On June 12th, 2022, the Yellowstone National Park area’s weather forecast seemed fairly
学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司mild: warmer temperatures and rain showers would accelerate mountain snowmelt and could
produce “minor flooding”. At dusk, after several inches of rain fell, there were record-breaking
floods. “Models used to predict flooding are based on long-term and historical records. But they
do not reflect changes to the climate that emerged over the past decade,” said Weather
Underground founder Jeff Masters. “Those models are going to be inadequate to deal with a new
climate.” Another extreme weather event where the models came up short was Hurricane Ida,
which hit Louisiana last summer. On the same day, the weather service warned of a “serious
situation” that could turn “disastrous”, but the predicted 3 to 6 inches of rain for New York was far
short of the 9 to 10 inches that fell. The deadly June 2021 heat wave that hit the Pacific Northwest
offered another example. Warmer weather had been expected, but not temperatures of up to 47
degrees Celsius that broke previous records and killed an estimated 600 people in Oregon,
Washington state and western Canada. The surprise Yellowstone floods prompted people to close
off roads and bridges. No one died, somewhat unexpectedly, as more than 400 homes were
damaged or destroyed.

There is an interesting, but at the same time a sad phenomenon now:there is a rise in the
number of singers and bands that have little to do with good music. Many singers or bands know
little about what good music means. What is the cause of this rise?
Most of these singers have taken music as a“job” because it is a good source of making
money. And if you have a good appearance and also expensive clothes to show off at your
concerts or at different appearances in public, then your voice is not as important as it should be.
The public will prefer to admire more the most interesting parts of your body, whether you are a
girl or a boy. They will even forget about the fact that you are there to show your music skills, not
your dancing, which is important too, but not at such a high level.
Therefore, we can see many young girls on TV who look very good but who have nothing to
do with music. They choose to wear very provocative (挑逗性的) clothes to catch attention, but
when it comes to singing they are a complete mess and one doesn't need to have an ear for music
to notice their lack of talent. But anyway, they have concerts and they enjoy travelling from one
place to another. It is the public's fault because they accept this and are pleased with this
commercial music. People who enjoy this kind of music are generally young people while adults
prefer listening to old good bands.
However, the young generation should understand while appearance is important, it is less
important than talent and a good voice. If somebody has a great voice and wants to become a
singer, he should take some special courses in this area, because they will help him improve
singing abilities.
24.The passage shows that many singers consider music as_____.
A.an art serving the public
B.a good way of making money
C.a way of living fully
D.a fashionable lifestyle
25.From the passage we can learn that____.
A.appearance is the most important thing in the world of music
B.all people who have received training in singing can become famous
C.adults should help young people improve their abilities
D.a singer's talent and voice are the most important factors
26.What do you think is the author's attitude towards the rising number of new singers and
bands?
A.Critical. B.Supportive.
C.Tolerant. D.Worried.
27.What kind of article does this passage belong to?
A.Entertainment. B.Sport.
C.Comment. D.Story.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.A

because it is a good source of making money(这些歌手中的大多数都把音乐作为一份“工
However, the young generation should understand
while appearance is important, it is less important than talent and a good voice(然而,年轻一代
But anyway, they have
concerts and they enjoy travelling from one place to another. It is the public's fault because they
accept this and are pleased with this commercial music.(但无论如何,他们有音乐会,他们喜

