Four Fascinating National Parks in the World
Fiordland National Park
Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s Southern Island was established in 1952 and is
part of the larger Te Wahipounamu wilderness,a UNESCO World Heritage Area.Covering 1.2
million hectares,Fiordland National Park is home to green rain forests, crystal clear lakes and
snow-capped mountains.Even on the frequent rainy days, the scenery is spectacular, with entire
valley walls turning into thundering waterfalls.Highlight is the amazing Milford Sound with Mitre
Peak, rising 1,692 metres above sea level and one of the most photographed peaks in the country.

I truly believe we all have a very special purpose in life, regardless of who we are or where
we come from. After ten years of working for a major Wall Street bank,I wanted to do something
challenging. So when I read a Merrill Lynch advertisement looking to hire more stockbrokers(股票
经纪人),with great excitement,I made some phone calls and arranged to meet with one of its
branch vice presidents. After this interview and interviews with twelve of his top stockbrokers,I
eventually landed the job.
The first few months was a struggle.I lived on very little commission(佣金).Night after
night,I left the office weary and exhausted, ready to give up,yet somehow returning the next
morning to start a new day.Eventually, all the hard work paid off.In less than four years,I
became one of the top sales people at my branch and increased personal sales by 1,700 percent. The
success earned me a six-figure income, promotion and numerous sales awards.
Toward the end of my fourth year at Merrill Lynch,it hit me that something was missing.I
thought long and hard about my goals. Then I was reminded of the time when I spoke to hundreds
of people,while in college as a student leader,and years later,when I won a “Humorous
Speech” championship. It dawned on me that every time I had a speaking engagement,I always
came out of the experience with a wonderful, energetic, peaceful and magical feeling that was
unmatched by anything else I did.I knew the extraordinary public-speaking skills I was blessed
with could enable me to make a lasting difference and transform other people’s lives.
Then I took another daring risk, gave up everything and left the investment business for a
more satisfying career as a motivational speaker. The beginning of my speaking journey was
surprisingly similar to what I had first experienced at Merrill Lynch. However, nothing in the
world comes close to the satisfying feeling I get when thousands of people tell me how much I have
made a difference in their lives by motivating them to take risks and be the best they could be.
4.Why did the author meet with a Merrill Lynch branch vice president?

C.Tough and competent. D.Optimistic and agreeable.
6.Why did the author leave Merrill Lynch?
A.He hoped to relive college life. B.He wanted to influence others’ lives.
C.He had an engagement. D.His investment was not satisfying.7.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Speaking Makes a Satisfying Job B.Challenge Your Career Choice
C.Hard Work Pays Off D.Dare to Take Risks

Everyone knows what makes a good story. Our hero starts their journey as a flawed being. In
scene after scene, they face challenges that push them down new paths.By the end of the tale,
they overcome setbacks and become a better person in the process.
We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more
than entertainment.Recent research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can
powerfully help us recover from stress.People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a
new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health.Professor Dan McAdams
put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control
over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health.Another key theme involved is
finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.
McAdams invited 14- and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their
experiences of failure and success.Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the
ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the
better.Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence and better grades in
their schoolwork.
Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that,
hearing about the power of self-narratives,many people may feel they have to find a positive
turning point in life.If they can’t,they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow
“failed”.
Clearly , self-narratives aren’t the panacea.Nevertheless , if you hope for self-
improvement, you can use the findings to good effect.By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the
center of our own struggles,we can all become the author of our own destiny and change
ourselves for the better.
8.What does the research focus on?
A.The causes of stress.
B.The principles of narrative.
C.The connection between struggle and well-being.
D.The link between mental health and self-narratives.
9.Why is the experiment mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To give proof. B.To make predictions.
C.To draw a conclusion. D.To make comparisons.
10.What does the underlined word “panacea” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Attempt to get rid of worries. B.Means of recognizing yourself.C.Solution to adolescent problems. D.Guarantee to become better people.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Embrace Life Struggles B.Be Your Own Hero
C.Ways to Make a Good Story D.The Power of Self-improvement
