Scuba diving (水肺潜水) offers an exciting chance to explore rarely visited parts of the planet. It unlocks an
underwater world dominated by nature, where coral reefs’ unique, colorful life. and diverse marine creatures deliver
thrills unmatchable on land.
Not all dive sites offer equal marine life encounters, but standout spots excite both newly certified divers and
experts, with swims through stunning underwater attractions and chances to see amazing creatures. Below are three
of the world’s most spectacular scuba spots.
Great Barrier Reef
The ultimate dive destination is the world’s largest reef (visible from space) off Australia’s coast. Underwater,
it lives up to its fame — thousands of fish species and crystal-clear waters ease wildlife viewing. To protect this
lively yet fragile area, some zones limit boat traffic and fees on nearby operators fund conservation.
Palau
It’s ideal for open-water and reef diving. Blue Corner’s nutrient-rich waters attract small reef fish, and then
larger ones like tuna and sharks. Advanced divers can explore Blue Holes’ caverns nearby. Palau also has other reefs
and sandy channels, with marine life including sharks and manta rays. Its famous Jellyfish Lake, a surface
swimming site, has unique golden jellyfish, which is mildly stinging (刺人的) and harmless, but no scuba is allowed
to conserve it.
Cayman Islands
Clear, warm waters suit divers chasing colorful underwater life. Its big draw is diverse options — Bloody Bay
Wall, a massive wall dropping from 10-20 feet deep, is top for serious divers, with unique wildlife in upper walls and
shallows. Superior visibility lets newly certified divers spot many creatures in shallow waters, and reefs add unique
experiences.
21.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To compare popular dive sites.
B.To illustrate marine life behavior.
C.To update scuba diving techniques.
D.To introduce top diving destinations.
22.Why is scuba diving banned in Palau’s Jellyfish Lake?
A.To avoid jellyfish stings.
B.To reserve for advanced divers.
C.To prevent equipment damage.
D.To preserve its unique environment.
23.Which destination is best for beginners?
A.Great Barrier Reef.
B.Cayman Islands.
C.Blue Corner.
D.Palau.

The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an
overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This
anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a
celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth
Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my
passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I
broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured
out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began.
“Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with
deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be
less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps
around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.
Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was
forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I
know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.
24.What does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Foundation.
B.Solution.
C.Symbol.
D.Cause.
25.What does the author’s mother attach most importance to?
A.The author’s overall wellbeing.
B.The sacrifice for her daughter.
C.The relief of the author’s stress.
D.The author’s devotion to schoolwork.
26.What does the use of the “rubber band” try to illustrate?
A.A conflict with her father about goals.
B.A bond between the author and her mother.
C.A shift in the author’s outlook on pressure.
D.A link to the author’s academic performance.
27.What does the author mean by saying “reaching for the moon”?
A.She will be unbeatable.
B.She will continue to aim high.
C.She has achieved all her goals.
D.She has a passion for astronomy.

An experiment was a striking attempt to investigate weight control. For six weeks, a group of mice fed on
high-fat food, and then scientists infected the mice with worms (蠕虫).
Bruno Guigas, a molecular biologist at the Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases in the
Netherlands, led this study some years back and the results, he says, were quite amazing. The mice lost fat and
gained less weight overall than mice not exposed to worms. Within a month or so, he recalls, the scientists barely
needed their measuring tool to see that the mice infected with worms lost more weight than the ones not exposed to
worms. Infection with worms seems to have fought obesity (肥胖), the researchers reported in 2015.
While it’s true that worms eat up the food their hosts might otherwise digest, that doesn’t seem to be the only
factor at work here. There’s also some complicated biology within the emerging scientific field of
immunometabolism (免疫代谢).
Over the past couple of decades, researchers have recognized that the immune system doesn’t just fight
infection. It’s also associated with organs like the liver, the pancreas and fat tissue, and implicated in the progression
of obesity and type 2 diabetes. These and other metabolic disorders generate a troublesome immune response —
inflammation ( 炎症), which worsens metabolism still further. Metabolic disease, sometimes, is inflammatory
disease.
Scientists have also observed the metabolic influence of worms in people who became naturally infected with
the worms or were purposely seeded with worms in clinical trials. While the physiology isn’t fully understood, the
worms seem to be real masters at controlling inflammation, as discussed in the 2024 Annual Review of Nutrition.
Worms can be dangerous in high numbers, and cause symptoms such as diarrhea and malnutrition in those at
high risk, including children. But for most people, infection with a few worms is benign. They can coexist with
humans.
“We’re never going to cure or treat metabolic disease with worm infections,” says Guigas. “They cause
unpleasant side effects, and it would be impractical to infect millions of people with worms. But the findings could
inspire more traditional treatments, which might bring fewer negative effects.”
28.What happened to the mice exposed to worms within about a month?
A.They became sick of high-fat food.
B.They broke free of the infected worms.
C.They infected the mice not exposed to worms.
D.They got noticeably thinner than worm-free mice.
29.What can be learned from paragraph 4?
A.Inflammatory disease can be cured with worms.
B.Treating metabolic disease demands deworming.
C.The immune system only fights against infection.
D.Controlling inflammation may benefit metabolism.
30.What does the underlined word “benign“ in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Harmless.
B.Dangerous.
C.Complex.
D.Avoidable.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Studies on Mice: The Key to Weight Control
B.Worms Can Help to Fight Metabolic Disease
C.Worms: A Potential Threat to Human Health
D.Inflammatory Disease Spreads Among People

