For years, Stanley Beach has been known as the dirtiest beach in the country. But that’s about
to be changed. Volunteers from a number of local high schools have set out to clean it up. As
a matter of fact, they went on their first cleaning trip last Sunday, spending four hours picking
up trash along the coast. In the end, they went away with five hundred kilograms of plastic
waste! Now, their next trip has been scheduled for the coming Saturday. Meanwhile, they
have also put out a call to invite more citizens to join their efforts. If you wish to help, please
be at the Sea Cafe at 8 am on Saturday. Over there, gloves and garbage bags will be provided.
What all the volunteers need from citizens is the kind support! Several news stations will also
be there to film the event. So please be prepared to see yourselves on TV soon!

Britain is arguably the great walking nation. About two-thirds of us already head out to
stretch our legs once a week. The following festivals offer a wealth of organized walks, but
walkers should register in advance.
Prestatyn and Clwydian Range festival
Visitors to Wales tend to move west, to either the well-worn tracks of Snowdonia or the
Pembrokeshire Coast Path. There are 25 walks packed into the three days, with various
options available, including a half-mile Roman-themed adventure, an eight-mile walk
exploring the life of 18th-century Welsh naturalist and travel writer Thomas Pennant and a
21-mile Offa's Dyke challenge. All walks are free.
Denbighshire, Wales, 19—21 May
Otley walking festival
This local festival has grown from humble origins in 2000 into a busy schedule of 50 short-
distance walks and events celebrating the lives and landscapes of Wharfedale in West
Yorkshire. One might enjoy the Five Pubs Walk, Walking With Wine, Four More Pubs or
Lost Pubs of Otley. All walks are free, though there is sometimes a small charge for transport.
Otley, West Yorkshire, 24 June—3 July

Dartmoor delights (使高兴) walkers because, while tracks are there to be followed, the
lack of wire and other barriers, and the relatively small number of farm buildings on the
higher ground, create a sensation of freedom. The six free wheelchair walks, starting daily at
11am, explore Dartmoor's industrial history, bronze age valuables and Victorian railway
builders.
Devon, 27 August—2 September
Gower walking festival
With more superb walking options inside a single landscape than perhaps anywhere else,
the Gower peninsula (半岛) sometimes feels as if it's all coast. The further information for
this nine-day festival, celebrating the10th anniversary of the Wales Coast Path (WCP), has
yet to be finalized. Half of the walks offered during the festival will be on the coastal path.
£10 adults, over-sixes £6.
Glamorgan, 2—10 September

At every wedding I attended this past year, the event space has been decorated with family
portraits-black-and-white photos of grandparents, parents in 1970s hairstyles and family
heirlooms (传家宝) passed down from generations.
As a child,I used to cry when looking at those reminders. When my husband suggested
making a slideshow of our family photos for our wedding,I realized we barely had any.It
was at that time that I understood just why these kinds of items inspired so many complicated
feelings.
My grandparents immigrated from Poland to Cuba in the 1930s.During the Cuban
Revolution, their business and home were shut down. The family came to the United States
in 1968,leaving everything but a few pieces of clothing behind. My grandparents and mother
responded to the pain they had experienced by holding on to things.
Today, when my mother comes to visit, she still brings bags full of useful items even if we
have plenty of food.A full cupboard,a house stocked with usable objects,is the ultimate
expression of love.
Like many who are privileged (幸运) enough not to have to worry about having basic
things,I tended to admire the opposite —the empty spaces of yoga studios, the delightful
feeling of sorting through a pile of stuff that I could abandon.
Now that my brother and I have come of age,my parents have both expressed a desire to
downsize our possessions.I went through the things that mattered most to me:the books I
loved as a child;the CDs made by friends;the college textbooks I never remembered to
return. They say that we can appreciate the objects we used to love deeply just by saying
goodbye to them. But I didn't want to give any of them up because they filled with memories
of a person I once was,and a person that part of me always will be.
24.The author realized the meaning of family old items when ______ .
A. she was attending a friend's wedding
B. she was preparing for her own wedding
C. her family came to the United States in 1968
D. her mother came to visit, bringing bags full of useful items
25.What does the author want to show us by sharing her grandparents' story? ______
A. In the old days, the elders suffered a lot.
B. The Cuban Revolution brought people much pain.
C. Some old items represent one's precious memories.
D. The young should treasure today's happy life.

