We asked readers of The New York Times to tell us about effective environmental fixes underway. And we had
received more than 2,400 submissions.
Native plants were especially popular. We received more than 100 submissions from people who planted
pollinator-friendly ( 传粉者友好的) gardens in backyards and abandoned lots, creating habitat that supports
beneficial insects and birds. We heard about how your children were making a difference, too. A reader from
Michigan told us about her high-school daughter who, in 2023, at age 14, began planting native trees in their
community to help fight climate change and started a grassroots organization called Plant It Forward. Others wrote
to tell us about state programmes, like Whole Home Repairs, in Pennsylvania, which helps low-income property
owners improve energy efficiency, add rooftop solar panels and make repairs. We heard about regenerative farming,
solar panel installations (安装), food forests, neighbourhood compost sites and ecological projects.
We also received submissions from around the world. One reader in the Netherlands shared with us
Amsterdam’s plan to install flights of steps to help prevent cats and other animals from drowning in the city’s canals.
Victoria Bohm wrote from Calgary, Alberta, where she is involved with Alberta Native Plant Rescue, a group that
saves native plants from grassland and pastures that are planned for construction, and uses the plants for ecological
restoration as well as in home and community gardens.
Many people noted that their efforts often felt small. But the joy, satisfaction and pride people took in doing
what they could to help the environment shone through. “It’s been a joy watching them grow and prosper (繁荣) and
they are fellow creatures who link us to a great wide world beyond our human understanding, ” Mark Shullenberger,
of Indianapolis, wrote as he told us of his own efforts. He said that over the decades, he had planted a dozen trees in
his yard and around his house. He takes pleasure in how they provide habitat for birds and squirrels.
24.What role do native plants play?
A.Making deserted lots used again.
B.Offering shelter for beneficial wildlife.
C.Preventing the spread of foreign species.D.Enhancing property values of the community.
25.What are the flights of steps in Amsterdam intended to do?
A.Ensure safety for wild animals near waterways.
B.Enhance the visual appeal of canal-side walkways.
C.Create additional seating areas for public gatherings.
D.Allow for convenient boat stops throughout the canals.
26.What can we learn from Mark Shullenberger’s words?
A.He feels weak connections to nature.
B.He makes a living by planting for neighbours.
C.He considers planting a duty of every citizen. D.He gets personal fulfillment through planting.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Economic Benefits of Sustainable Agriculture
B.Scientific Breakthroughs in Urban Ecological Restoration
C.Government Policies Promoting Renewable Energy Adoption
D.Grassroots Environmental Actions and Their Personal Significance
C

Give a group of scientists the same data and the same research question, and they should come up with similar
answers in theory. But they don’t, according to a paper published in BMC Biology, which finds that 246 ecologists
analyzing the same data sets reached widely varying conclusions, with some finding effects in totally opposite
directions.
The paper is the latest in a line of “many-analyst” projects that examine how results can vary because of
scientists’ decisions during data analysis — and the first to study the effects in ecology. To find out how much those
decisions affect the results, Elliot Gould, a Ph.D .student at the University of Melbourne, and their colleagues
recruited 246 ecologists, working in 174 teams, to answer two different research questions, each based on a single
data set.
The findings match up with the results of previous many-analyst studies, and show “the powerful role of
subjective researcher choices in scientific projects,” says Eric Uhlmann, an organizational psychologist. Gould says:
Researchers have to decide which variables to control for, for example, and how to deal with missing data. “And
those different choices that we make can kind of multiply.”
It’s impossible to know whether the problem affects an entire field from just one or two examples, says
Eötvös Loránd University metascientist Balazs Aczel. To find out, he is running a project to have multiple analysts
each tackle a question from 100 randomly chosen social science papers. But similar findings have popped up in a
range of fields — including neuroscience and economics — and suggest “we are facing a very serious issue,” he
says.
Anne Scheel, a metascientist at Utrecht University, says the many-analyst findings don’t mean fields like
ecology and psychology can’t ensure reliable results. Such fields tend to ask broad questions that leave a lot of
choices up to researchers. “The harder sciences seem to have more success coming to agreement on difficult
questions,” she says. “I think that has something to do with how precisely things are defined.”
28.What did the BMC Biology paper focus on?
A.The collection of data in ecology.
B.The cause of contradictory results.
C.The effect of choices on conclusions.
D.The comparison of different methods.
29.What contributes to the varying conclusions according to paragraph 3?
A.Research preference.
B.Uniform data.
C.Team division. D.Training gaps.
30.What has led Balazs Aczel to say “we are facing a very serious issue”?
A.The uncertainty of ecological studies.
B.The challenge in choosing questions.
C.The restriction in research approaches.
D.The evidence from multiple disciplines.
31.What is Anne Scheel’s suggestion on ensuring reliable results?
A.Broadening scale.
B.Deepening research.
C.Increasing difficulty.
D.Improving precision