Fishing is a way of life for people who live on the floating villages of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake. These
Southeast Asians depend on fish in the lake. But those fish are in trouble.
Overall, their numbers in Tonle Sap Lake have been falling sharply. Compared to the number in 2003, just 12
percent as many could be found in 2019. Chevalier was part of a team that shared those data in Science of the Total
Environment. “If the tendency continues,” he says, “there will be nothing for people there to eat any more.”
Dams (大坝) are a big problem, Chevalier says. These structures break up river systems. With growing human
populations, overfishing becomes more of a threat. As people keep fishing, the share of fish left there could decrease
even more. Pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems, too. People have also been changing the land in ways that
damages the habitat in lakes and streams. And then there’s a growing number of non-native harmful species. Lastly,
global warming has been causing harm by stressing both fish and their food sources.
Still, the situation isn’t hopeless. Researchers are working to identify the most effective ways to change that.
One way is to remove outdated or ill-placed dams. The largest such U. S. project took down four dams from the
lower Klamath River. Soon after, thousands of salmon (鲑鱼) were swimming upstream through this newly opened
stretch. Elsewhere, dam operators can reduce harm by changing river flows. Limiting flow too much can cause
downstream areas to dry up. Smarter dam placement would also help.
“Restoring habitat can help if done right. But this work costs money. And it’s hard to restore entire streams,”
John Gray, a fish biologist, says. In 2022, scientists tried repopulating some fish species at Tonle Sap Lake.
However, nearly half the fish were caught less than three months later.
With each success or failure, scientists learn how better to deal with these big problems. Teens can get
involved. Many conservation groups welcome help from people of any age.
32.Why is fishing mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To present a way of living.
B.To state the best fishing place.
C.To lead to the main concern.
D.To stress the value of tradition.
33.Which of the following is a way to settle the problem caused by dams?
A.Increasing the use of dams.
B.Turning dams into river habitats.
C.Choosing the locations for dams wisely.
D.Limiting the river water flowing downstream.
34.What does Gray think of restoring habitat?
A.It has limited benefits.
B.It is useless.
C.It will bring worse results.
D.It is money-saving.
35.What is the best title of the text?
A.Remove Old Dams
B.Threats to Southeast Asian Population
C.Benefits of Protecting Fish
D.Help Tonle Sap Fish Survive

Why Do Electric Vehicles Make People More Carsick?
With electric vehicles (EVs) gaining significant popularity globally — accounting for 22% of new car sales in
2024 — many passengers report experiencing increased motion sickness compared to traditional vehicles. Social
media platforms are filled with such personal experiences, particularly from those riding in passenger or back seats.
36
A primary reason for this phenomenon is the lack of familiarity with EV motion patterns. As William Emond,
a PhD researcher in France specializing in motion sickness, explains, people’s brains heavily depend on past
experiences to predict and interpret motion. 37 For instance, experienced drivers naturally expect
acceleration after hearing engine revs in fuel-powered cars, but EVs operate without such familiar auditory signals.
38 Recent research indicates that specific seat vibrations and the complete absence of traditional
engine noise in EVs contribute significantly to motion discomfort. Furthermore, the regenerative braking systems —
innovative technology that transforms kinetic energy ( 动能) into battery power — cause an unusually gradual
slowdown. 39
Beyond this, motion sickness fundamentally occurs when the brain receives contradictory sensory signals
about body movement. The inner ear, visual cues, and physical sensations send mixed messages to the brain,
creating what experts call a “neural mismatch”. 40 This mechanism explains why drivers themselves rarely
experience carsickness — they control and predict the vehicle’s movements.
A.Such long-term conflict can trigger motion sickness symptoms.
B.Another contributing factor is that EV-specific features add to the problem.
C.Some manufacturers are improving suspension systems to minimize vibrations.
D.Drivers usually don’t experience carsickness due to their control over the vehicle.
E.This technology lengthens the stopping process and may worsen feelings of sickness.
F.Without previous EV experience, the brain has to struggle to estimate forces accurately.
G.In regard to this phenomenon, researchers have identified several scientific explanations.

Little Notes
Once again, I headed out to look for a job. Although I wasn’t very confident about the interview, I still held
my head high, trying to stay hopeful under the morning sun. Before leaving, I made sure to stick a note on the fridge
that read, “Son, finish your breakfast and have a good day.” Then I walked out of the door.
This quiet tradition came from my father. I still remember how, before every trip, he would leave a note on my
desk: “I’ll come back with gifts for you.” When I stayed up late studying, I would open my pencil box and find
another note inside: “Go to bed and have a good dream.” During summer camp, I would find a little note in my
pocket that said, “Take care of yourself.” Those small pieces of paper were my first understanding of love — a
gentle way of reminding me that someone always cared.
Years later, when my own son Jack was old enough to read, I continued the tradition. I left little notes
throughout his life: “You are smarter than you think” in his math book, “Son, my little sun” on his bedroom door,
and “Good luck at soccer” inside his shoe. He never said anything about them, but he became a happy, brave, and
kind boy. That was enough for me.
Then came the hardest winter of my life. My company cut our pay, and people began whispering about who
might lose their jobs. I worked every day with a heavy heart, always anxious, but in the end, I was still told to leave.
It was a huge shock — but things got even harder. My husband lost his job too and had to move to another city to
find work. I didn’t have time to feel sad. I needed to find a new job quickly to support our family.
