Jack slowly lowered the broom handle to the ground. He bent down, keeping his
movements gentle so he wouldn’t scare the mother dog, who was watching him closely. Seeing the
bony mother and the eager puppy, his anger melted away, replaced by understanding. “You were
just hungry, weren’t you?” he said softly, more to himself. He reached out a hand slowly, letting
the mother dog smell it. She gave a small, tired wag of her tail. Jack knew a light tap wouldn’t
solve anything. These animals needed help.
He turned and walked quickly back toward his shop. His mind was now set on a new plan.
He returned with a paper bag containing two fresh loaves and a bowl filled with water from his
sink. Placing them carefully near the box, he stepped back. The mother dog approached
cautiously, drank deeply, and then began to share the food with her puppy. Every few days after
that, Jack would leave food and fresh water near the box.
