Fun facts about oxen!
Here comes 2021——it’s the Year of the Ox. Chinese people believe this year will be great, because the ox has
many positive meanings in Chinese culture.
The ox stands for the spirit of hard work and helpfulness. They are our friends. Cows give people milk. Yaks
help people carry things around.
People like this animal so much that they write poems about it and paint pictures of it, they also make paper
cuttings of it to beautify their homes during important holidays.
Lu Xun, one of China’s most famous writers, wrote “Cows eat grass, but give milk.” In Chinese, we use the
word “lao huang niu” to describe those who help others and ask nothing for themselves.
But in the West, some people have a different opinion about the animal. “Bullheaded” people are very
stubborn and will not listen to advice. If we say someone behaves like “a bull in a china shop”, it means he or she
acts impolitely.
Cow, in Indian culture, is known as a Holy animal. Most Indians don’t kill or eat cows. Cows often walk
around freely, even along busy streets in big cities in India. Why are cows so important to Indians? Because cows
produce milk and Indians see milk as amazing food. They will serve the milk to the God.

You might not usually pick up someone else’s rubbish. But imagine if everyone does it, the world will be a
much cleaner place!
When I was young, my parents and my teachers always told me to pick up any rubbish around me. Each day at
school during our lunch break, every student had to find some rubbish. We put it in the bin before we returned to
class. Our school was always very clean because everyone spent one or two minutes picking up rubbish every day.
That same idea is now becoming popular around the world, thanks to Take 3. Australian surfer (冲浪运动员)
Amanda Marechal and ocean scientist Roberta Dixon-Valk came up with the idea in 2009. They asked everyone to
pick up three pieces of rubbish each time they visited the beach. Why did they ask people to pick up just three
pieces of rubbish, instead of 10 or 20? They think it’s an easy thing that people might actually do.
Today, Take 3 is a popular idea around the world, and not just on the beach. Take 3 has gone to the United
Kingdom, the United States, Costa Rica and some other countries. Their latest plan is to make an app. It will help
people learn more about what kinds of plastic are polluting the ocean.
Do you want to make the world a cleaner place? Why not start a Take 3 group with your friends this weekend?

4.What does the story mainly talk about?

A teenager’s(青少年的)dream of cleaning up the world’s oceans may soon come true.
Seven years ago, when Mike was a teenager, he was swimming in the ocean. He saw more rubbish in the water
than fish. So for a school project, he made a plan to clean up the ocean.

plan into action. Two years later, Mike’s plan began.
In the ocean, there is a lot of floating rubbish. Mike’s group will clean it up by using a floating plastic tube
(漂浮塑料管). The tube will go around the rubbish and trap(收集), waves and ocean currents will push the
rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the coast to sort(分类)and recycle it.
There are 1.8 trillion pieces of rubbish in the area. Most of it is plastic, like bottles, bags and packaging.
Plastic rubbish is very bad for birds and fish. They eat the rubbish and may become sick. The Ocean Cleanup says it

Huang Dafa was born in 1935 in Caoyuanba, Guizhou. Life before 1995 was very hard for Caoyuanba
villagers. Because of water shortage. they could only plant corn and potatoes to live on. and rice was a valuable
food during the Spring Festival. At that time, there was no electricity and not any roads in the village, earning it the
name of the “poorest part” of Guizhou.
“I decided to do three things for the villagers: bring water to the village, build a road and connect the village to
electricity.” Huang said when thinking of his early days.

not go well at the beginning, because he has little knowledge. After more than 10 years, water was still a dream for
the people of Caoyuanba.
However, Huang never lost hope. He spent several years studying and led the villagers to try again in 1992.
The villagers finished the water project three years later and named it Dafa Canal. With enough water, people
started to grow rice. Huang then helped the villagers increase the rice-growing land to 31. 968 m2.
At the same time, the village was connected to electricity and Huang also led the villagers to build a new road.
“I felt so proud to be able to do these for the villagers. We shouldn’t wait for things to happen.” said Huang,
