Marriage after Economic Independence: A Choice, Not an
经济独立之后:婚姻应是选择,而非
In recent years, it has become increasingly common for people, especially young adults with stable income and independent lives, to choose not to enter marriage. Some view this as a sign of selfishness or a threat to traditional family values. Others see it as a natural result of social progress. In my view, choosing not to marry after becoming economically independent should be respected, because marriage is meaningful only when it is based on free will, emotional maturity, and shared responsibility.
Admittedly, marriage remains important for many people and for society. A healthy marriage can provide emotional companionship, mutual support, and a stable environment for raising children. It also connects individuals with families and communities. For those who truly desire it and are ready for it, marriage can be one of the most valuable commitments in life. Therefore, the rise of non-marriage should not be simply interpreted as a rejection of love, family, or responsibility.
However, economic independence has changed the foundation of marriage. In the past, some people entered marriage partly because they needed financial security, social recognition, or a sense of security within a conventional life path. Today, when people can support themselves, marriage is no longer the only way to survive or to gain respect. This change gives individuals more room to ask a deeper question: Do I really want marriage, or am I only following what others expect of me? From this perspective, choosing not to marry may reflect self-awareness rather than irresponsibility.
More importantly, marriage should never be treated as a task to finish. If two people marry only because they have reached a certain age, because their parents are anxious, or because society considers marriage normal, the relationship may become a burden instead of a source of happiness. Not only should marriage involve affection, but it should also require patience, communication, economic planning, and a willingness to share daily responsibilities. Without these foundations, marriage may harm both partners and even future children.
Of course, respecting the choice not to marry does not mean encouraging everyone to avoid marriage. A mature society should allow different life choices to coexist. Some people will find fulfillment in marriage and parenthood; others may devote themselves to career, friendship, public service, personal growth, or caring for their parents. What matters is not whether a person follows the same life schedule as others, but whether he or she lives sincerely, responsibly, and with respect for others.
In conclusion, the fact that more economically independent people choose not to marry should not be seen as a social crisis. Instead, it reminds us that marriage needs to return to its true meaning. Economic independence gives people the freedom to choose, but freedom also requires responsibility. Only when marriage is entered by choice rather than pressure can it become a genuine partnership, and only when non-marriage is treated with respect can society become more tolerant and humane.
