Wilbur and Orville Wright are the American inventors who made a small engine-powered flying machine.
They proved that flight without the aid of gas-filled balloons was possible.
Wilbur Wright was born in 1867 near Melville, Indiana. His brother Orville was born four years later in
Dayton, Ohio. As they grew up, the Wright brothers experimented with mechanical things. One day, their father
came home with a toy helicopter (直升机) and gave it to them, who enjoyed playing with it very much. Soon after,
the Wright brothers began to design their own flying machine.
To achieve that goal, the Wright brothers had to address lots of difficulties. In the process, they did many tests
with gliders (滑翔机). By the autumn of 1903, Wilbur and Orville had designed and built an airplane powered by a
gas engine. The plane had wings of 12 meters across. It weighed about 340 kilograms, including the pilot.
On December 17, 1903, they made the world’s first flight in a machine that was heavier than air and powered
by an engine. Orville flew the plane 36 meters. He was in the air for 12 seconds. The two brothers made three more
flights that day. Four other men watched the Wright brothers first flights. One of the men took pictures. Few
newspapers, however, noted the event.
第 4页/共 12页It was almost five years before the Wright brothers became famous. In 1908, Wilbur went to France. He gave a
flight performance at heights of 90 meters. A French company agreed to begin making the Wright brothers’ flying
machine.
Orville made successful flights in the United States at the time when Wilbur was in France. The United States
War Department agreed to buy a Wright brothers’ plane. Wilbur and Orville suddenly became world heroes. The
brothers, however, had no desire for public recognition. They returned to Dayton, where they continued to improve
their airplanes. They taught many others how to fly.
Today, the Wright brothers’ first airplane is in the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Visitors to the
museum can have a look at the Wright brothers’ small plane.
4. What inspired the Wright brothers to invent the plane?
A. A present from their father. B. A chance meet up with flight engineers.
C. The gas-filled balloons they observed. D. The gliders they saw at an air show.
5. How did the public respond to the Wright brothers’ first flight?
A. They valued its practical use. B. They paid little attention to it.
C. They asked for further development of it. D. They thought it was a waste of money.
6. What was the Wright brothers’ attitude towards the praise given to them?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Thankful.
7. What message does the author share through the text?
A. Hard work pays off. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Many hands make light work. D. A good beginning is half done.

Green-roofed buildings date back thousands of years, even before the concept (概念) of housing known today
was born. The earliest green roofs came in the form of sod (草皮) roofs above caves (洞穴). Plants were used on
top of the caves for ceremonial and agricultural purposes. But sod roofs gradually fell out of favor as their
usefulness wore down with the terrible weather and wildlife visits.
Modern green roofing technology was exploited around the 1960s. It all started with Germany pioneering
advanced solutions to roof leaking (渗漏). The new technology was heavily marketed, and most people in Germany
started adopting green roofs. Since then, many technologies have come up to advance green roofs. Today, green
roofs are growing in popularity across the world.
On the design aspect, a green roof is one of the main ways to bring nature into your home. It brings the beauty
第 5页/共 12页of the wild right into your home. They offer beautiful views from above and below. Environmentally, a green roof
is one of the best ways to bring a microclimate into your home. Even if you live in a hot area, a green roof will
bring a cooling effect to your surroundings. The other vital factor is the role that the roof plays in providing habitat
for wildlife. Wild insects and birds may find your roof to be a good living place just because you have fixed a green
roof.
It seems that the green roof is a win-win for you and the environment. However, this does not mean it is good
for you. Its environmental benefits are only applicable in situations where you intend to keep it for long. If you
intend to replace yours in a few years, stick to a normal roof. Green roofs use so many materials underneath that
they could be harmful to the environment.
8. Why did sod roofs become unpopular?
A Caves lost their attraction. B. They were too expensive to maintain.
C. Natural elements would do damage to them. D. Their productivity failed to meet requirements.
9. What does the underlined word “exploited” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Developed. B. Recovered. C. Simplified. D. Changed.
10. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The development of green roofs. B. The materials used in green roofs
C. The advantages of green roofs. D. The ways to maintain green roofs.
11. What can be inferred about green roofs from the text?
A. They are eco-friendly under certain conditions. B. Biodiversity is harmed in an unexpected way.
C. More recyclable materials should be invented. D. They should be replaced regularly.
D
Fish well-being is a primary topic in fish farming. Therefore, it is important to see the fish as individuals,
rather than just a group. Researchers have used camera technology combined with AI to measure and analyze (分析)
the breathing rate of individual fish, which provides them with valuable information about their well-being.
In the research project, the researchers have developed a way of analyzing signs of stress and other factors.
Using Al, they can recognize the fish and analyze their breathing movements at the same time. The camera
technology is able to observe the breath of a fish because it can see its mouth from the side. So the newly developed
technology gives the researchers a “digital eye”, which makes it possible to follow numerous fish at the same time.
The researchers have carried out experiments, where they tracked nine fish tubs (缸), each containing seven
第 6页/共 12页fish. The breathing rates of all the fish were then analyzed under three different temperature patterns (模式), as well
as with different oxygen levels in the water. They could see exactly how the breathing of the fish changed in
stressful situations or in the event of changes in oxygen levels or water temperature. They found that lower oxygen
levels caused the fish to breathe more rapidly and saw the same response when they increased the water
temperature. Stress also led to an increase in breathing rate.
The study has contributed to a new understanding of the breathing rates that can be regarded as normal and
those that can be considered to show that something may be wrong. However, the researchers also found that the
breathing rates of the individual fish vary and some of them breathe more slowly or faster than others. The new
technology, which records each fish individually, enables them to see whether the breathing rate of some fish
changes, while that of others does not.
12. What is the significance of the newly developed technology?
A. It helps farmers feed fish more properly.
B. It enables researchers to focus on individual fish.
C. It allows researchers to control water temperature more easily.
D It makes it possible for farmers to locate specific fish.
13. What did the researchers find in the experiments?
A. Fish could adapt quickly to the stressful environment.
B. Fish in different tubs had the same breathing patterns.
C. Changes in oxygen levels had no effect on fish breathing.
D. Higher water temperature made fish breathe more rapidly.
14. What does the discovery about breathing rate variations imply?
A. AI technology can’t account for biodiversity.
B. Group-based studies remain more efficient.
C. One standard for fish well-being doesn’t work for all.
D. Water quality factors matter more to fish than individual differences.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Fish Farming
B. Advanced Methods Promote Fish Well-Being
C. New Technology Uncovers Details about Fish Well-Being

The February cold enveloped the mountains where I lived its icy fingers slipping through every opening of
my worn winter coat. For ten years, this reliable partner had protected me from the worst of winter’s bite, but now
its zipper (拉链) finally gave out. I’d attempted with replacement parts, but the fix was not suitable, leaving me
shaking with cold each time I stepped outside. Unwillingly, I admitted defeat-it was time for a new coat.
As I turned into the shopping center parking lot, my focus on finding the perfect replacement was changed by
an unexpected sight. There, near the store’s entrance, sat a homeless man with his dog curled (蜷缩) at his feet. His
cardboard sign- “Anything helps, God bless” -shook slightly in the wind as car after car rushed past without
slowing. Something about his quiet patience struck me. Almost without thinking, I pulled over and pressed a folded
bill into his gloved hand before continuing into the store.
The store’s warmth relaxed me as I went around trying to make the best choice. Yet with each coat I
considered, my thoughts kept circling back to the man outside-What must it be like to face such cold in the freezing
winter? By the time I waited in line in front of the checkout counter to pay for the piece of clothing I had chosen, a
sense of guilt (内疚) had settled heavily in my chest. There I stood, holding a bag containing a $200 coat while
outside, a man would sleep in temperatures well below freezing.
The next minute, I found myself driving back to where the man still sat, the afternoon light fading around us.
Up close, I could see he was younger than I’d first thought-maybe in his early thirties-with intelligent eyes that
were filled with both tiredness and an unexpected shine. His dog, a mixed breed with a dirty coat, waved its tail
happily.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I got out of the car with my old coat in one hand.
