The literary world has a new star. Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah is the winner of the 2021 Nobel
Prize in literature in recognition of his “compassionate penetration ( 洞 察 力 ) of the effects of
colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate of the refugee (难民)”.
Gurnah grew up in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. In 1964, Gurnah was forced to
leave for England as a refugee, where he began to reflect on his experiences in a diary and then
through stories. Through the years, he wrote 10 novels and stories that explore the suffering caused
by war and colonialism. “The thing that motivated the whole experience of writing for me was this
idea of losing your place in the world,” Gurnah told The New York Times.
His 1994 novel Paradise, which tells the story of a boy growing up in early 20th century
Tanzania, marked his breakthrough as a novelist and won the Booker Prize.—Afterlives, his most
recent work, continues the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the period of German
colonialism in Tanzania.
Before he retired, Gurnah, 73, was a professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the
University of Kent in England. Although Gurnah’s first language is Swahili, he adopted English as
his literary language. His writing often contains traces of Arabic, Swahili and German, as well.
Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel committee, said that Gurnah “is widely recognized as one
of the world’s more preeminent post-colonial writers”.
Ethiopian-American novelist Maaza Mengiste described Gurnah’s writings as being “like a
gentle blade (刀刃) slowly moving in” “He has written work that is absolutely unfearing and yet at
the same time completely compassionate and full of heart for people of East Africa,” Mengiste said.
“He is writing stories that are often quiet stories of people who aren’t heard, but there’s an insistence
there that we listen.”
24. What are Gurnah’s works mainly about?
A. The life of the people in Tanzania.
B. Effects of war and colonialism. C.
Experiences of living abroad. D.
Growth in an underdeveloped nation.
25. What do we know about Gurnah?

China’s historic 23-day Chang’e 5 mission has not only obtained precious rock and soil samples
from the moon, but has also brought back a group of seeds that traveled the furthest in the nation's
agricultural and forestry histories. More than 30 kinds of seeds, including that of rice, oats etc., were
placed inside the multi-module Chang’e 5 spacecraft and orbited around the moon for about 15 days.
Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after being exposed to extraterrestrial
(地外的) forces in lunar orbit and also hoped that they could develop beneficial mutations (突变).
This mission offered good opportunities to scientists, which enabled them to deepen their studies on
the effect of cosmic rays on the growth and evolution of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to forces such as
microgravity, vacuums and cosmic radiation during a spaceflight and then sending them back to
Earth for further observation and planting. Researchers observe and examine several generations of
plants grown from space-bred seeds and investigate their mutations—some are positive and desirable
while others are negative. Those with positive mutations will be kept and analyzed, and will be
introduced to farmers after their certification and approval.
Space breeding can generate mutations faster and more conveniently than ground-based
experiments and can bring about some desirable traits that are otherwise hard to introduce.
Compared with natural or conventionally bred types of plants, space-developed versions with
positive mutations usually feature higher nutritional content, greater annual yields, shorter growth
periods and better resistance to diseases and insect pests.
China conducted its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into
space. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese
spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in
China that have been approved for large-scale cultivation, ranging from grains to vegetables and
fruits. The Chang’e 5 robotic mission returned 1,731 grams of lunar rock and soil to Earth, marking a
historic accomplishment 44 years after the last lunar substances were taken back.
28. Why were the seeds placed inside Chang’e 5?
A.To pick out the fittest for mutations. B.To understand extraterrestrial forces. C.
To study the intensity of cosmic rays. D.To expose them to a special environment.
29. What do we know about space-based mutation breeding?
A.It is not a time-consuming process. B.Mutations develop in a random way.C.It often brings about desirable effects. D.Approval will be granted to mutated plants.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It is a custom to put seedlings on a spacecraft.
B. China was the first to do a space breeding experiment.
C. It is some time since seeds were last taken into space.
D. Space breeding has brought us commercial benefits.
31. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Space-bred Seeds Offer Great Chances B.Chang’e 5 Returns with a Big Package
C.Plant Mutations Result in a Better Life D.Seeds from Space Mark a New History

China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western
methods, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) adopt a vastly different approach. For thousands of
years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore
forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies.
The core behind TCM is that the human body’s life is the consequence of the balance between
yin and yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and yin is the inner base to store
and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.
One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法), means insertion (插入) of
needles into superficial (表皮的) structures of the body—usually at acupoints (穴位)—to restore the
yin-yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion ( 灸 法 ), which involves burning the
mugwort (艾叶) on or near the skin at an acupoint.
The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is
practiced today is Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work
of TCM and is considered the most representative medical text in China.
Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles.
And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that
appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In
2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently,
TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19
since its outbreak in January 2020.
32. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.TCM. B.Acupuncture. C.Yin-yang balance. D.Moxibustion.
33. What can we learn about Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon from the text?
A. It distinguishes acupuncture from moxibustion.
B. It’s a foundation of world medical research.C. It stresses the importance of using acupoints.
D. It greatly contributes to the development of
TCM. 34.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the
passage?
A. To introduce TCM to the world.
B. To review the development of TCM.
C. To tell TCM and Western medicine apart.
D. To comment on TCM in fighting COVID-19.
35. What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text?
A. Why TCM gets recognition from WHO.
B. Why TCM is gaining popularity.
C. How TCM helps in the current situation.
D. How other countries adopt TCM well.

