didn’t want to reveal myself to him. The week progressed.Dr.Simon’s class was quite brilliant. He challenged us to think and come up with our own responses. But I had no handling strategies to deal with it. The second Tuesday came.I wrote on my card , “ The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” The next day the card came back:“You seem to need a listener. Is this important to your life?” I couldn’t remember a teacher caring personally about me since primary school. With all these memories filling my mind,I raced to class.Just outside the door,I took a card and wrote,“I have the most terrible Dad of the world!” Then I dashed in.Looking up at me, Dr.Sidney B.Simon reached out for the card, and I took my seat. The moment I sat down,I felt terrible.I didn’t mean to let that out. That night I had difficulty sleeping. What if he contacted my dad? On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings. I held the card tightly, thinking about his words. On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings. At first,Dr.Sidney B.Simon did not return the card to me.I sat in my usual seat, opening the book with worry and fear.I thought that Dr.Sidney B.Simon must have told my father about this. What was waiting for me was another more severe argument. After class,as I was walking to the door of the classroom,it was Dr.Sidney B.Simon who was calling my name. Then he told me that he would be my listener and exchanged the card with the words “Good medicine is bitter, and good advice is hard to hear”. I held the card tightly, thinking about his words.I was wondering whether I should tell my father what had happened these days.I found my father waiting for me at the school gate with the gift I had always wanted. That day,I walked home with my father. The setting sun shone on us, casting our shadows on the road.Cars of various colors passed by us,but they did not affect our conversation. We talked a lot that day,and it seemed that the journey from school to home had also been shortened. With the late afternoon sun setting on his farm,Steve finished feeding his horses and decided to go home. His two sons,Danny,6,and Claus,3,followed behind. As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate.Danny paused at an old well.Unknown to him,the board covering the well had grown easily broken over time. When Danny stepped on it,it caved in.Steve had just finished locking the gate when he turned around and saw only his younger son. “Where’s Danny?” he shouted.“He fell in the hole!” Claus said.Steve quickly realized what had happened.Danny could barely swim! He ran to the well and heard Danny screaming quite way below.Desperately,he jumped in. Steve hit the freezing water at the bottom of the well.He lifted his head out of the water and grabbed Danny, who was panicked, trying to stay afloat in water that was too deep for either of them to stand. Knowing they could float in the ice-cold water for only a short time,Steve pulled his son up onto his chest and tried all means to stand upright with two legs against the narrow well walls for support. His body was still partly submerged(淹没).“Dad,you can pull us out now,” Danny said. If only it were that easy. There was no way he could climb out.Looking up to see Claus looking down at them from the top of the well,Steve shouted,“Claus, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us.You have to go out to the road and get someone to help.OK?” “OK, Daddy,” Claus yelled and ran to the road. About 15 minutes later,Edmen and Sam,their neighbors, were driving by Steve’s farm when they noticed Claus alone by the side of the road, waving. Forty-some minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son,Steve came out, cold and wet. About 15 minutes later,Edmon and Sam,their neighbors, were driving by Steve’s farm when they noticed Claus alone by the side of the road, waving.Hearing the accident from Claus, they picked him up and sped to Steve’s house.Upon arrival,Edmon quickly jumped off the truck and grabbed a long thick rope. Then he and Sam rushed to the well.“Steve,” Edmon shouted,“We’re going to send a rope down to you.” “OK,I’ll send Danny up first.” Steve shouted back, freezing down there. With the rope tied around, the boy was pulled out first. Forty-some minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son,Steve came out, cold and wet.Just as his neighbors reached out to grab him,he collapsed to the ground.Struggling to his feet,Steve hugged his neighbors tightly, whispering “You saved our lives! Thank you!” For him, words couldn’t express his gratitude for their timely rescue and they were his good neighbors forever.“Daddy!” Danny and Claus cried, rushing to Steve.Steve held them tightly in arms, cherishing them like never before, and tears welled up in the eyes of this tough guy.