项。

As founder of the Global Water Policy Project and lead expert for National Geographic’s
Freshwater Initiative, Sandra’s goal is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the
Earth’s freshwater resources.
Sandra says she grew up in New York as a Long Island beach kid. She was always a ware of
the “comfort, peace, and balance” offered by the natural world, especially the environments of
wetlands and rivers. Before starting work on a project, Sandra considers an area’s “geography of
water”: the amount of water in the area’s basin, the population, and the agricultural use of water.
The geography of water helps Sandra determine an area’s water stress. Water stress is the situation
where a community is using more water than nature made available.
Sandra first became aware of the concept of water stress after reading Swedish hydrologist
Malin Falkenmark’s book Water for a Starving World. This groundbreaking work linked water
use, food and population. As Sandra began to understand water stress, she realized it affects
everything, from a community’s development to its political security. “So many great civilizations
developed alongside rivers and lakes,” she says, pointing to the ancient civilizations of Ur
(between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers), Egypt (which developed on the Nile), and the Indus
River Valley.
Today, Sandra points out, more than 200 rivers are shared between two or more nations.
Dams and other river management techniques implemented (实施) by nations upstream have a
huge impact on nations downstream. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers have their sources in Turkey,
for example, but their basins are in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. River management from
Turkey would impact the freshwater available to these countries for drinking, hygiene (卫生),
industry, and transportation.
Water management has become part of many nations’ foreign policy. Sandra points to the
Mekong River Commission. The headwaters of the Mekong River are in China, although the basin
is nearly 800,000 square kilometers and includes the nations of Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos,
Thailand, and Vietnam. Many governments are members of the Mekong River Commission,
which promotes sustainable development of the water supply.
28.What did water mean to Sandra as a child?
A.It represented a kind of spirit.
B.It caused stress to her life.
C.It brought many obstacles to her.
D.It offered a way for transportation.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Water stress was perfectly settled.
B.Water contributed much to the world culture.
C.Water had no impact on the steadiness of a nation.
D.Water crisis was recognized before Malin’s book.
30.What inspiration can we get from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers?
A.Upstream countries have priorities.
B.Every country has its policy for rivers.
C.Rivers across countries are decreasing.
D.Source governance of rivers is critical.
31.What’s the purpose of the author taking the Mekong River as an example?
A.To show its importance to the locals.
B.To emphasize its great volume of flow.
C.To show the power of cooperation.
D.To tell its challenges to related nations.
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.C

Dams and other river management techniques
implemented (实施) by nations upstream have a huge impact on nations downstream.
governments are members of the Mekong River Commission, which promotes sustainable
development of the water supply.

In the 1960s, anthropologist (人类学家) Jean Briggs set out on a trip to the Arctic Circle (北
Living in an environment cut off from all the usual creature comforts, Briggs survived
thanks to the kindness of one Inuit family who took her in to their home. During her time among
the Inuit, she came across a surprising phenomenon: Inuit people have an extraordinary ability to
control their anger.
Briggs documented certain occasions where it might have seemed plausible to fly off the
handle. A fishing line that had taken many days to make broke on its first use. The simple
response: “Sew it together.” A hot pot of tea that ended up all over the floor of an igloo (冰屋),
damaging it, was met with no real acknowledgement. The person who knocked it over just got up
and made a new pot.
Briggs was left with the burning question of how the Inuit manage to raise such level-headed
adults. In a meeting with the elders, it was revealed that the Inuit have a golden parenting rule:
“Don’t shout at small children.” One mom, Lisa Ipeelie explained, “When they’re little, it doesn’t
help to raise your voice. And this is even the case if a child bites or hits a parent. If a child is
turning to this behavior, it’s because there’s an underlying issue that needs to be dealt with,
calmly.”
Still, you might be wondering how the Inuit get their children to behave, or even to stay safe.
Well, it’s thanks to the storytelling tradition in the culture. These stories can be quite frightening.
“Our parents told us that if we went out without a hat, the northern lights are going to take our
head off,” shared Inuit film producer, Myna Ishulutak.
However, psychologist Deena Weisberg believes “kids learn best through stories, which are
interesting to them.” Interestingly, she states that stories with a peppering of danger have even
more appeal to kids. “If we tell children stories they are in awe of, which help them to behave,
they will pass them on to their own families,” she says.
32.Why did Briggs find Inuit people amazing?
A.They care little about personal belongings.
B.They always keep calm.

D.They treat strangers like family.
33.What does the underlined word “plausible” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Reasonable. B.Preferable. C.Unacceptable. D.Debatable.
34.What might Ipeelie do if her boy hits her?
A.Shout at him. B.Turn to others. C.Find out the reason. D.Beat him.
35.What does Weisberg imply about using scary stories to get kids to behave?
A.It improves parent-kid relationships. B.It brings about dangerous behavior.
C.It is harmful to kids. D.It should be promoted.

The Ancient Chinese Game of Go
Weiqi, known in English as Go, is one of the four skills that an ancient Chinese intellectual
(知识分子) could possess. It has a history of well over 4,000 years in China and remains popular.
Culturally, this activity is really “more than just a game”.
36 One of China’s classics, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, describes the
famous general Guan Yu playing Go while receiving surgery on his arm.
History books have recorded quite a number of ardent Go fans from each dynasty. Today,
there are still many in China, Japan and South Korea. Wu Yulin, a professional, explains its
