Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a
while. Reading together with others, known as buddy (同伴) reading, will make this journey even more
fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to
the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.

Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates schools
usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program and has
achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year, program. For
example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided
them with a chance to practice lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or communicating with others. A
student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as
he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often
met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now summer vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend,
choose a book you both like and read it together?

Dreams may make you smart. This was discovered by scientists who do research on dreams.
What is a dream exactly? Scientists explain that during sleep time your brain reviews your experiences
in the day. It tries to connect your new experiences with the old memories (记忆). As your brain connects
things, it turns them into a story, and then you get a dream.
Dreams may help you deal with worries and fears. What has happened during the day may be painful.
While you are sleeping, however, the brain will replay the painful memories in a safe dream space. There the
bad memories become less painful. And you will feel better after waking up.
Dreams also seem to be able to help you learn. This idea is supported by a study. So scientists advise
you not to stay up all night studying, especially when an exam is coming. They say a sweet dream might
help you get higher marks.
Dreams may make you more creative, too. It was reported that a famous songwriter came up with his
best song in a dream, and wrote it down as soon as he woke up. However, dreams alone can’t bring about
creativity. In fact, the songwriter spent a lot of time thinking about the song before the dream. In a word,
hard work matters more for creativity, though dreams also have a role to play.

The idea was started in 2009in Hudson, Wisconsin, when Todd Bol placed a homemade wooden box in
his front yard. The box looked like a one-room schoolhouse. Inside were a dozen or more books free for the
taking. It was put there in memory of Todd's mother, a teacher who loved reading. She had died several
years earlier．
His neighbors and friends loved it, so he built several more and gave them away. Later, more people

On Saturdays, Wang Wei puts on a play with his friends in a small village near their university. The
villagers can hear them, but they cannot see them. That is because they are putting on a shadow puppet
play(皮影戏).
Shadow puppets(皮影木偶)are made of hard leather(皮). The leather is cut out in the shape of a person
or an animal. Each puppet is painted in bright colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have arms and legs
that can move.
During a shadow puppet play, Wang stands behind a white screen with lights behind it. The villagers sit
in front of the screen. Wang and his friends hold the puppets very close to the screen so the villagers can see
the puppets’ shadows clearly. Then they move the puppets around and do the voices of the different
characters.
Shadow puppet plays are an ancient Chinese art. Now with TV and films, shadow puppet plays are not
as popular as before.
Wang and his friends, who are actually members of the school Drama Club, often work very hard for
little money, but they do not mind. They want to keep this traditional art alive.

In 1972, Richard Sears, a young American began learning Chinese because of his interest in traditional
Chinese culture. He went to China to study Chinese in 1990.

and more people in the world are learning Chinese, even Chinese history, traditional Chinese medicine and

Last summer we visited a local farm in our city to pick up freshly-picked sweet corn. At the warehouse,
