Dear Kids Helper Magazine,
My name is Evan. I don't think being the eldest child in the family is a
wonderful thing. First of all, I have to share all my toys (玩具) and games with
my younger sister and brother, Julia and William. Of course, they don't need to
share theirs with me because I'm not interested in their things. What's more,
Julia and William are always following me here and there. It's especially (尤其)
a headache when my friend visits me. We look for a quiet place in the house
where they can't disturb(打搅) us, but in minutes they will find us and ask to
join in. I can't seem to get any peace at home.
At mealtime, I have to eat whatever is on my plate. But Julia and William
only need to try one bite (一口) when it's not their favorite food. Not only this,
but I need to be an example to them.
It doesn't seem fair that I have more chores to do around the house than
Julia and William. Also, when it comes to homework, I have so much to do
compared with(与……相比) them! Every day I spend at least one and a half
hours doing it, but it takes them just ten minutes! Oh, the worst part of it is that I
have to practice the piano after dinner, but they needn't.
I'm feeling really upset about the situation. What can I do? I'm looking
forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours truly,
Evan Smith

54. Why did Evan write the letter?

When I was a kid, I often played basketball. So I was thin but healthy.
When I was about 15, I stopped playing basketball. I also started to drink a lot
of drinks high in sugar and eat much more than before. Between 15 and 17, I
put on a lot of weight (重量)—about 50 kg.
I didn't know how big I was until I saw a photo one day. In the photo, I
had a fat neck and my stomach was out there. I knew I needed to lose some
weight.
I started to drink only water, and eat less and healthier. I ate mainly
vegetables and only one piece of meat every day, and stayed away from sugar.
I also started to exercise. Every day, I ran for 30 minutes first, and then I
did some pushups (俯卧撑)for 10 minutes. I also jumped rope for 15 minutes
every day.
I kept exercising the whole winter. When March came, many people said
to me, “Oh, Dave, you've been a different person!”
It was true. I had lost 25kg in the three months. I liked taking photos, and
I noticed the difference in my looks.
I loved the three months. It felt good to lose weight, and it felt even better
to set a goal (目标) and go for it.
55. Dave put on a lot of weight partly because he ________.
A. took some medicine
B. got too much pressure
C. didn't have enough sleep

A. Running.
B. Basketball.
C. Pushups.
D. Rope jumping.
58. What can we learn from Dave's story?
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Success comes from hard work.
C. It's never too late to lose weight.
D. Sports help a person stay young.

Dear Anna,
How are you? My name is Cindy. I've been looking forward to having a
penfriend for a long time. I hope we can become good friends.
I got your name and email from my English teacher, Ms. Sands. These days
I'm thinking about what to write. At first, I wanted to tell you what it's like to go
to school here in Minnesota, but later I thought you could look up Minnesota on
the Internet and read about it yourself. Then I had the idea to tell you something
about my family, but I realized (意识到) that the story of my family might be
kind of boring. After that, I thought about asking you questions about what it's
like to live in Belgium, but I'm afraid you might think my questions are silly (愚
蠢的).
I think I can tell you a little about myself. In fact, you probably have
learned one thing about me. I sometimes have a hard time making up my mind!
I hope you can write to me anyway.
Yours,
Cindy

A. Because Cindy visited Belgium years ago.

62. From the letter, we can know that Cindy ________.
A. lost a tooth last week
B. has a lot of good friends

This past Saturday I went to the park with my family to spend a relaxing
time. My sixyearold son met a boy. They didn't know each other. My son had a
soccer ball and they played it together. They had a good time playing soccer.
After they finished playing, we sat under a big tree and started to have
lunch. But the boy didn't leave. Maybe he came to the park alone and didn't take
lunch. My son wanted to invite him to have lunch with us. I agreed and the boy
did. My son gave him lots of nice food and the boy had it all. My son even
shared his favorite cakes with the boy. They both looked very happy.
After lunch, the boy went away without saying “thank you”. I was a little
disappointed(失望的), but I knew my son didn't need to hear it. He did the right
thing and was a good boy.
Sometimes we help others and don't need them to say “thank you” as
return. But saying “thank you” may make us happier and feel good about what
we did, and then we will do more.

How to deal with the stress in our life
Nowadays, more and more students are under great stress. It is
important for us to deal with it properly.
First, when we have the stress about life or studies, we can talk to our
parents. They are very glad to help us. Second, we should have a good rest
at night and shouldn't stay up late. Third, we can take up a hobby, such as
playing the piano, playing badminton or reading books. These can help us
relax and forget the stress. Fourth, we can go out with our friends and enjoy
ourselves.