The age of pre-sorting mixed plastic waste may soon be over. The secret weapon? A cheap catalyst (催化剂)
that targets one of our most problematic plastics.
Even after decades of worldwide efforts, recycling plastic is still hard to do. The main troublemakers are a
group of plastics called polyolefins (聚烯烃). Humans produce about 300 million tons of plastic products globally
each year, and about 220 million tons of them are made from polyolefins. Most of these polyolefin products are
single-use items like milk bottles, trash bags, and juice boxes. “Basically, almost everything in your refrigerator is
made from polyolefins,” said Yosi Kratish, a chemist at Northwestern University.
Plastics are usually broken down with catalysts — substances that use weak chemical bonds to help them
break apart. But polyolefins are different. They resist breaking down because their carbon-carbon bonds are very
strong and hard to react with. As a result, less than 10 percent of polyolefin products are recycled each year. Current
solutions are not true answers: the plastics can be cut up, melted, and made into small low-quality plastic pieces, but
human sorting is still required, and even small food bits can ruin a whole group. Burning polyolefins works but
needs very high temperatures, as hot as 1,292 °F.
Kratish’s team focused on hydrogenolysis, a process that uses hydrogen gas and a catalyst to turn plastics into
useful fuel-like chemicals. Old hydrogenolysis methods needed very high heat and expensive metals like platinum.
The new method uses a cheaper choice — cationic nickel ( 镍). Unlike other nickel-based catalysts with many
reaction sites, this one has only a single site, allowing it to cut the strong carbon-carbon bonds at lower temperatures
and with less hydrogen gas.
Surprisingly, the catalyst even works with dirty plastics like PVC. “Adding PVC to a recycling mixture
has always been forbidden. But apparently, it makes our process even better,” Kratish said.
If it can work widely, this discovery could reduce the need for time-consuming pre-sorting and greatly cut
down on the amount of microplastics released into the environment every day.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Polyolefin-based items are rarely used in daily life.
B.A large quantity of plastic products are polyolefin-based.
C.Most polyolefin products are designed for long-term use.
D.Recycling polyolefins has been highly successful globally.
33.What is the key challenge in recycling polyolefins according to the text?
A.The inability to handle soiled plastics.
B.The high cost of hydrogen gas required.
C.The lack of effective sorting technology.
D.The strong chemical bonds resisting breakdown.
34.How does the new catalyst improve upon previous methods?
A.It removes the need to sort plastic first.
B.It needs costly metals to work efficiently.
C.It works at lower heat with less hydrogen.
D.It operates when plastics are clean and sorted.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Problems with plastic waste and recycling
B.Polyolefins are troublemakers in recycling
C.New methods to make plastics more safely
D.Easier plastic recycling is around the corner

Every day, we speak to and spend time with the people who mean the most to us. However, think about how
many people you interact with in a typical week are the ones you wouldn’t consider as close connections. 36
. In sociology, these are known as our “weak ties”, referred to as such to differentiate them from our strong ties, like
close friends and family members.
37 . For example, if you spoke about your job hunt to a group of close friends, they might only be
aware of the same job opportunities as you because you move in the same circles. However, mentioning it to an
acquaintance, like a regular waiter, connects you to people outside your own social circle, which can provide
unexpected job opportunities.
“Weak ties can serve special functions not served by close ties, including providing access to unique
information and resources,” says Susan Sprecher, distinguished professor at Illinois State University. “Additionally,
many people interact with more weak ties throughout a day than they do with close ties. 38 .”
Indeed, weak ties can give us a real mental health boost. A recent study done by Sprecher indicated people
with wider connections of weak ties tend to be happier. 39 . They reported feeling more happiness and
greater feelings of belonging on days when they interacted with more classmates than usual.
Given they have such a strong impact on our lives, why not create weak ties? 40 . Often, this will
mean going outside and speaking to people, whether it’s those you pass in the street, who serve you in shops, or with
whom you share a class.
A.The research involved students
B.You find yourself in a better mood
C.We just need to engage with other people
D.Weak ties can have a smaller effect than you might think
E.This diverse social network is related with good health and well-being
F.For example, you chat with the guys who regularly serve you at the store
G.Strong ties tend to form closed social groups with limited new information

As a 19-year-old nurse intern (实习生), hardworking and enthusiastic, I always offered warm and considerate
care to my patients. I loved photography and often used my camera to record some touching moments.
One busy afternoon, I heard the urgent calls of my fellow nurses, “Out of the way!” On a stretcher (担架) lay
an elderly man named Alexander, unconscious after a massive heart attack. The urgency of his condition necessitated
immediate surgery.
The operation lasted for hours. When the chief doctor emerged, he said to me, “Had Alexander been admitted
even two minutes later, we could have lost him. Can you attend to him?” I nodded eagerly, ready to assist in any way
I could.
Entering the room, I found Alexander still unconscious. For the next few hours, I carefully monitored his
condition. Eventually, he regained consciousness, though remaining expressionless. Considering the complexity of
his surgery, he was advised to stay in hospital for two months. During the time, I routinely checked on him — not
just for his physical health but to ensure he didn’t feel lonely.
Despite our growing friendship, I noticed that no one ever came to visit Alexander. Curiosity and concern got
the better of me, and one evening, I decided to ask him about it. Initially hesitant, he finally opened up. “My wife
and I used to be sculptors, and we lived happily,” he said, his voice trembling. “After my wife, my soulmate, passed
away, I could no longer bring myself to sculpt.”
I reached out and held Alexander’s hands. “We’re your family here,” I said, my eyes filled with tears. My
words seemed to be a comfort to Alexander, bringing a smile to his face — a smile that had been absent for a long
time since his wife left him. Then he shared his sculptural works, revealing their amazing artistic charm.
