选择性必修第一册 Unit 1 Food matters 1.So it makes sense(讲得通,有意义) that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. 2.However,the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than(远没有……) we tend to believe they are. 3.They provided students with(给……提供……) one of the three foods that they had indicated(v.示意) were their top personal comfort foods. 4.After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness,anger and anxiety,the researchers offered(v.提供) the students their comfort food. ①be designed to do...被设计来做……;目的是…… be designed for为……而设计 ②by design故意地;蓄意地 5.They had to assess(v.评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream,pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically(adv.通常,一般) ate to feel better. 6.In another study,comfort food was compared to(compare...with/to...把……和……进行比 较) no food at all,and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything —most likely just due to the passage of time. 7.While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being(暂时),it does little to address(熟词生义:vt.解决) emotional problems. 8.One study showed consumers are likely to throw away(扔掉) an apple with a spot,but would eat a bent cucumber. 9.Our research also shows that selling the ugly produce in this way is likely to increase total demand for fruit and vegetables,while(引导时间状语从句) also decreasing on-farm loss. 10.But there is a way for traditional retailers to add ugly produce into(把……加入……) their product offerings alongside other produce without affecting their profits. 11.By building on(增强) existing consumer awareness of the environmental benefits of ugly food,they could also compete in this growing market. 12.But the restaurants often find special ways to respond in times of(在……的时候) crisis,too. 13.And the Wilmington,North Carolina Chick-fil-A,owned by Donovan and Nikki Carless, was quick to serve locals on Sunday after Hurricane Florence left(熟词生义:vt.让某人或某物处 于某种状态) thousands of people homeless. 14.With this in mind,the restaurant owners asked their employees who would be willing to(乐意做……) serve food on Sunday. 15.In times like these,it’s always inspiring to see businesses put their bottom dollar aside(把……放在一边) and instead look to see how they can give back.