The Ancient Chinese Game of Go
Weiqi, known in English as Go, is one of the four skills that an ancient Chinese intellectual (知
识 分 子 ) could possess. It has a history of well over 4,000 years in China and remains popular.
Culturally, this activity is really “more than just a game”.
36 One of China’s classics, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, describes the
famous general Guan Yu playing Go while receiving surgery on his arm.
History books have recorded quite a number of ardent Go fans from each dynasty. Today, there
are still many in China, Japan and South Korea. Wu Yulin, a professional, explains its attraction, “In
Go, you can learn the dialectics ( 辩 证 法 ) and military stratagems. 37 There are numerous
variations within the game and you can never reach the bottom of it.”
38 Hua Yigang, Secretary General of the China Go Association, remarks on the
character-building qualities of Go. “You have to become entirely calm, otherwise you can’t play it.
You have to be very strong of mind. 39 You might make mistakes during a game, and
then have to readjust your mentality in order to fight to the end.”
In fact, all of our minds can benefit from playing Go, which officially has the capacity to make
you smarter. Research has shown that children who play Go have the potential for greater
intelligence. 40
Today, the number of Go fans in China is at 36 million and rising. Some universities like Beijing
University are even offering courses in Go to undergraduates.
A. There’s always loss and gain.
B. It’s a war between equal powers.C. That is because it motivates both the right and left sides of the brain.
D. You can also cultivate your character and improve your intelligence.
E. But more often, ancient Chinese played Go to cultivate their mind and character.
F. The influence of Go on Chinese society is quite evident in literature works.
G. Many people also love this ancient game for the Chinese philosophy it contains.

When I was in Grade10, my family had a tough time. My parents lost their jobs during the
Depression. Dad was too ill to work outside, while Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own
in our small community. We relied on our community assistance to keep us clothed, and although our
clothes were second-hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through for sending us kids to school. Every morning
she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our shoes were worn out. Constant
moving was typical for my family in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum
couldn't pay it. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
New Year was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar fund for social services.
Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a
roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for New Year.
Unknown to Mum, I had been shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy
a new pair of gloves. I knew exactly which gloves I wanted. They were made of genuine leather and
they had a price of twenty-three dollars. Well, the big day came on the last day of that year. I was
very excited, as I hurried to catch the bus. It was only a half-a-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a
house with lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no
decorations, nor any money for goodies. I knew then that we would have no delicious food for New
Year, and I felt sad.
As I continued walking, I began to feel bewildered. I was sixteen years old, and I was feeling a
strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of gloves while Mum was home in tears.
She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents.
注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The bus drove off without me. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. Though
not getting on the bus, I was still hesitant about heading towards the store. Then I chose to contribute to
my family household expense, strode towards the the grocery store and bought a turkey, ham, oranges
and so on. I spent every dollar of my hard-earned money on the food. It was the right thing to do. I would
do the same sacrifice as Mom did. I hurried home, knocking at the door with great excitement. When Mum opened the door, she surprisingly found that some of the groceries fell inside onto the
floor. Her mouth hung open in surprise, “where did you get these groceries?” I had a lot of explanation as
we unpacked all the food and put it away. Though she thought I should have bought my wanting gloves
instead of groceries, she threw her arms around me to express her appreciation, crying, “the best New
Year ever!” Even though I failed to get a new pair of gloves, the smile on Mum's face made it all
worthwhile. It was an unforgettable New Year.

W: It certainly is. This is the first time that I have traveled overseas.
M: Oh really? I’ve been to Vietnam and Thailand. (16)
W: Did you go there to study?
M: No, my parents gave me some money as a reward for getting into this university, so I decided to
spend it on seeing some of the world. (16)
W: You were very lucky.
M: Yes, I was — and it was great. I think everyone should have the chance to travel. It opens your eyes to
different things and to different ways of life.
W: Yes, I am learning a lot just being here.

Good afternoon, listeners. This is Dennis Parker in the newsroom of Central 125, your favorite
radio station for local news, weather and traffic reports. (17) First up today, at a press conference this
morning, Emma Stanbury, director of the Central Hospital, announced that they would be opening
a new women and children’s unit to serve the city’s growing population. (18) The existing hospital
has served the city for 32 years and also as a teaching facility for doctors and nurses. According to Ms.
Stanbury, the work on building the new unit will start next month and it will be ready to treat patients in
around 18 months.
Later today, the city’s Century Bridge is due to reopen after six months of work to repair
damage caused by last year’s floods. (19) The reopening should help deal with many of the traffic
problems in the city.
And now the weather and traffic news. Because of the heavy rain last night, traffic jams in the city
are worse than usual today. Several main roads are blocked by flood water. Luckily, there have been no
reports of injuries. However, the police are advising drivers to be careful until conditions get back to
normal. No more heavy rain is expected, so there’s a good chance that things will improve soon. We’ll be
back in an hour with a report on preparations for the city’s annual cultural festival, plus, of course,
all the latest news. (20) I’m Dennis Parker in the newsroom of Central 125.