C
Long-term exposure to low-frequency noise can cause many health problems, but the
solution may be found in an unexpected object,a ping-pong ball.Conventionally thought of
as the plastic balls that speed through the air during a fast-speed game of table tennis, with a
few changes,ping-pong balls can help absorb the city noise.
Low-frequency noise is everywhere in cities,near roads,and by airports.Though
potentially heard as background in the acoustic (声学的) landscape,it can lead to
earaches, breathing problems and other long-term harmful effects.Because it is produced by
a range of sources and is less affected by structures than higher-frequency sound,low-
frequency noise can be challenging to avoid.
In Journal of Applied Physics, researchers from the University of Lille and the National
Technical University of Athens describe an acoustic metasurface (超表面) that uses ping-
pong balls to prevent sound passing through.
"Ping-pong balls are well-known,everyday objects, present in large numbers all over the
world," said author Robine Sabat. "Our motivation was to use these easily accessible
objects to create a low-frequency soundproof panel structure.Ping-pong balls therefore
present a suitable alternative to sound insulators."
Acoustic metasurfaces are materials specially engineered to handle sound waves. This
metasurface uses ping-pong balls with small holes, acting as Helmholtz resonators (共振
器).More resonant frequencies meant the device was able to absorb more sound. At the
success of two coupled resonators, the researchers added more, until their device looked
like a square sheet of ping-pong balls covered with holes, multiplying the number of
resonant frequencies that could be absorbed.
By adjusting the number of balls, number of holes, and hole sizes, the researchers could
change the metasurface's acoustic properties, proving it is possible to design a sound
absorption panel without expensive materials.
"The potential of this metasurface extends beyond sound absorption," said Sabat. "It can be
broadened to achieve various functions similar to other metasurfaces. These functionalities
include sound focusing, unconventional sound reflection and more."
28.What makes low-frequency noise hard to avoid? ______
A. Its dull background.
B. Its covering range.…

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study
published in the July 5,2023,online issue of Neurology. "Our study found that gum (牙
第10页,共2页龈) disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage (萎缩) in the hippocampus
(海马体),which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer's disease (阿尔兹海默病),"
said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi,Ph.D.of Tohoku University in Sendai,Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems.Their average age was
67.Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They
also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the
study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the
number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes
in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth
was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with
severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for
people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less
tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging.By contrast, for people with severe gum
disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain
aging.
"These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just
maintaining the teeth," Yamaguchi said. "The findings suggest that controlling the
progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe
gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones."
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the
study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan,so the results may not be applied to
other locations.
32.What is Yamaguchi's study mainly about? ______
A. Causes of gum disease.
B. The symptoms of brain shrinkage.
C. Ways to take good care of one's teeth.
D. The connection between the teeth and the brain.
33.How did researchers reach the conclusion? ______
A. By making comparisons.
B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By conducting a survey among dentists.
D. By proving experts' theory in experiments.
34.What do the research findings indicate? ______
A. Gum disease is increasing among people.
B. Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance.
C. Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health.
D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
35.What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi? ______
A. Exploring treatments for gum disease.
B. Seeking new methods to improve brain health.…

.Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in
the mountains that led to a tiny cabin (小木屋) with no electricity and no running
water. She wanted to stay home reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.
"Ready?" Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast.Edun looked out the window and only saw
rain, lots of it. "We should go another day," Edun suggested. "Maybe a hundred years
from now." She worried she would get tired on the hike. She worried about getting bored at
the dark cabin.Mom said it was time to stop worrying and get into the car.
Edun's brother,Will,was waiting in the garage,who wore a camera around his neck.Will
was four years older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He'd started hiking
when he was two and loved it.
Because it was raining,Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat,her rain jacket, and
her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn't like how it felt
against her skin.
After about half an hour's drive, they parked at a trailhead (登山口).The rain had stopped
but the ground was still dripping(滴下) wet. "We'll be there by afternoon!" Mom
promised.The afternoon sounded far away.
Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch—"Fox sparrow!"—then he raced down the
trail and was soon out of sight.
Edun rested under a pine tree. "You can't force me to walk," Edun said. "You're right,"
said her mom smilingly, standing under the tree, too, "But you will never know what
may lie ahead and amaze us."

Paragraph 2:Twenty minutes later, they saw the cabin.Edun and Will started racing up the
hill. Finally, there they were in the small but cozy sabin.Through its window,Edun saw
faraway meadows and lakes, and many more mountains,a whole new world emerging
